Peterborough vs Wigan

The first game I'm going to preview in this thread this weekend is the 3pm GMT clash in League One between table toppers Peterborough and relegation strugglers Wigan at the Weston Homes Stadium. Everything here is pointing to a solid home win but is there any chance the away side could defy the form books and spring a shock victory upon their hosts?

Peterborough are a team flying right now. Darren Ferguson's men are top of the table and clear of 2nd place Lincoln by 1 point and 5 points ahead of 3rd placed Hull with 2 games in hand on the Humberside club. The Posh have won 5 league games in a row to help propel them up the table from play-off contenders to automatic promotion favourites. Home form has been key in their success this season. The team have only lost 1 of their 14 home league games this season and have scored 32 goals during that period.

Wigan come into this game knowing time is running out to get themselves out of the mess they're in. Financial issues have dogged the club for years and they now face another relegation down to League Two unless their results pick up soon. The Latics are in 22nd place and just 1 point from safety but most of the teams above them have 1-2 games in hand. Leam Richardson is the caretake manager back in charge after the John Sheridan experiment died a quick death. The 2-1 win away to Bristol Rovers showed there is still some fight left in this side but their recent record in the league still stands at 6 losses from their last 8 league games. However, it is 2 wins from their last 3 away league matches.

I appreciate this game won't be as cut and dry as the league table suggests. Peterborough are in-form at home and have been dominant on their own patch all season. Wigan are a stubborn proposition on the road though. I'm not saying I think Wigan will win this but I certainly don't think it'll be as one-sided as some think. Peterborough will need to work hard to grind out the victory here.

Forest Green Rovers vs Colchester

The second preview in this thread turns the attention to League Two where promotion-chasing Forest Green Rovers will be looking to boost their title chances against a Colchester side who are just about keeping their heads above water in a 5:30pm GMT kick-off at The New Lawn. This is a result that's already been decided, right? Hmm, let's take a look.

Forest Green Rovers are in 2nd place heading into this game and only 1 point behind league leaders Cambridge United with two games in hand. It shows the sterling work that Mark Cooper has done with the team since he came in. The former Swindon manager has been with the club for 5 years now and they're continuing to grow under his stewardship. The Green might have lost 3-1 at home to a resurgent Southend during the week but before that game it was 5 games unbeaten including 4 wins in that spell. Home form has been a sticky point for Rovers this season with them having the 10th best home record in the division having won just 6 of their 14 home league games. However, they have lost just 2 of their last 8 home league matches.

Colchester are now solely focused on maintaining their Football League status this season. The club are down in 21st place and even though they're 7 points clear of relegation they have played a game more than the two sides that currently occupy the relegation spots in Barrow and Grimsby. Former manager Steve Ball left his role earlier this week and he was replaced by interim head coach Wayne Brown. This will be Brown's first game in charge of the club and he takes over a side that hasn't won in 13 league games. The U's also possess the unwanted worst away record in the division with just 1 win from their 15 league games on the road. To give you some context of their losing mentality, they haven't tasted victory on a football pitch since 8th December, 2020.

I feel this game is more about how bad Colchester have been playing lately rather than how good Forest Green Rovers have been performing. The home side have been inconsistent at home but are starting to win more than they're losing. The away team are just dreadful. How much can Brown change from the Ball era in an effort to turn it around? It's not the best fixture for him to start his reign and even if Colchester improve on recent form it still probably won't be enough to take something from this game.
