  1. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread I think I may have been too harsh about the Shergar Cup in the past, I hope they have addressed many of my dislikes such as the indistinguishable colours of the teams , having a max field of 10 when there are 12 competitors, and also horse racing is not a team event, we the punters are betting on individual horses so I hope team tactics don't come into play. As for Dettori, yes he didn't commit a crime, but his true colours have come through in the last year, if I was his new boss I'd question his loyalty after doing the dirty on Sheikh Mohammed. His only loyalty is to himself.

  2. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread The dreadful Shergar Cup is back again, a concept they have not got right despite having its debut about 15 years ago. I see they have chosen Fallon and Dettori to ride. It seems those in charge simply brush their past under the carpet. What sort of role models are they? They never write or say anything bad about them in the media. Frankie got a hero's welcome back in May. On a positive note, I'm very much looking forward to seeing M Stoute's former stable jockey Gary Stevens, in my opinion he the best jockey I have ever seen ride in this country. Some of you may argue it may be Lester Piggott or even Young Joseph, for me it's G Stevens. Watch him on Saturday and you'll see why.

  3. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread

I agree with you here. It should be readily available info such as first time gelded. On another note, I've just received an email from betvictor offering me money back if my selection is 2nd to St Nicholas Abbey in the King George!
I've also ranted about this either in here or in the pub . When trainers have some sort of operation on a horse , the info should be readily available to punters. Paul Nicholls , David Pipe who punters put a lot of money on their horses , often refer to the succesful wind operation in the recent past especially after they've scooted up after a series of poor performances. Why not tell the public before the race , that they are very likely to leave their old form behind them.
  4. Re: Each way betting

I disagree Saint that win only is always better. Ew is always better in 16 runner plus hcp for example. Assume you get 20's and all have true 15-1 chance. Win only return to £2 win is £42. Ew return £1ew is £45 Sent from my GT-I9300 using PL Forum
Your 2 sentences contain plenty of material for a lengthy debate. Everything boils down to you as a punter/person. It depends on your strike rate , so for some it could be win only which is better , for some EW. As for EW is better for 16+ runner fields. Me I'm not too sure. The place terms for a 16 runner h'cap is the same for a 40 runner h'cap. Is it prudent to go EW when there are 30 -40 runners ? As for a horse's true chance or true odds , again that all down to opinion. If you rate a horse a 2/1 chance but 4/1 is available and still drifting , do you wade in? Do you go large ? I'm sure many of us have done our bolllocks in on a horse which is seemingly overpriced . Everything becomes more clear once they cross the line. Yesterday I relapsed and spent a full day in the bookies. I fancied Ikhtisas at Doncaster which was 11/4 early price. Was going to do a bog standard 1pt win , but when it opened up it was 4/1. So I bet 2pts EW , 4 times my originally intended stake. A couple of minutes later it carried on drifting to an eventual SP of 6/1. It won , but had I knew before the off it was going to be 6/1 I wouldn't have backed it. Crossing the line you could argue it was the best horse but the odds didn't relect it. How do punters determine a horse's true chance before the off when the odds drift or contract violently. Not too sure what you mean exactly with your EW examples , probably a typo.
  5. Re: Each way betting I'm sure BillyHills will agree that EW lucky 15s comprised of all long shots is a bookies dream , and I do them on occasions , and if we analyse the Lucky 15 thread I'm sure the win part of those bets are massively down. I'm not having a go or trying to rubbish those who participate. Just trying to ascertain whether punters are automatically giving up on the win part when they put these bets on. If some are , would it be better to put the entire stake on a place only lucky15 ,over a longer period of time wouldn't it be more profitable ? Probably once a year one of the big bookies release a statement that one lucky punter has got 6 winners from 8 on his Super Heinz at 5p stakes and returned a quarter of a million , this in turn gets more punters into doing these types of bets. We all know that Frankie got 7 out of 7 at Ascot a few years back and there were cries from bookies saying they've lost millions from small stake accumulator bets , lucky 15s , yankees etc. In the time since how much and more have they recouped from punters doing an all Frankie accumulator bet , Its been 16 years , has he had even a 4 timer in that time?

  6. Re: Each way betting How many punters on here put on EW bets on long priced horses and in their minds conceeding that they are only playing for place money ? This extends to those who engage in the EW Lucky 15 thread , when putting together 4 long shots , are we forfieting half the stake right from the start? I do , do them from time to time, but I do think its a big leak in punters bankrolls when they put these bets on. If I do a 9/2 shot each way , I am hopeful or relatively confident of a win and very confident of a place return at the very least. But when I do a 25/1 shot EW , in my mind I'm forfieting the win part and just hopeful of the place part. To be honest , I dont often do big prices EW , I prefer win only. In the Grand National I often have 5 to 8 horses running for me win only. ( I haven't had a return in that race since Papillion year 2000 !! but thats besides the point ) Is the win part of the EW bet on long shots a waste of stake ? Take last weeks golf open , the EW way terms were very generous ( compared to normal ) with some paying 8 places , when selecting a 66/1 0r 200/1 shot EW , are we chucking good money away ? The win part of the 66/1 shot will only come in once ,in every 66 tournaments theoretically speaking.

  7. Re: Thirsk placepot Very good luck with that. Have you considered having multiple selections in each leg or the legs which are trickier ? You get a much better chance of getting it up. I personally only like to go for the placepot if it seems very very hard to get up , where I'll perm a few hundred lines in the hope of a massive payout. (10p's of course)

  8. Re: The Jockey Thread

nothing wrong with the horse...I seen those races..poor effort...he will be forgotten about soon..his agent must be really struggling even the Dunlop yard are seeing him for what he is.....WEAK VERY WEAK
I don't watch racing on a daily basis , is he still retained jockey from Sheikh Mohammeds son ,Rashid ? ( dark blue colours )
  9. Re: Significant upgrading of races, over the next several months. It seems like the system is run by a secret group of guys who like to reward and help themselves. Its only certain courses which get the opportunity of staging the better races. Seemingly lesser tracks have zero chance of staging a higher profile race in the near future. Wouldn't it great if we from time to time see some decent horses at Catterick ,Newton Abbott,Bath etc etc... How many pattern races have they taken away in recent years from these smaller track , bit of a bumer if your local is Thirsk or Beverly. What about in Scotland ! At one stage there were a few decent races , now if I recall correctly its just the one staged on Gold Cup day. I recall a few times in the past attending the Scottish Derby , now defunct. It seems this attitude mirrors how governments and society works , the rich get richer and the poor get shafted as usual.

  10. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread

See' date=',,i would have thought the stewards would have asked for samples etc...but im struggling to find anything.. if anything was asked for, surely punters need to know something...to my weak eye..id say she was in season....but the last time they brought AOB up for not being forthcoming with info ...he was found guilty...and fined 130 euros....:rollin[/quote']i think trainers should voluntarily tell the media/public whether a filly/mare is in season or in foal. how often do we see a mare bolt up only for the commentator tell us the horse is in foal once shes crossed the winning post.information like this should be readily available, dont know how practical it will be ,but surely have a duty to the punters who support the industry via the bookies.
  11. Re: The Jockey Thread

SDS definitely the best jockey this year if a horse needs scrubbing along from an early stage. Did it twice this evening at Doncaster' date=' brilliant rides.[/quote'] I like him very much like him ,a top class jockeys in the making. Given the right push he could be Champion Jockey in the near future.
  12. Re: The Jockey Thread

If there is ever a Jockey on the down turn over the last few years..It has to be TED DURCAN...his stats are now struggling to hit 10%' date=' for a once very good jockey...Seen him in a couple tonight..woefull, well and truly a jockey to dodge IMO.[/quote'] I don't like to engage in jockey bashing for being rubbish however,I have to agree he has seemingly declined of late.I backed him in a couple of races today and was disappointed with the outcome of his riding performances. He used to be very competent, maybe it's the horses he's riding.
  13. Re: Significant upgrading of races, over the next several months. Minor deviation from the OP, now someone has mentioned Bloomfields, does anyone know anything about them? Are they the National Hunt division of Godolphin? Is it the same John Ferguson who is or was the bloodstock adviser to Sheikh Mohammed, most or maybe all of the Bloomfields horses are Ex Darley stock. Some of them rated so high that if they were under the care of lesser trainers they'd be stable stars.

  14. Re: Significant upgrading of races, over the next several months. The dates of some Gr1s are too close together also. Take for example the sprint division. The Kings Stand (5f) and Diamond Jubilee(6f) in mid June at Royal Ascot is followed by the July Cup a couple of weeks later , its the same horses which turn up. The Nunthorpe and Haydock Park Sprint is again two weeks apart in Aug/Sept. Both the Kings Stand and diamond Jubilee were recently promoted , but do we need 2 Gr1 sprints at the same meeting? Wouldn't it be better to have these 4 races spread out so they are roughly 6 weeks apart , for the benefit of owners and spectators? Also top sprinters requiring specific ground conditions can be trained for a specific race knowing there is a likelyhood of having ideal conditions at peak summer or beginning or end of season. Also races like the Falmouth Stakes and Nassau Stakes for female horses is just a month apart , are they really great races , yes they are Gr1s , but Gr1s which generate little media/ante post interest.

  15. Re: Significant upgrading of races, over the next several months. I think in recent years they have elevated the status of too many races. There are enough Gr1s at the moment, maybe one or two too many. Because of this there is a plethora of options for the genuine top class horses. A side effect is that some top races have lost their gloss. Take this weekends King George, in years gone by it was probably the biggest race of the summer with many weeks of hype and anticipation. This year it's just another big race with limited media interest. I remember in the past when it was a great race when we had the likes of Mtoto, Opera House , Dancing Brave etc... This year will we see another vintage renewal? Also some of the Gr1s for novices are only Gr1s in name as some of the performers can be Gr3 performers or sometimes not even that. Take the Triumph Hurdle or the Champion Bumper, how many of the horses who turn up in these races end up regular Gr1 performers? Even the Derby often refered to as "...the greatest race in the world..." ,how many who turn up end up as cabbages? I'd prefer top horses to turn up for Gr1s ,if you take the average OR of a Lockinge and the OR of the Arc' it is vastly different yet both Gr1s.

  16. Re: The Jockey Thread I like Young Joseph and Tom Queally, both very good, however both not top class, although Queally is not far off top class. Young Joseph is probably about 5 years away . It won't be long before Queally is in the same league as Moore ,Murtagh, Dettori, Spencer etc...

  17. Re: The Jockey Thread Thursdays Listed 1m6f race at leopardstown was a bit of a farce, last year's Irish St Ledger winner Royal Diamond was allowed a 20 length lead and ended up winning with ease, pretty inept of the other jockeys to let the winner get so far in front. I'm don't really follow Irish racing, but to me it happens with a bit of regularity.

  18. Re: Each way betting Long time Racing Post contributed, Richard Birch in today's column. " Punting low....a maximum bet of £500 EW on Big Time Billy (3/1) at York remaining on the bookies satchels after the staying on mare was beaten into a gut wrenching head for third." I'm fascinated by the concept of betting EW in low runner fields at shortish prices. That's a bet I do from time to time. I'm interested if the current crop of members have this type of bet in their arsenal. Is this something you'd do or would you be win only based on SP and under 8 runners?

  19. Re: Daily Racing Chat Thread

I think it is very poor race planning to have so many Gr1 tracks staging meetings this weekend. Chepstow , Newmarket , York , Ascot and also the prestigous Chester. There were so many top races today , that it was a fabulous day of racing. However I do think they should have been spaced out over separate different days because on some Saturdays the highlight of the day is just a listed race. Today we saw the Bunbury Cup, John Smiths Magnet Cup , July Cup as well as a handful of Group , listed and expensive handicaps. The first 3 named have in the past been the days main event, so why have these on one afternoon? Also I wish they would keep the midweek Group 1 races rather than moving them to Saturday. If it carries on the midweek races will just be the bread and butter races which is of no importance if punters miss them or not. Maybe in the near future the Cheltenham Gold Cup will be held on a Saturday too.
Nice to see many of the racing fraternity reading my post and making comments via the front page of the Racing Post in agreement to what I posted the other day. Many top figures blasted the decision to hold many top races in one afternoon , and they also agreed with my comment of moving the July Cup to a Saturday. I was a bit surprised not many members replied in agreement or disagreement.
