Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern and Ryman Prem Oct 13 Although it's not completely clear yet what is happening at Carshalton (Paul Vines seems to be looking for another club, Harry Harding is looking forward to playing tonight), I've taken Corals' early show of 11/10 about Hastings United on Saturday. In part this is a necessary play as I'm not around much before the weekend, so it is risky, but I think Hastings are a decent outfit who have deserved a bit more from their games, though they do lack a natural scorer.

That's the only explanation I can find for the extrordinary price of 5/1 for Chalfont to win at Daventry in Southern 1 Central. I couldnt get much on but even so. We are 13th in the league but only played 5 games, and won 3 of them! It's actually a longer price than we were to win at Bishops Stortford in midweek! One of the most ludicrously wrong prices I have seen in almost a quarter of a century of betting. Get whatever you can on is my advice. Daventry 1.35 to beat us - I'd be laying that for thousands if I could!

Re: England > Weekend > Northern, Southern and Ryman Prem Oct 13 I posted Hastings United at Carshalton Athletic before the Bognor game, so I hope some of you managed to get on at a juicy 11/10 - a price I suspected wasn't long for this world. There have been few developments at Carshalton this week to suggest the narrative will be very much different - it's a spirited young squad who'll turn in some decent results soon but are going to take time to gel. They'll get better I'm sure but - as with the Bognor game last Tuesday - it's a case of feeding on the better prices when they appear. 5/6 Hastings is best price now and only very marginal value. Ilkeston Town at home to Stocksbridge Park Steels (23/20 BetVics) Two struggling sides but SPS are in far worse nick, with the only win a very fortunate one at Grantham a couple of weeks back. Other than that, it's just one or two points here and there and a succession of heavy defeats: their GD is -15 compared to Ilkeston's -5 from six defeats, suggesting that Ilkeston have been much more competitive. With some better cup performances in recent weeks, Ilkeston are decent value at this price. Frome Town away at Hitchin Town (21/10 widespread) Hitchin's bright start to the season is a distant memory: one win and five defeats in the last six. They can knock the ball about in pleasing fashion but they are lacking basic defensive organisation at the moment, and can't seem to hurt sides. They are vulnerable to the hard-working and that properly describes Frome, who have deserved a touch more than a point from recent games against St Neots and Banbury. Given the relative merits of the two sides, I can't make Frome this far out.

However, my figures suggest having a punt on Hitchin this weekend to beat Frome at even money. ( not looked for better yet ). HT are 1-0-3 at home, the 3 defeats vs current 1, 3 and 8. Frome are 9 but have played 2 more than HT. FT concede nearly 2 per game away which without going too much into detail gives HT a slight edge. Why am I going for HT, its just one of those gut feelings we have about teams so while I don't expect anyone to go with me, I just thought I'd put it down in writing and remind Ships I'm still alive !!! BTW, surely Leamington will have too much at Bashley who will need reminding they are playing 11 players this week !
