First day of the New Year and the Tote Scoop6 has been held over to coincide with the new ITV racing programme and the big meeting at Cheltenham.

Leg 1: A Good Skin

A big field handicap from Cheltenham to get the ball rolling this week and i've narrowed this down to a couple of likely improvers. Firstly Sizing Cadelco ran well at Ascot last time and could well improve for the step up in trip here. A Good Skin gets the marginal vote, he's a consistent type, the yard are going well and he wears cheek-peices for the first time which might just do the trick.

Leg 2: Pain Au Chocolat

Our first trip to Scotland and a 9-runner handicap chase from Musselburgh. Top weight Germany Calling was really impressive last time out but faces a stiff task here. Dan Skelton sends Pain Au Chocolat up north for the decent ground and the tip might be worth following. Only a 6yo and has been taking on better company than this of late.

Leg 3: Village Vic

The big betting handicap of the day and i'm quite confident of a solid run from Village Vic. He has been running well without winning this season but has finished behind the likes of Frodon and Taquin De Seuil who are both very useful sorts. Top Gamble and Tenor Nivernais are others to consider in a cracking renewal.

Leg 4: Call To Order

Next up is a 3m handicap hurdle and one of my old favourites Fingal Bay lines up. He's not the force of old but could still grab a place in this company. Cogry goes back over hurdles after recent disasters but my tentative vote goes to Call To Order who was very impressive last time and is clearly on the upgrade. 

Leg 5: Kapstadt 

Back to Musselburgh for the next leg and another Southern raider might be worth following. Ian Williams has been in cracking form lately and sends Kapstadt up from his base in Worcestershire. He won well last time and can defy a penalty at the main expense of the top weight Superb Story.

Leg 6: Lil Rockerfeller

The Relkeel Hurdle is the last leg and a decent renewal which includes last years winner Camping Ground. He won in heavy ground 12 months ago and will find things a bit different here. I like Lil Rockerfeller from the Neil King yard, he has chased home Yanworth and Uknowhatimeanharry the last twice and wont find anything as good as that up against him here.

Big race of the day village Vic and vaniteux are game sorts and very classy but may struggle to give weight to the top two here who are improving types especially the top rated Nicholls horse who won in a canter last time and could be on the upgrade ...quite by chance has close collateral form with village Vic and it could come down tonluck on the day .between those two  ..,classy race
