He won very easily when keenly ridden by D Fox, and if given a similar ride by the same jockey (who takes off a useful 3lb) then he could be thereabouts again today. Roger Varian has 3 wins and 2 places from 8 runners here at Wolverhampton (L.S.P. +5.67pts). Negatives - First time in a handicap today, which usually doesn't bode too well for winning maidens in their first handicaps as don't have a good overall record and three other last time out winners to contend with. 5.00 Wolverhampton: Al Freej - 1pt win @ 2/1 BetVictor (BOG)

Re: BBOTD Monday 20th February 425 Wolverhampton – Vanilla Rum – 17/2 – VC Has shown something like his old form since the application of blinkers with his best effort coming on his penultimate run when a gambled on winner coming 6l clear of the second. Put up 10 for that he jumped from a Class 7 to a Class 5 and finished down the field. However, to my eye, Joe Fanning wasn’t at this best on this occasion. Vanilla got stuck on the inside rail, was bumped in the early part of the race and stopped from gaining any momentum at least twice in the home straight. He went off at 4/1 that day and I’m happy to write that run off. Back in a Class 6 today and is now 17/2 – must be value if in the same form.
