MPLouis Posted February 24, 2014 Share Posted February 24, 2014 This runs from 15th March to 4th April 2014. 16 countries qualified (including the hosts Costa Rica), and have been drawn in four groups of four teams - Group A Costa Rica Venezuela Italy Zambia Group B Ghana North Korea Germany Canada Group C New Zealand Paraguay Spain Japan Group D Mexico Colombia China PR Nigeria The top two in each group qualify for the knock out stages. This will be the fourth U17 Womens World Cup. The previous three were won by North Korea, South Korea and France, and the runners up were USA, Japan and North Korea. Of the previous winners and runners up, only North Korea and Japan have qualified this time. The other four countries failed to qualify. This time, I think Japan, North Korea and Germany should be among the favourites. South Korea beat Japan in the final of the 2010 tournament which was held in Trinidad and Tobago, in the same part of the world as Costa Rica. As far as I know, all matches will be streamed live on Fifa's website As this is a Fifa tournament, I'm fairly confident that bookmakers will be covering it. I'll post up odds when they start to appear, which is likely to be a few days before the first games start on Saturday 15th March. No one is quoting any odds yet, but frequently odds are only offered at the last minute, or occasionally only in-play. Also, I've found bookmakers are more likely to offer odds on 'minor matches' like this on a quiet weekday than a busy weekend. I'll post odds as soon as I see them though. Both were impressive all over the pitch, but although some of the Spanish girls had great individual skill, collectively Japan were a class above. Japan are the holders of the Womens World Cup, and I think womens (and girls) football is taken pretty seriously there. I don't think there are odds available for winning the tournament, but I think Japan will be hard to beat. My other early impression is how well the African countries are doing - Ghana beat North Korea, Nigeria beat China and Zambia lost to Italy - that's two wins out three against three fancied opponents. I think Ghana or Nigeria could easily get to the final. Both countries did well in the last tournament in 2012. Ghana were less impressive than they'd been when I'd seen them in their first two group games, and Italy were better than I expected. Italy probably had the better of the first half, and Ghana the better of the second. Italy missed a penalty which would have put them 3-1 up early in the second half. Ghana had a goal correctly disallowed for offside near the end, and then got a deserved equaliser from a free kick. I thought a draw was probably a fair result. They've only conceded one goal in the whole tournament, and that was a late consolation for Venezuela in the semi-final when Japan were already 4-0 up. Spain are a skilful side and they had some impressive results in the knockout stage, beating Nigeria and Italy without conceding and will surely try to learn from studying their earlier defeat. Japan are probably still a class above them though, with defensive organisation, possession, fast skilful attacking and powerful accurate shooting. If Spain don't concede early, and ideally take the lead, then they have a chance, but I think it's a fairly small one if Japan play to their normal level. Of course it would be foolish of them to assume it will be easy because they beat Spain before.
