The next major tournament of the snooker season has arrived with the Shanghai Masters starting on Monday. The entire event is broadcast live on Eurosport in the UK albeit not at the easiest watching times. A decent field has made it to China so this should be a good tournament. Draw, schedule and format here: http://www.snooker.org/res/index.asp?event=345

Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept Tournament preview: 1pt ew R.Walden to win Shanghai Masters 33/1 Betfred (1/2 1-2) Ricky Walden almost won the six red tournament last week, losing to Stephen Maguire in the final but that boost to his confidence will have done him no harm. He knows how to win this tournament having won it back in 2008. Walden has shown over the last 12-18 months that he can come through and reach the latter stages of the tournament and if there is an easier section of the draw this week he has found it. He has plenty of matches under his belt coming in here and looks overpriced to me at 33/1. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept Monday TV/Streamed previews: 3pts R.Day (-3.5 frames) to beat X.Si 11/8 Paddy Power I expect Ryan Day to come through this without too many problems. He has been playing a few matches recently so he won’t be rusty like some professionals can be going into these major tournaments and when they are rusty or not acclimatised that is generally when we see the upsets. Day is up and running so I don’t expect him to come unstuck here and given how heavy he scores I would be surprised if he drops more than a frame. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/day-vs-si-betting-ryan-day-can-ease-through-wildcard-match 4pts J.Swail (+2.5 frames) to beat S.Murphy 4/5 Coral I was surprised to see Swail’s record against Murphy so one sided in his favour. He has won the last three matches and while I’m not convinced he will win this one he has shown enough recently to suggest that he will push Murphy close. Murphy isn’t always the most convincing winner in the early rounds of tournaments and he’s up against a seasoned campaigner who is very good under pressure here. I think Swail can reach three frames if not the five he craves. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/murphy-vs-swail-betting-joe-swail-can-push-murphy-close-in-shanghai 4pts L.Wenbo vs X.Bingtao - Over 7.5 frames 10/11 Winner Sports Wenbo looks a little short to me in this match. I don’t think he’s anything like a certainty even though you would give him the edge purely on experience. Bingtao has shown he can play in the limited opportunities he has been given this season so I think the match will be a lot closer than the odds suggest. With that in mind just under evens on over 7.5 frames looks a safe bet to me. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/wenbo-vs-bingtao-betting-liang-wenbo-may-need-to-do-the-distance-to-progress 3pts A.McManus (+2.5 frames) to beat R.O'Sullivan 8/5 Spreadex I think McManus can keep this closer than perhaps people will expect. It will be only natural for O’Sullivan to be a bit rusty and he hasn’t played competitively out in China for a while so the conditions might take some getting used to for him as well which could be important. McManus is going along nicely and he has the all round game to take three frames off the Rocket if not a couple more. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept Tuesday TV/Streamed previews: 4pts B.Hawkins vs M.Williams - Over 7.5 frames 4/5 Paddy Power If Hawkins wasn’t playing his first match this week then I would fancy him to come through but Williams has a good record against him and he is well known to play well overseas. The fact he has had an extra match on the tables this week has to be of an advantage to the Welshman. Hawkins is one of the better players in the game right now though so I don’t see him beaten without a fight which makes me think this one will have more than 7.5 frames. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/hawkins-vs-williams-betting-first-round-clash-could-be-a-close-encounter 4pts J.Higgins (-1.5 frames) to beat R.Day 11/10 Coral Higgins will be confident given his record against Ryan Day and he played enough matches last week to have his cue arm well oiled going into this match and I think he can come through with a bit in hand here. Day is a capable player but when he comes up against the top safety players he sometimes struggles and I think that could be the case here too. At odds against I’ll take Higgins on the handicap. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/higgins-vs-day-betting-john-higgins-can-come-past-day-with-a-bit-in-hand 4pts J.Lisowski (+2.5 frames) to beat D.Junhui 10/11 Spreadex Given Ding’s lack of competitive action I find it hard to believe that he will run away with this unless Lisowski has a complete mare which he doesn’t have many of at the minute. When the Englishman is losing matches they are all pretty close but more experienced opponents are getting over the line. That could well be the case here too but I certainly think that Lisowski can make it to three frames if not the full five. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/ding-vs-lisowski-betting-lisowski-can-run-rusty-ding-close 3pts J.Trump (-2.5 frames) to beat D.Dale 6/5 Paddy Power Judd Trump leads the head to head between these two 5-0 and while Dale has had a couple of chances to beat Trump the fact he hasn’t got the job done says everything. Trump is in brilliant form at the minute and if Dale isn’t spot on with his game then this is likely to be a sixth win in six for the Englishman. I like the way Judd’s playing at the minute and take him to come through this comfortably. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept Wednesday TV/stream previews: 4pts M.White (+2.5 frames) to beat N.Robertson 4/5 Coral Michael White had a bit of a season to forget last year but the signs have been a little better for him this season. White has played a lot of matches recently which should stand him in good stead here and with Robertson having not taken in Thailand last week he could be at a disadvantage. I still think the Australian will have too much for the Welshman here but not before White makes it to three frames. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/robertson-vs-m-white-betting-michael-white-can-compete-strongly-in-shanghai 3pts Y.Bingtao to beat G.Dott 9/4 Bet365 At the prices you would have to suggest Yan Bingtao is good value in this match. Graeme Dott is a tough opponent but he isn’t likely to blow you away with a burst of scoring and that should keep Bingtao in the match. The youngster may not keep up with Dott in the tactical battle but when the balls are open you would think he will have every chance of competing. He looks a big price here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/dott-vs-bingtao-betting-chinese-youngster-good-enough-to-surprise-dott 3pts M.Fu (-2.5 frames) to beat Z.Xintong 5/4 Bet365 These two met in the International Championship last season and Fu ran out a pretty comfortable winner and I expect him to do so again in this match. Zhao has talent but he struggles against the players who can keep him tied up and Fu is most definitely one such player. Fu hasn’t really broken through this season yet but he remains a dangerous player in any tournament and he should come safely through here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/fu-vs-xintong-betting-marco-fu-can-cruise-into-the-second-round-in-china 4pts K.Doherty (+2.5 frames) to beat M.Selby 17/20 Coral Generally matches between these two are quite tight and there’s no reason why this one won’t be either so I like the look of Doherty with the 2.5 frame head start. Selby rarely blows opponents away and Doherty has the nous and the ability to hang around and make life difficult for the world champion here. With the benefit of a match on the tables this week already Doherty should stay close in this one. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept Thursday TV/streamed previews: 4pts G.Dott vs S.Murphy - Over 7.5 frames 10/11 Spreadex The last four matches between these two have been close. Three of them have gone to a deciding frame and the other one was 13-11 so all the signs are that we’re in for a lengthy match in this encounter. Both men looked in good touch in their first round matches so I see no reason why they won’t perform well again here and so the obvious bet appears to be over 7.5 frames. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/dott-vs-murphy-betting-two-former-world-champions-can-play-another-tight-match 4pts M.Allen (-1.5 frames) to beat M.Holt 11/10 Paddy Power Mark Allen is ticking along nicely at the minute and he has already beaten Williams 4-1 in a PTC tournament this year and I think he’ll come through this one just as comfortably too. He’s scoring well but is tactically sound enough to compete in that area. Williams hasn’t scored well for a little while and that can be his undoing here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/allen-vs-williams-betting-mark-allen-can-be-too-good-for-mark-williams-in-china 4pts M.Gould (+2.5 frames) to beat D.Junhui 8/11 Coral Ding will need to improve on his first round performance to avoid this being a nervy night for him. Gould has nothing to lose and probably had one eye on the plane home when he was 4-1 down in the last round so he can free up and give this his best shot. Ding’s positional play wasn’t how we’d expect in the first round and he looked a little rusty so I expect Gould to reach three frames here if not five. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/ding-vs-gould-betting-martin-gould-can-run-ding-close-in-shanghai 4pts M.Selby (-1.5 frames) to beat M.Holt 3/4 Coral I like the world champion in this match. Michael Holt isn’t to be disrespected because he’s had some good results in the last year or so but Selby looked good against Doherty and that spells danger for the rest of the field this week. I don’t see Holt beating Selby in the safety game and I’m not convinced he’ll get the chances he needs to win this match. Holt will battle but I think Selby can come through with a bit in hand here. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept QF previews: 4pts M.Selby (-2.5 frames) to beat F.O'Brien Evs Ladbrokes This might not be the prettiest of watches but I don’t think we’ll have to watch it for long because I expect Selby to come through without too many problems here. O’Brien is likely to make it scrappy but that doesn’t bother Selby too much and when the chances do present themselves I would expect the world champion to be the one to capitalise on them the strongest so I’ll take Selby with the cap here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/o-brien-vs-selby-betting-mark-selby-should-cruise-into-semi-finals 4pts M.White vs M.Allen - Over 7.5 frames 4/5 Winner Sports I think this has the potential of being a very tight match. Michael White looks to be in great form whereas Mark Allen is not only in good form but he’s a real fighter too and never gives in without a good scrap. White is scoring phenomenally well at the minute but he’ll have to work a little harder for his chances in this one. Everything points to it being a tight match so over 7.5 frames looks good to me. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/white-vs-allen-betting-quarter-final-clash-could-be-a-lengthy-one 3pts A.McManus to beat S.Bingham 6/4 William Hill I wondered if McManus would have a bit of a hangover after beating O’Sullivan in the first round but he clearly didn’t because his win over Stephen Maguire in the second round was even more emphatic. Stuart Bingham has been playing well himself so this should be a good match to watch but with the form and confidence McManus has behind him I think he is good value to see off a third major scalp in as many matches. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/bingham-vs-mcmanus-betting-alan-mcmanus-dream-run-can-continue 4pts D.Junhui vs G.Dott - Over 7.5 frames 4/5 Winner Sports I think this will be a close match between two very good players on their day. If both were on top form you’d expect Ding to win but he’s slightly off the top of his game at the minute and Dott looks in good nick so that should ensure a close match. Ding has plenty of reasons to give his all while Dott will be eyeing up a big pay day so I expect to see more than 7.5 frames before this one is decided. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept SF previews: 4pts M.Allen vs M.Selby - Over 9.5 frames Evs Bet365 These two have met twice over the 11 frame distance in the last few years and they’ve both ended 6-5 with each man winning one match each so that suggests there isn’t a whole lot between them. Their final in Latvia a few weeks ago also went to a deciding frame so I really expect a tight match here especially given what is at stake. With that in mind I’ll take over 9.5 frames here. Full preview here: http://www.punterslounge.com/allen-vs-selby-betting-opening-semi-final-could-go-all-the-way 3pts S.Bingham to beat D.Junhui 7/4 Coral Ding has done well to make it this far without playing well at all to date but he’ll have to improve in this semi final if he is to extend his title defence. Stuart Bingham looks in good touch and he has a very good record over Ding in their recent past so he’ll be full of confidence going into this match. I’ve kept expecting Ding to improve this week but it hasn’t happened yet so I’ll take Bingham here. Re: Shanghai Masters - 8-14 Sept Final preview: 4pts M.Allen to beat S.Bingham 8/11 Ladbrokes I think this final could be tight for a while but when push comes to shove I think Allen will run out a winner. He is in sensational form at the minute and I think he has the edge in the safety department which should be crucial in this final. Bingham is scoring nicely so if he gets the chances he could win the title but I don’t expect him to get enough to beat Allen here.
