  1. Re: Quiz question Prime, you recall a Jimmy Fitzgerald /Mark Dwyer, Peter O'sullevan owned horse called Amigos? Approx evens fav, miles clear all the way, instead of falling / unshipping, Dwyer pulls up!!! Tried jumping off a bridge that night but landed on a ferry and ended up in Timbuktu.:p

  2. Re: Quiz question

no ...dont know' date=',,better be good, just spent 1/2 an hour on it.:rollin[/quote'] hahaha knew you'd like it Primevil. For those of you who don't like to respond to my posts, here's the answer. They were all miles clear at the last obstacle only to for the jockey to fall off . I beat the SP last night on Azure Fly, my only bet of the day , was about 10 lengths at the last jumped it ok but the horse went left afterwards and the jockey fell off. This is one aspect of jumps racing that I hate, it obviously happens very often ,but last night I had an above average sized bet and it hurt me quite a bit. Not blaming anyone but myself. I'm sure many of us in the past have benefited when the second positioned horse is left in front under same circumstances. Unfortunately Homebase was shut last night, but I didn't have money anyway. I tried locking myself in the garage and keeping the engine running but at 430am I realised the gypsies had removed half the garage roof slates.
  3. What's the connection? Azure Fly, Brave Spartacus, Special Envoy. For anybody with gray, receding or no hair, here's a bonus clue. Barton Bank. I might be back in a few hours to reveal the answer. It depends if Homebase is still open, I need a short piece of rope and some step ladders.

  4. Re: The Jockey Thread

Ive given a break on this dross, between Epsom and Ascot, and looking at yesterdays antics....A blown tyre=Mccoy and a full blown gamble....That one aint be used before has it?...LOL...We may as well not have jockey bookings declared until and hour before the race,,I know that cant happen,,but that was a piss take..
Blown tyre..........unoriginal as Primeval says. A few years back D Thomas and her conditional jockey used that excuse too with a horse called I am Blue , multiple Gr1 winning jockey R Johnson happened to be available and was backed from 25/1 to 5/1 and duly won. She claimed later that shedidnt know where the money came from, just like Jim Best with AP McCoy last week. In both instances the horses had dreadful form yet the money was spot on. I don't mind trainers and connections landing a gamble, if they foil my personal selections then I take my hat off to them, however it does annoy me when interviewed by the media and they claim to have no knowledge of the gamble. The trainer has to give the go ahead for the connections to put their money down so why not admit it and say something like "....yes we screwed the bookies over...."
  5. Re: The Jockey Thread

Great to see very competent jockey Dane O'Neil ride 4 winners at Newmarket' date=' great to see him get some recognition of his abilities by landing the Hamdan job.[/quote'] What an extremely competent jockey. From 6 rides at Beverly, 5 winners and a second. I've always liked Dane O'Neil
  6. Re: Where's my profit gone? Simple....you need to access your bet selection. You are picking losers not winners. I have the same problem too. I'd much rather back a 4/5 winner rather than backing a loser which has gone from 8/1 to 9/2. Beating SP is no good if they consistently lose.

  7. Re: Betting without emotion Many years ago I followed a horse called Samwar, I put it my notebook ( pre mobile phone / handheld computer days ) I think it had an OR in the 90s, anyway I had it down as a winner waiting to happen, I looked for its name in every edition of the Weekender and plotted a mini coup each time it was entered. I ended up backing the horse dozens of times over 3 or 4 seasons, it changed trainers a few times too. In the end I gave up, it eventually be wins on an AW track trained by Norma McCaulley off a rating in the 50s at 6/4. I've never followed a horse religiously since.

  8. Re: Betting without emotion I have veered away from betting on the jockey and trainers championships. I highly rate multiple Gr1 winning jockey R Moore, but whenever I back him for the title I end up focusing on his rides and from time to time back his mounts in the hope he'll get another one when the form tells me not to back it. Conversely last season R Hughes made an effort to win the championship by taking up all available spare rides and putting more effort in his rides. Not being a fan of his I'd have a few selections against his ride in the hope that someone else wins. I've not had a bet on the championship this year and it has allowed me to avoid the "spite" bets.

  9. Re: Betting without emotion Very interesting. I had an above average sized bet on Petrol the other night, my only bet since the Derby. Just seen the replay on RP having been down in recent days. I emotionally follow the horse and conversely had a bet thinking the conditions were right. I would have not bothered with the horse or race otherwise. This is a losing trait I have following horses trained by lower profile trainers especially when they have a few runs unplaced at big odds. I try to guess or work out when they'll release the handbrake.

  10. Re: Horses to Follow : June 2013 Top Offer Runs in today's 345 Newmarket on his handicap debut off 95. Forcast at around 3/1. Won impressively on his 2YO debut and subsequently shortened for Camalot's Guineas where he was well beat.Flopped again next time out and not seen since. Based on his maiden win, 95 seems a very decent mark. However at 3/1 I won't be having a bet. Although Roger Charlton knows how to get them ready after a long lay off like Al Kazeem, we don't really know much else about the horse and recent efforts by Cityscape and Mince have been expensive to follow. Keep an eye on him today , will probably be winning later in the season.

  11. Re: Mr Dettori

And' date=' Paul Hanagan is 32. Hardly the new brigade.[/quote'] Punters have only noticed him in the last couple of years. In my opinion he'll be getting bigger rides in the bigger races from now. Going to Catterick instead of Royal Ascot will be a thing of the past now. I predict he'll get a few Gr1s over the next few years. Funny you mention Fallon, when he was the same age, Fallon was no where near being a top jockey, his only claim to fame at that age was that he pulled Stuart Webster off a horse during a race and got banned for half a year.
  12. Re: Mr Dettori Agree the Dettori / Balding interview was very contrived, a lot of what came out Frankie's mouth was made up in my opionion. As for not knowing all the facts. There's been a few books on Dettori and also he's been the most written about jockey for the past 2 decades. My opionion about him is based on what is already out in the public domain.

  13. Re: Mr Dettori I think he'll still be in high demand especially now he's more available. Jockeys tend to have longer careers than others in different sporting professions like football / boxing cycling etc.... Think he'll be around for a while despite saying he'd quit after 10 more years after his plane crash. Wouldn't surprise me if Coolmore are seriously considering having him onboard to replace Young Joseph. If when he does retire, I think we'll still see him on tv / see him in Hello magazine / Sun newspaper etc etc... He loves being in the spotlight, he loves showing off, he even presented Top of the Pops once!! Personally I lost respect for him after the way he handled his termination of his contract with Godolphin. Normal people who weren't happy about their jobs like he was with younger jockeys getting a sniff, would have just given in their notice in a polite manner. Not him.....he deliberately acted in a way that would pisss off his superiors by taking the ride on Camelot. He knew he'd get sacked after what happened with Scorpion. Very very unprofessional and shows what a disrespectful arse***e he is. Still a top jockey and it wouldn't put me off still backing him.

  14. Re: The Jockey Thread I was mightily impressed by the ride of James Mcdonald in the first race at Leicester today. Anybody know anything about the guy? He doesn't have a number after his name so I guess he's a proper jockey, is he from Ireland? I've never heard of him before.

  15. Re: The Jockey Thread Fabulous ride from top jockey Ryan Moore in the Derby, to me he's in the top 3 in the UK and Ireland, possibly the best at the moment. It wouldn't surprise me if he beomes the first choice for Coolmore on a permanent basis in the next 5 years.

  16. Re: Dawn Approach in the Derby

Bolger didn't want to run DA in the Derby, from day 1. Was taken out of his hands, Godolphin own 51% of the horse.
Sheikh Mohammed is a sporting owner. Over the years he has run many top horses beyond their proven distance. A big pat on the back I say, very unfortunate how it turned out though.
  17. Re: Dawn Approach in the Derby The Oaks was won by a daughter of New Approach and also Libertarian the Derby second was sire by New Approach too ,so I think it's too early to say Dawn Approach won't get the trip. As for the excuses, I think that's what they are. They want to draw a line through that race and pretend that it didn't happen. Rather than get beat fair and square, they elected to virtually pull the horse up and claim something was wrong. It makes more sense from a commercial point of view that the race can be forgotten for whatever reason they claim, be it the horse banged its head or it had the trots prior to the race. It's a commercial ploy to keep the stud fees high by saying it wasn't its true running. Coolmore did the same with the Richard Hughes horse which was beaten by Frankel in the Sussex Stakes last year or year before, Canford Cliffs I think it was.

  18. Re: 2013 Epsom Derby

I agree that complete no-hopers should be banished immediatly and that should be based on being within so many lbs of the top rated horse in the race or better still, having to reach a certain rating before being able to compete in a certain grade of race. This also stops unexposed AOBs turning up in all the trials and me wanting to 'lay' them before they turn out to be the best horse in the race by a country mile!! It would mean that horses had to trial in public as opposed to at home and the farce that many of the 'trials' have become would be addressed immediatly too.
I don't have a solution, but surely you can't prevent horses running who have not reached a certain level. Saeed Bin Suroor trained Lammtarra to win the Derby after one solitary run the year before when trained by A Scott. I think it was the year later that top jockey Michael Hills won the Derby on Shaamit having only won a maiden. Also we could have been denied the chance of seeing a woman jockey potentially winning the race, didn't David Nicholls and Gr 1 winning lady rider A Greaves have a horse called Portuguese Lil about 8 years ago? The less said about Noddies Way the better.
  19. Re: 3 Horseracing Thoughts Per Day Brian Ellison had yet another odds on shot turned over, this time 4/11 Royal Opera at Musselburgh owned by Kristin Strangeway, pro gambler. He was not there for that horse, prizemoney and price too short! He was there for Pelmanism with a series of duck eggs before its name. Seconds before the off it went from 12/1 to 9/1 and narrowly failed to win having to go wide. It ran in the colours of his Koo Racing Club, Royal Opera was the red herring.
