Glorious Goodwood – Friday July 31st Friday’s Goodwood card features no less than four Group races and the main highlight is the King George Stakes at 3.45, which is a very competitive sprint over 5f. We also have the bookies favourite race of the day, the Betfred Mile, worth £93,000 to the winner. 2.00: Betfred Glorious Stakes (Group 3) (1m4f) The Corsican has to be respected here after being withdrawn from the King George last weekend due to the soft ground. It has dried up well at Goodwood and he should take his chance in this much weaker contest. Hillside is the danger on the figures but he’s not been at his best so far this season and maybe Connecticut will be the one to trouble the favourite. The Cumani horse won a Listed race last time but is clearly on the upgrade. Selection: The Corsican 7/4 Coral 2.35: Bonhams Thoroughbred Stakes (Group 3) (1m) William Buick rode Wannabe Yours to victory last season and has a real chance to follow up on the Charlie Appleby 3yo Latharnach. He was a much improved runner up in the St James’s Palace Stakes behind Gleneagles last time out and now has to prove that was no fluke. The Hannon yard have a good record in this race and Kool Kompany has to come into calculations now eased in grade. He will find this easier than the Guineas or the Commonwealth Cup. Aktabantay and Convey are others to consider in an open race. Selection: Kool Kompany EW 14/1 BetVictor 3.10: Betfred Mile (Class 2 handicap) (1m) Red Avenger won this last year off 3lbs lower, he comes here in decent nick having dead-heated at Newcastle and should go well. Top weight GM Hopkins won the Hunt Cup by a neck, which ended a frustrating run of defeats; he now has to back that up from stall 18, which doesn’t help. Basem has won two tough handicaps but has now gone up 10lbs in the process and I much prefer the chances of So Beloved, the David O’Meara 5yo has been in good form and we can forget his last run at York when he was hampered. A return to a mile could see him improve further and is drawn well in box seven. Selection: So Beloved EW 18/1 Bet365 3.45: Qatar King George Stakes (Group 2) (5f) A decent renewal of the King George Stakes and plenty of horses come here in form. The O’Meara pair Move In Time and Out Do both won last time and I’m not sure why Danny Tudhope is on the latter. Move In Time is proven at this grade but Jim Crowley has been given the leg-up on that one. Cotai Glory ran a cracker on his comeback at York lately and should be spot on now while the top one Muthmir is a class act and a reproduction of his third at Ascot would see him go very close here. Of the others Moviesta and last years winner Take Cover will be in the shake up in a race that will be fast and furious from the off. Selection: Muthmir 5/1 Paddy Power 4.20: Betfred Supports Jack Berry House Nursery Stakes (Class 2 handicap) (6f) This seasons juveniles have been all about the Mark Johnston yard so its not surprising that he saddles three runners here. It took Highly Sprung five starts to get off the mark but he obliged last time out at Catterick. Fashionable Spirit won at Ripon and was a fair second at York last time while the third runner Furiant has been well beaten in his last two starts and now tries handicaps. Richard Hannon runs Belvoir Bay who was a good 6th in the Super Sprint while the Brian Meehan youngster Alshalaal showed improved form last time and could be well handicapped. Selection: Alshalaal EW 9/1 Stan James 4.55: L’Ormarins Queen Plate Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) (7f) Sandringham winner Osaila will be a popular choice here with Frankie Dettori on top. She was only 7th in the Guineas but won the Nell Gwyn over this trip back in April. She certainly sets the standard and is a worthy favourite. Kiyoshi looks best of the older horses in the race for Qatar Racing. She was a winner here as a 2yo and last time out showed her well being with a good third to New Providence at York. That horse re-opposes and has to enter calculations while Fadhayyil has done little wrong with a 5th in the Guineas and a second in the Jersey Stakes at Ascot and looks sure to run well. Selection: Kiyoshi 9/2 Stan James 5.30: Betfred Mobile Stakes (Class 3 handicap) (1m3f) A 3yo handicap to end the day and a race full of unexposed types and seven last time out winners in the line up. Top weight Tashaar is one of three Richard Hannon runners and is ridden by Frankie Dettori. He won by over 4 lengths on his debut at Haydock and could be useful. Another once raced winner is Rhythmical from the Mark Johnston yard, she won at Leicester in an ordinary event and is difficult to weigh up. Taraz comes here looking for a hat-trick after an 8 length victory at Epsom last time; he’s gone up a whopping 12 lbs for that so has a stiff task while Sir Michael Stoute saddles Peterhof who comes back after a break and is probably better than we have seen so far. Selection: Tashaar 9/2 Ladbrokes Some prices to follow
