First, the review of the 2012 season from me. As Martin Luther King said: "If we are to go forward, we must go back" ;)

2012 table
sdahb.jpg ************************************************************** 1st Sligo Rovers An outstanding season for the Bit O’Red who have won a long-awaited title. Although they remained without two best players (Doyle and Ryan moved to the SPL) and their most-successful manager ever (Paul Cook) before the season starts, Sligo (with new coach Ian Baraclough) dominated throughout the whole season. The team played attacking and confident as evidenced by their overall performance with just three defeats (two of them when the league was already decided). notable players: McGuinness, Ndo, Lynch, Cretaro, Quigley and North. 2nd Drogheda United Drogs with the most experienced coach in the league (Mick Cooke) have done a great job in the transfer window before the start of the season, but no one expected such good results for them (the biggest surprise of the year). Second place and conquered the League Cup - season to remember. The combination of experienced and young players with great attacking power and consistency of good results (which lacked the past seasons) were their trademark. notable players: McNally, Foley, Hand, Gavin Brennan, Hynes and Declan O'Brien. 3rd St Patrick’s Athletic Return of coach Liam Buckley brought a very solid season for the Saints. They played very attractive football and were a joy to watch, although there have been many changes in the transfer window. Unfortunately, the team failed to achieve a better performance - in the league have played a lot of draws in the games they had to win and didn't won a long-awaited FAI Cup as they lost in the final after extra time. A solid season could easily be even better, but didn't. notable players: O'Brien, Browne, Carroll, O'Connor, Forrester and Fagan. 4th Shamrock Rovers Even though they finished fourth in the League and reached League Cup final, the season for the Hoops however was a disaster from start to finish. They were likely the strongest team on paper and the biggest favorite for the title, but impressive results and recognizable play were lacking. As usual in such situations, (new) manager Stephen Kenny was sacked after just half a year. Also, departure of their star (Twigg) is another thing that makes this a season which they will want to forget. notable players: Finn, McCabe and Twigg. 5th Derry City Although they were weakened in 2012, it was a good season for them thanks to the conquered FAI Cup and qualified for the Setanta Cup finals. Average defense, poor performance at the Brandywell and inability of constant results were reasons for just fifth place in the league. Declan Devine (who replacing Stephen Kenny) has failed to worthy replace former chief since the Candystripes haven't won many matches where they were favorites (had a five games losing streak in September). notable players: Doherty, Higgins, McLaughlin, Patterson and McDaid. 6th Cork City A solid season for the team (with some of the best support in the league) that played in the First division due to financial problems before. However, a really poor games (especially from new players) at the beginning of the season and even 12 draws in thirty games (the mid-season slump of seven draws in eight games) are the reasons for the mid-table and a worse ranking than their potential. Defensive closing and organizational structure were their weaknesses, as a result of playing in a lower range. notable players: Gearoid Morrissey, Daryl Horgan, Sullivan and O'Neill. 7th Bohemians Regardless of the fact that they ended up on the 7th place, it was a good season for the Gypsies. They had big financial problems before the start of the season and there were almost all new and young players. And in such conditions, they managed to defeat twice its great rival Shamrock (4:0 at home was their best performance of the season and 1:0 was their first win away in Tallaght). The team showed character, but obviously don't have experience and offensive power that are required for better results. notable players: Evan McMillian, Feely, McEvoy and Corcoran. 8th Shelbourne The first top flight season after 5 years didn't go well for the Reds, even though they ensure survival. Eighth place is not the goal for one of the most successful clubs in the country. A general lack of consistent results throughout the season and a very poor performance at Tolka Park are disappointing for their fans. Shels had more capacity than they show primarily due to poor tactics and management. They lost convincingly the FAI Cup semi-final against Derry at home, which reflects their complete season. notable players: Cassidy, Kavanagh and Hughes. 9th UCD Traditionally the youngest team in the league, as ever, played an attractive brand of football but finished in bottom of the table which is common for them, after remain without top players at the end of each season. The Students are attacking focused team, and because of that the defense was the worst part of the team (which reduced their ambition and team spirit but at the start of the season - only two wins in the first five months). Still have some talented players and midfield is functioning very well. notable players: Leahy, Paul O'Conor, Corry, Rusk and David McMillan. 10th Bray Wanderers The Seagulls have lost several key players before the start of the season and a bad year was expected of them. But they've failed more than they expected (the worst performer at home in the league, winning just one game in the second half of the season). Only return of club legend Byrne (scored nearly half of team goals) and a combination of unfortunate circumstances in other two clubs have saved them from relegation. Coach Pat Devlin is on the level, but the approach of players has been very bad. notable players: Danny O'Connor, Waters, Houston and Jason Byrne. 11th Dundalk They started with new management and a young team last season. However financial turmoil and an uncertain future of club during the season resulted in a disastrous season for the Lilywhites. A total of three wins all season and a goal difference (23:63) best reflect their performances. Yet they managed to stay in the league due to Monaghan withdrawal from competition and good results in the promotion/relegation play off against Waterford (4:2 on aggregate). notable players: Rafter. Limerick The Super Blues were impressive in the First division with seven other clubs. Waterford (defeated by them all four times) and Longford were the only serious opponents, but at the end they reached a long-awaited return to the promised land. Also, the semi-finals of the League Cup is worth noting. With promotion, a new stadium being built and the best financial situation the club has had in a long time, the expectations are high, and merited. notable players: Tracy, Gamble, Bradley, Gaffney, O'Leary and Behan. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Sligo Rovers won their first League of Ireland title since 1977 after beating fellow title contenders St. Patrick’s Athletic in a dramatic game as Mark Quigley’s 87th minute penalty proved to be the decisive goal.
  • Derry City were crowned as the FAI Ford Cup Champions following a 3-2 win over St. Patrick’s Athletic after extra-time.
  • Drogheda United won the EA Sports Cup following a 3-1 victory over Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght Stadium.
  • The Airtricity League Premier Division lost another club as Monaghan United drop out due to financial reasons.
  • Limerick were promoted to the top tier of Irish football for the first time in 19 years.
  • Dundalk win 4-2 on aggregate against Waterford United in play-off and remain in the LoI.

Mcnasara will you just be doing the premier league or will you be doing the first division as well. Mcnasara cheers keep up the good work.:ok

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013

Just a small piece worth noting McNasara - brilliant write-up thus far by the way - for me Stephen Bradley is one of Limerick's most important players and was for them too last season.
:ok

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Right, I've decided to get the ball rolling on some form of a preview of the clubs for the upcoming season. Bohemians Bohs have lost a few key and important players in the pre-season, but the core of their young team remains. They will be looking to improve upon last season's solid consolidation of their league status. Realistically, while finances remain tight at the club, it is likely that another mid-table finish beckons for the north Dublin club. Players in: Ciaran Nangle (midfielder, UCD), Dean Delany (goalkeeper, Shelbourne), Darragh Hanaphy (striker/winger, Newry City), Niall Forrester (winger, Sacred Heart), Conor O'Brien (midfielder, USA), Chris Lyons (midfielder, UCD), Stephen Paisley (defender, Shelbourne), Darragh Reynor (full back, Longford Town), Shane Murray (midfielder, Arklow Town), Shane Fitzgerald (midfielder, Athlone) Players out: Evan McMillan (centre half, Sligo Rovers), Keith Ward (midfielder, Dundalk), Dinny Corcoran (striker, UCD), Kevin Feely (centre half, Charlton Athletic), Craig Sexton (goalkeeper, Athlone). Advantages

  • Second season with Aaron Callaghan in charge and therefore stability
  • Have kept the core of young players from last season and therefore stability
  • Have brought in a good goalkeeper in Dean Delany
  • Have brought in good young players (Chris Lyons, Ciaran Nangle)
  • Have brought in an adequate replacement at centre half (Stephen Paisley)
Disadvantages
  • Have lost two very important defenders (Evan McMillan and Kevin Feely)
  • Still have too young a squad to really push for a higher table finish, therefore inexperience
  • Lack any form of goalscorer, and will struggle to score goals and win games
  • May struggle for leadership and experience this season, while Owen Heary is yet another year older at 36 and will undoubtedly play less

Predicted finishing place 8th position - will be a hard team to beat, but won't be winning many games.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Bray Wanderers Bray will look to build upon last season's performance once again this year, by relying upon the good and hard work of manager Pat Devlin and also upon the many disciplined young players they have at their disposal in their squad. Pat Devlin will look to get the best out of his young squad once again, and if Jason Byrne can stay fit they will have a reliable goal source. However, they've lost some very good midfielders during the pre-season and there's a lot of 'ifs' attached to their chances of success this season. It'll be a difficult season for the club. Players in: Gary Dempsey (midfielder, Waterford United), Shane O'Neill(striker, Wayside Celtic), Eoin Hyland (defender/midfielder, St. Pats Athletic), Bidemi Afolabi (striker, Clongowes Wood), Sean Holmes(goalkeeper, Cherry Orchard), Paul Malone (midfielder, Belgrove FC),Peter Thomas (defender, Landen United) Players out: DaveMassey (defender, Dundalk), Sean Houston (midfielder, Derry City),Adam Hanlon (midfielder, Shelbourne), Lee Dixon (midfielder, AthloneTown), Jonathan Kelly (midfielder, Athlone Town). Advantages

  • Long term servant of Bray, Pat Devlin remains in charge, providing stability to the club's project
  • Jason Byrne remains for another season, and his presence and goals will give them an edge
  • A large squad, where youngsters are given an opportunity to progress means a hungry, determined squad
  • The return of Gary Dempsey to the team for his third spell at the club. Very important midfielder.
Disadvantages
  • Have lost three important players in the pre-season (Dave Massey, Sean Houston & Adam Hanlon)
  • Too much reliance upon youth in the squad
  • While Jason Byrne still has the quality, he is another year older – may struggle to play every week

Predicted finishing place 11th position – it will be hard for Bray to avoid relegation this season– a relegation playoff looms

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Cork City Cork have kept the core of their squad that performed well last season, and will look to push on this season, full of renewed confidence now that they've consolidated Premier Division status. Having kept the core of a very good squad, I believe they can improve upon last season's league finish. However, they've had a lot of personnel changes up front, and without a reliable or settled attack, this could hamper their efforts. Players in: Darren Dennehy (defender, Barnet), Sean Brosnan (striker,Limerick), Daryl Kavanagh (winger/striker, Shamrock Rovers), Danny Furlong (striker, Wexford Youths), Denis Behan (striker, Limerick), Adam Rundle (winger/striker, West Auckland Town) Players out: Gavin Kavanagh (defender, Waterford United), Tadhg Purcell(striker/winger, free transfer), Davin O'Neill (striker/winger, Cobh Ramblers), Keith Quinn (midfielder, Longford Town), Vinny Sullivan(striker, Waterford United), Keigan Parker (striker, Irvine Meadow). Advantages

  • Tommy Dunne remains in charge, for his fourth season in charge
  • Have kept the core of their squad, which is full of a good blend of young talent and old wise and experienced heads
  • Club legend Denis Behan returns to the club
  • Many talented attacking players have joined the club (Sean Brosnan, Daryl Kavanagh & Danny Furlong)
  • Kevin Murray and Neal Horgan begin the season fit this year.
Disadvantages
  • Have lost two important attacking players in Davin O'Neill and Vinny Sullivan, who combined scored over half their league goals last season
  • Many changes in their attacking line-up may result in a lack of goals due to players settling in
  • Lack one out-and-out goalscorer. Danny Furlong is probably the man for the job, but inexperienced at this level

Predicted finishing place 5th position – will look to make Turner's Cross a fortress, and should compete away from home too. A strong season awaits.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Derry City Derry will begin this season on a high after their cup heroics at the end of last season.Their FAI Cup final victory was the highlight of the season. However, they also did finish the season strongly and therefore they have every reason to be confident for this season. However, they've lost some important players and as a whole their team is probably slightly weaker this season. Players in: Paddy Kavanagh (winger, Shelbourne), Sean Houston (midfielder,Bray), Michael Rafter (striker, Dundalk), Marc Griffin (striker, Dundalk), Joseph Coll (goalkeeper, Manchester United), Thomas Crawley (winger, Longford Town) Players out: David McDaid (striker,York City), Stephen McLaughlin (winger, Nottingham Forest), ConorMurphy (striker, St. Pats Athletic), Mark Farren (striker,Glenavon) Advantages

  • Declan Devine begins his second season in charge, and therefore added stability for the club
  • Have kept a good core of the first team squad at the club for another season.
  • Signed three talented attacking players in Paddy Kavanagh, Michael Rafter & Marc Griffin
  • Signed two young, talented midfielders in Sean Houston and Thomas Crawley
  • Have lots of young and exciting players coming through their squad.
Disadvantages
  • Have lost two important attacking players in David McDaid and Stephen McLaughlin, who combined scored over half their league goals last season
  • They are starting the season with a small enough first team squad, which may cause problems during the season
  • Have made a lot of changes in attack, which may result in problems as they settle into the squad
  • Have lost long-term servant of the club, Mark Farren, who had scored over 100 league goals for the club

Predicted finishing place 7th position – cup distractions and a small squad will test the resolveand strength of Derry this season

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Drogheda United Drogheda had their best season since winning the Premier Division in 2007, by finishing second in the league and winning the League Cup. Nobody could have expected the season Drogheda had, but Mick Cooke did an incredible job. It will be difficult for the team to repeat last season's successes however this season, but they have brought in some good players and kept all their key players. It will be interesting to see how they balance their league, cup and European campaigns this year. Players in: Gary O'Neill (striker, Shamrock Rovers), Graham Rusk (striker,UCD), Paul O'Connor (defender/midfielder, UCD), David Cassidy (midfielder, Shelbourne), Dean Gaynor (striker, Drogheda Town) Players out: Tiarnan Mulvenna (striker, Dundalk), John Sullivan (midfielder, Dundalk), Sean Brennan (midfielder, Shelbourne), Paul Crowley (midfielder, Shelbourne) Advantages

  • Mick Cooke begins his third season in charge of Drogheda, after turning the club's fortunes around in the last two seasons
  • Have kept pretty much all the first xi of the team together for the new season
  • Signed two good strikers in Gary O'Neill and Graham Rusk, to give them more attacking options
  • Signed two good midfielders in Paul O'Connor and David Cassidy
Disadvantages
  • May have over-achieved last season and therefore may suffer from stagnancy this season
  • Their relatively small squad may not be adequate enough for their league, cup and European campaigns
  • May simply lack the quality in their squad this season against a resurgent Shamrock Rovers

Predicted finishing place 3rd position – I expect another good season from Drogheda, but they'll be a step behind the top two.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Dundalk Dundalk survived as a club and in the Premier Division last season by the skin of their teeth, but the future is bright again for the club. With Stephen Kenny in charge they have a manager with lots of experience, and they've made a lot of interesting signings and their squad is definitely stronger than it was last season. Realistically they should be looking towards mid-table consolidation, and that's where I believe they will finish this season. Players in: John Dillon (midfielder, Sligo Rovers), Patrick Hoban (striker,Mervue United), Keith Ward (midfielder, Bohemians), Andy Boyle (defender, Shelbourne), Dane Massey (defender, Bray), Tiarnan Mulvenna (striker, Drogheda), Stephen O'Donnell (midfielder, Shamrock Rovers), John Sullivan (midfielder, Drogheda), Kurtis Byrne (striker,Ross County), Mark Rossiter (defender/midfielder, St. Pats Athletic), Richie Towell (defender/midfielder, free transfer), Vinny Faherty (midfielder/striker, St. Pats Athletic), Darren Meenan (winger, St.Pats Athletic), Aaron Shanahan (goalkeeper, Shamrock Rovers) Players out: Michael Rafter (striker, Derry City), Marc Griffin (striker,Derry City), Derek Foran (defender, Shamrock Rovers) Advantages

  • With Stephen Kenny, Dundalk finally have a manager who can re-build the team
  • The club now have financial security after almost going bust last season – and have signed a lot of promising players
  • Andy Boyle is an able replacement in defence for Derek Foran
  • Many of the signings made have a lot of League of Ireland experience, which will be a good addition to the young promising players like Chris Shields and John Mountney
Disadvantages
  • Stephen Kenny has a lot of doubters to prove wrong, after doing awful with Shamrock Rovers last season
  • With almost a completely new team, it could take quite a while for the team to settle and blend
  • They have lost three good players in Michael Rafter, Marc Griffin and Derek Foran
  • The team will still be quite weak in many areas across the pitch, and they lack a real goal threat

Predicted finishing place 9th position – Dundalk should stay clear of relegation this season, but it may not be pretty.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Limerick Limerick have returned to the Premier Division for the first time in 20 years and come into the top flight with a large amount of mystery about them, as well as plenty of confidence. They have financial backing and a new stadium to play in, a new manager and lots of new players. Many expect Limerick to do well this season, given all these circumstances and it's very possible, but realistically an upper-mid table finish is likely. Players in: Stephen Folan (defender, Newcastle United), Robbie Williams (defender, Plymouth Argyle), Craig Curran (striker, Rochdale), Danny Galbraith (winger, Hibernian FC), Axel Bossekota (midfielder/striker, free transfer), Val Feeney (striker, Athlone), Jonathan Tiffoney (defender, Alloa Athletic) Players out: Paudie Quinn (midfielder, Waterford United), Denis Behan (striker, Cork City), Sean Brosnan (striker, Cork City), Dave Ryan (goalkeeper, St. Pats Athletic), Corie Tracey (defender, Longford Town) Advantages

  • New manager Stuart Taylor comes into the job with a decent coaching record
  • The club will play in Thomond Park (home of Munster Rugby, capacity of 26,500)
  • The majority and core of the team that won promotion remains for the new season
  • Lots of big profile players have joined the club, including Robbie Williams, Danny Galbraith and Jonathan Tiffoney
Disadvantages
  • Too much new factors involved – new manager, new stadium and a new division for the club, means things are quite unpredictable
  • Lots of the new players arriving have absolutely no League of Ireland experience
  • The new stadium will look ridiculous given Limerick won't have huge attendances. Atmosphere will be an issue

Predicted finishing place 6th position – I don't know what to expect of this Limerick team, but I think they'll finish in the top half of the table.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Shamrock Rovers A lot has changed at Shamrock Rovers for the first time in three years. A lot of players have left and a lot of players have joined. A new manager has arrived too in the shape of Trevor Croly. There is reason to be optimistic again at Shamrock Rovers after a disastrous season last year, and they will no doubt be a strong force again this season. Players in: Jason McGuinness (defender, Sligo Rovers), James Chambers (midfielder, St. Pats Athletic), Mark Quigley (striker, Sligo Rovers), Sean O'Connor (winger, St. Pats Athletic), Barry Murphy (goalkeeper, St. Pats Athletic), Danny Ledwith (midfielder, UCD), Shane Robinson (midfielder, FC Haka), Derek Foran (defender, Dundalk), Richard Brush (goalkeeper, Sligo Rovers), Karl Sheppard (striker, Reading), David Elebert (defender, Fylkir) Players out: Aaron Shanahan (goalkeeper, Dundalk), Stephen O'Donnell (midfielder, Dundalk), Aaron Greene (winger, Sligo Rovers), Gary O'Neill (striker, Drogheda), Killian Brennan (midfielder, St. Pats Athletic), Sean Gannon (defender, St. Pats Athletic), Daryl Kavanagh (winger/striker, Cork City), Jack Memery (defender, Shelbourne), Graham Gartland (defender, Shelbourne), Oscar Jannson (goalkeeper, Orebro), Reyaard Pieterse (goalkeeper, Kaizer Chiefs), Gary Twigg (striker, Portadown), Craig Sives (defender, Hume City FC), Kerrea Gilbert (defender, free transfer) Advantages

  • Trevor Croly has come into the club as manager, and as an ex-player will understand what the job means
  • A lot of the core of the squad have remained
  • Many ex-Shamrock Rovers faces have re-joined the club, and the squad has definitely been strengthened with all the signings
  • Jason McGuinness, Mark Quigley and Richard Brush all return to Tallaght, having joined from champions Sligo Rovers – in itself a sort of coup
  • Barry Murphy re-joins the club, meaning the club has a very reliable goalkeeper
  • Many of the deadwood players have left the club
Disadvantages
  • Trevor Croly has new managed before, and his inexperience may cost the club points
  • The club has lost its hero of the last few years, and top goalscorer Gary Twigg – replacing his goals may be a challenge
  • There will be a lot of pressure on Shamrock Rovers to perform from the start of the season
  • With all the change at the club, they may suffer from a slow start to the season

Predicted finishing place 2nd position – Shamrock Rovers will be much stronger this season and challenge for the title, but ultimately just fall short.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Shelbourne Shelbourne consolidated their Premier Division status last season and had a comfortable season back in the top flight, but the pre-season period has seen Shelbourne lose a lot of players, and they simply have not replaced them with good enough players in my opinion. It really could be a difficult season for Shelbourne this year, and I can see them struggling. Players in: Pat Flynn (defender, St. Pats Athletic), Sean Brennan (midfielder, Drogheda United), Jack Memery (defender, Shamrock Rovers), Paul Crowley (midfielder, Drogheda United), Dean Kelly (striker, St. Pats Athletic), Adam Hanlon (midfielder, Bray), Graham Gartland (defender, Shamrock Rovers), Ger Hanley (goalkeeper, Mervue United), Robert Bayly (midfielder, Longford) Players out:Kevin Dawson (midfielder, Yeovil), David Cassidy (midfielder, Drogheda United), Paddy Kavanagh (midfielder, Derry City), Conan Byrne (midfielder, St. Pats Athletic), Andy Boyle (defender, Dundalk), Dean Delany (goalkeeper, Bohemians), Stephen Paisley (defender, Bohemians), Gareth Matthews (defender, UCD), Sean Byrne (defender, Athlone), Paul Skinner (goalkeeper, Athlone), Philip Gorman (striker, Athlone), Barry Clancy (midfielder, Athlone), Chris Benion (goalkeeper, Longford), Anthony Murphy (midfielder, Sheriff YC) Advantages

  • Alan Matthews remains in charge, and is in his fourth season in charge at Shelbourne – his experience will be vitally important
  • Top goalscorer Philip Hughes remains at the club, as does key defender Brian Shorthall
  • Experienced heads have been signed in the form of Pat Flynn, Sean Brennan, Pau Crowley and Graham Gartland
Disadvantages
  • Shelbourne have only kept five of their squad from last season, and only have 15 first team players currently
  • Many of Shelbourne's talented, key players have left; David Cassidy, Paddy Kavanagh, Conan Byrne, Andy Boyle & Philip Gorman
  • Their only experienced goalkeeper has left as well – Dean Delany. Instead they will be relying upon a 21 year old – Ger Hanley
  • All the changes in their squad will present a huge challenge in terms of getting the team gelled and settled

Predicted finishing place 12th position – I think Shelbourne are in a bit of trouble this year and will be the team to go down.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Sligo Rovers Sligo won their first title in 35 years last season and it was a really momentous occasion for the club – one which had been in the making for a few seasons. The club have been focused on keeping that momentum going during the pre-season and the squad is full of confidence for the new campaign and is largely unchanged. Sligo will be challenging once again for the league title this season and it will be hard to stop them. Players in: Evan McMillan (defender, Bohemians), Aaron Greene (winger, Shamrock Rovers), Anthony Elding (striker, Grimsby Town) Players out: John Dillon (midfielder, Dundalk), Jason McGuinness (defender, Shamrock Rovers), Mark Quigley (striker, Shamrock Rovers), Richard Brush (goalkeeper, Shamrock Rovers) Advantages

  • Ian Baraclough remains in charge for his second season at the club. He is well respected due to his reputation as a footballer and a young manager
  • The squad remains largely unchanged and so shall remain very settled this season.
  • The signings of Evan McMillan, Aaron Greene and Anthony Elding strengthen the team precisely in the areas where they have lost two key men
  • There's a good mix of experience and youth in the squad, and many young talented players should feature even more this season
Disadvantages
  • The loss of Mark Quigley's goals could be difficult to replace
  • With Danny North still not ready after his injury last season, goal options will come in the form of two new players – not an ideal scenario
  • With so little change in the squad, there may be a case of stagnancy and lack of hunger to win the title again

Predicted finishing place 1st position – Sligo have all the tools to retain their title this season, and I believe they will be successful in doing so.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 St. Patricks Athletic St. Pats were excellent last season in their style of football, but ultimately weren't able to score enough goals to win enough matches. Alas I predict a similar situation this season. They are still a strong force however, and will be very hard to beat. It really will comedown to a question of whether Liam Buckley will want to sacrifice the crisp passing football for some extra goals this season – and it's a fine balance to find. Players in: Conan Byrne (midfielder, Shelbourne), Killian Brennan (midfielder, Shamrock Rovers), Shane McFaul (midfielder, FC Haka), Sean Gannon (defender, Shamrock Rovers), Dave Ryan (goalkeeper, Limerick), Conor Murphy (striker, Derry), Jordan Keegan (midfielder/striker, Scunthorpe) Players out: Mark Rossiter (defender/midfielder, Dundalk), Vinny Faherty (midfielder/striker, Dundalk), Darren Meenan (winger, Dundalk), Eoin Hyland (defender/midfielder, Bray), James Chambers (midfielder, Shamrock Rovers), Sean O'Connor (winger, Shamrock Rovers), Barry Murphy (goalkeeper, Shamrock Rovers), Pat Flynn (defender, Shelbourne), Dean Kelly (striker, Shelbourne) Advantages

  • Liam Buckley begins his second season in charge, and the style of football he encourages will continue
  • The defence remains unchanged, and should become stronger with added experience this season
  • St. Pats midfield looks almost as strong as last season, and they've certainly got more options in the middle of the park this season
  • The signing of young, talented striker Conor Murphy is an exciting prospect
Disadvantages
  • Assistant manager Trevor Croly has moved to Shamrock Rovers to become their manager – his absence could be telling
  • The club relied too heavily upon Christy Fagan for goals last season. If he doesn't score they will struggle to score
  • The loss of James Chambers and Sean O'Connor could be very difficult to replace in midfield

Predicted finishing place 4th position – St Pats will compete for the title but fall short due to a lack of a goalscoring threat up front.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 UCD UCD retained their right to play in the Premier Division last season, and that will be the objective once again for the Students. Martin Russell has done a wonderful job for the last few seasons with a tiny budget to keep the university club in the Premier Division. Relying completely on youth once again, motivation, organisation and hard work will be the key once again this season to avoid relegation. Players in: Dinny Corcoran (striker, Bohemians), Craig Walsh (midfielder, Longford), Gareth Matthews (defender, Shelbourne) Players out: Ciaran Nangle (midfielder, Bohemians), Chris Lyons (striker, Bohemians), Graham Rusk (striker, Drogheda United), Paul O'Connor (defender/midfielder, Drogheda United), Danny Ledwith (midfielder, Shamrock Rovers) Advantages

  • Martin Russell enters his fifth year in charge of UCD, and his work will be vitally important in keeping UCD in the league
  • There is a largely unchanged squad from the previous season
  • Dinny Corcoran has an eye for goal and could provide double figures in goals this season
  • Robbie Creevy returns from a year's hiatus, and his presence in midfield will benefit the team as a whole
  • With a large youth squad, there is a lot of options available to aid the first team squad
Disadvantages
  • There is a genuine lack of experience in the team, which will lose the team games during the course of the season
  • The loss of five key players in Ciaran Nangle, Paul O'Connor, Chris Lyons, Graham Rusk and Danny Ledwith will be a difficult challenge
  • Having sold Paul Corry to Sheffield Wednesday in the middle of last season, this will be a full season without his talents in midfield
  • With no obvious goalscoring threat, there may be a lack of goals for the Students

Predicted finishing place 10th position – UCD will battle from the start to the end of the season and just avoid a relegation playoff place.

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 Many thanks to Batigol who really did a great job! :clap:clap:clap I brought a little color into preview with previous post, but Batistuta has already said everything there was to say. Think that this thread would be of great benefit to all punters and fans of League of Ireland. ;) Several season bets at Paddy Power for me: Top six finish: Drogheda United @1.53 medium stake Winner: St Patrick's @5.50 low stake Finnish bottom: Bray Wanderers @3.00 low stake Best of luck this season, at least let it be successful just like last year! :ok

Hi all, great to see such interest in the league this year. I was looking at the top goalscorer market, and the 7/1 on Mark Quigley with Boylesports caught my eye - as short as 4/1 elsewhere). Shame Boyles are going win only though, as EW 1/4 the odds first 4 would be very appealing imo. Just wondering if anyone knew if he would be on penalties for Shams this year? I see he is a doubt for tonight, and after that Shams fixtures aren't great - Pats (H) Boha (A) Shels (A). So might be worth holding fire for a couple of weeks. Any other views on this market? Cheers

Re: Ireland > Airtricity Premier League > preview 2013 There's a definite vacuum in the league this year for top goalscorer, what with Twigg having left the league and Danny North unfit until May. The reality is a goalscorer with between 15 and 20 goals will likely be top goalscorer. Candidates have to be; Mark Quigley, Ciaran Kilduff, Anthony Elding, Danny North, Christy Fagan and maybe somebody like Graham Rusk/Gary O'Neill at Drogheda and then maybe somebody at Derry, Cork and Limerick. Even Philly Hughes and Jason Byrne cannot be discounted. Quigley will most likely take penalties. He scored the winning penalty versus St. Pats last season, which clinched the title for Sligo. He is a cool customer, and I'd be surprised if he didn't take on that duty for Shamrock Rovers. Also thanks for the info Donkeysupreme. Another signing worth talking about - Sligo Rovers signed Kieran Djilali there on Monday. He's a tricky left winger who started his career at Crystal Palace and made around 30 league appearances for the club too. He's most likely going to be first choice eventually, maybe after a few weeks. He could be very dangerous, and it further strengthens Sligo Rovers in my opinion.

Thanks for that. Yes I had heard good things about Edling, he hit the ground running apparently. The last of the 14/1 for him was snapped up earlier in the week I think. Believe he is 12/1 with Boyles, again win only. Ladbrokes only offering 1/5 odds first 3, and didn't even have Danny North listed last time I looked. Dont seem interested in this league anymore. They made a few ricks with their pricing at the start of last season, hopefully we can nail one or two this time around. I might take Quigley & Edling against the field with Boyles for an interest. Sligo have a Some nice looking fixtures after tonight's tricky opener. GL all
