Under the normal circumstances and quality-wise, Serbia seem to be the strongest team in the group and there was some hope that they will field the strongest possible lineup in the match against Italy and finish all the job tonight, but it's not going to happen after all. Nastasic(Manchester City), Markovic(Liverpool), Jojic(Borussia Dortmund), Spajic(Toulouse), Mitrovic(Anderlecht), Djuricic(Mainz), Vitas(Gent),...They're all going to miss the U21 match. The likes of Spajic and Vitas are ruled out through injury, while other guys are called up by Dick Advocaat in the national team. In other words, Serbia w/o the services of 3 top defenders(Nastasic, Vitas, Spajic), plus nearly the entire attacking line(Jojic, Djuricic, Mitrovic). Markovic didn't play much for the U21 side, being mostly included in the senior squad, but his absence is also a massive blow. Serbia are through if they manage to beat N.Ireland next week, so this match is more important to Italy who're simply in a must-win situation, but they're under a big pressure as well. Of course, Serbia will also be looking to make a positive result if possible. Serbia coach Radovan Curcic is well known as an ultra-defensive-minded coach, so due to absence of nearly all top player, he's probably going to stick to his "proven" defensive formation and tactic, hoping that winger F.Kostic(Stuttgart) will make a difference up front on his own.

Serbia will put in a big effort tonight, there's no doubt about that at all, but they're still going to field a "B" side here. Also, Serbia are through if they beat N.Ireland next week(even this weakened side should be able to do that, plus they could be well strengthened with some guys from the national team in that match), while Italy due to inferior H2H with Belgium simply have to pick up all three points tonight. The price for HW will probably drop very soon.

From what I read, Serbia have got a good chance to be among the best second-placed teams. Anyway, it doesn't change too much ahead of tonight's match. This is nowhere near being a side that played in the previous qualifying matches. It's going to be a "B" side at best. I also forgot to add that another important player will miss the match. Full back M.Petkovic is ruled out through suspension, while att.mid. Luka Milunovic(3 goals in the qualies) has been dropped out of the squad due to lack of playing time at Red Star this year. At least 5 or 6 players from this squad didn't make a single appearance for the U21 team. The likes of M.Jojic(Borussia Dortmund), F.Djuricic(Mainz), A.Mitrovic(Anderlecht) will probably join the team, while M.Petkovic(Red Star) returns from suspension. According to Dick Advocaat, Lazar Markovic will (surely?) not play for Serbia U21. He played (86 minutes) for the national team vs.France and is unlikely to be risked. He didn't say a word about Nastasic though, but obviously he will not take the part either, because he played the entire match vs.France. When it comes to others: Jojic(didn't play), Djuricic(30 minutes vs.France), Mitrovic(15 minutes vs.France).

In Group 3 today, Netherlands played at home to Slovakia. Netherlands were (I think) in with a good chance of finishing as one of the best second-placed teams even if they lost, but Slovakia had to win to win the group to stand any chance of qualfying - the stats show that Slovakia dominated the game and they won 1-0. Another game is currently in progress - in Group 10, France U21 host Iceland U21. France have already won the group to qualify. Iceland need at least a point to have a chance of finishing as one of the best four second-placed teams. So France can afford to lose, while Iceland need at least a point. In Group 4 tomorrow (Tuesday), Spain are at home to Austria. Spain have won the group and qualified, Austria will need at least a point and possibly a win to get a "best four second" place. A big factor here must be motivation - but there certainly COULD be some value backing the team needing the points if the odds are long enough.

Assuming Italy win, then Serbia would go above Belgium to finish second in the group - and give themselves a small chance of being one of the best runners up. Goal difference is important, so a big Serbian win would help them. Austria are away to Spain in Group 4 A draw probably won't be enough for Austria - so they will almost certainly need to win. If they win, they will definitely be one of the best four runners up. One advantage they have is that Spain have already qualified. Latest odds Spain 1.16 Draw 10.5 Austria 19.0 Sweden are at home to Turkey in Group 7 There are a lot of permuations in thei group with Sweden playing Turkey and Greece playing Poland and all four having a chance of finishing first or second. The most interesting game to me is Sweden v Turkey. Both are on 13 points. Both teams need to win here to stand a chance of either winning the group or finishing as a best runner up. Their best hope is that Greece beat Poland - then a win for Sweden or Turkey will see them win the group. If Sweden or Turkey end up in second place, they might need a big win to be one of the best runners up because of their relatively poor goal difference. Latest odds Sweden 2.2 Draw 3.6 Turkey 3.5 With both teams needing to win, there could be a few goals here. Summary Looking at it overall (it's a complex picture) - I think Italy will probably beat Cyprus to qualify as group winners. That will leave Austria, Sweden, Turkey and Serbia (and possibly Poland) in with a chance of getting one of the best runners up spots. Austria, Sweden, Turkey and Serbia would all have to win.

The guys from the NT will not be allowed to play in today's match, while the current squad is hit by more injury/suspension problems. The key full-back M.Petkovic returns from suspension though, but Nastasic, Mitrovic, Jojic, Markovic and Djuricic are all going to miss the match, Brasanac is ruled out through injury as well as Vitas i Spajic, while the likes of Causic, Kovacevic and Cosic are all suspended.
