  1. I love the flat , I marginally prefer it to to the jumps. What meetings / horses / clashes etc are you most looking forward in the coming months ? Obviously Frankel is on everybodys list so try to leave him out unless you have to. I'll kick off with hoping to see S D Sousa making a sustained effort to try and the Jockey Championship , he's a top class jockey in the making and I anticipate a good run for my money at 4/1. One horse I have my eye on from a punting point of view is trained by L Cumani and called Petrol , unplaced twice as a 2YO , if he's still in training then I expect at least another poor performance possibly with a inexperienced / poor jockey before being trained properly and winning some races. Night meetings at Chester or Haydock in the middle of summer with an ice cold beer in one hand and a pair of binoculars in the other , can't wait.

  2. Re: Favourite Horse Ever.... One Flat, One Jumps - that is all!!

Only problem with the thread is that it is making me feel old!!! Not sure this'll be popular but for me Pat Eddery on the flat... When the money was down there was noone better to get the job done - doubt anyone will remember but also remember him winning a Royal Ascot handicap on Son Of Sharp Shot in 1995 - he won 6 in a row on it - always cheekily and was always a decent price!! 7/1, 13/2, 5/1, 4/1, 13/8 & 5/1... I know he didn't seem to ride out for a place as hard as he could on occasion but I'd generally back win only!
I had a good run that year with Son Of Sharp Shot , his Beesbrough win at Royal Ascot was a highlight for me. Have to agree with you about Pat Eddery , didn't see him in his prime but i recall he was Jackpot material never Placepot material , it was either win or unplaced. Celeric was a good one of his at around the same time.
  3. Re: Favourite Horse Ever.... One Flat, One Jumps - that is all!! Flat Lammtarra , trained as a 2YO by the promising Alex Scott who was murdered . He was then trained by S B Suroor , himself a first season trainer having taken over the Godolphin operation from H Abrahim . Won the Epsom Derby under W R Swinburn first time out !! , who was then replaced by Dettori who then won the King George and then Arc. S B Suroor was mocked by all the media especially Claude Duval saying the training was actually done by others like Jeremy Noseda and he was only an ex policeman and only a frontman. By the end of 1995 everyone took note of S B suroor who cleaned up in the Gr1 division. Lammtarra immediately retired to stud in Japan and was not a success producing only a few donkeys. Jumps One Man , trained by G Richards , in the Al Ferof colours of John Hales ,arguably one of the most popular grays of that era . A very good novice , went on to win the Henessy , 2 King George Chases , had 2 attempts at the Gold Cup but failed to stay the extra 2 furlongs , however came back the following year to win the Champion Chase !! A mistake by B Harding the following month led to his death at Aintree , this would be followed by the death of G Richards a few months later. Didn't make much from a punting perspective but they were a joy to follow.

  4. Re: Key Race: The Lincoln Handicap Sat 31st March - Doncaster

whatever happened to the spring double? never mentioned now is it? Lincoln and the Grand National, i remember a tipster who used to sell tips via letters (pre internet days), anyone remember his name? you would get them on a friday before the race, well he gave Right wing for the Lincoln and then the winner in the national, not sure the year, about 1999 ish i expect anyway i may have a sprng double bet for the sake of it!!!
As someone has menioned it was Gerald Swain. He tipped the Spring Double in 1997 , Kualia Lipsis and Lord Gylenne think first one was 11/1 and Lord Gylenne was 7/1 at the time , it was the year the Grang National was reschesuled to a Monday and the SP of Lord Gylenne was 14/1. Not sure if Gerald swain was a real person because I got similar style adverts from other tipsters on the same coloured paper over the next few years with the exact same method only different name on the heading , yet I didn't answer any advert. I got Right Wing years later but not sure if it was Gerald swain.
  5. Re: Synchronised ~ Would you run him in the National? If I owned the horse I would seriously consider a shot at the Grand National , as someone has pointed out Gold cup winners have a poor record , but that is only because of the lack of attempts. Who would pass on a shot of winning £500,000+ with a Gold Cup winner ? Before anybody points it out ,yes I know who JP McManus is.

  6. Re: Gambling Addiction and Me An increase in addicts is what the bookies want , especially after yesterdays budget where they are expected to lose some of that share to the government. I can see more " free offers/spins " etc by the bookies , its a relatively new demographic they hve tapped into and I can't see them holding back. Not very long ago horse racing was the main product in bookies followed by football , it was probably over 95% male and mostly over 30s ,then they allowed the old fashioned fruit machines which attracted the under 30s which has since evolved into the machines which we see today. They have even tapped into the female and retired market by having them numbers and bingo games , bookies have never had it so good.

  7. Re: Synchronised ~ Would you run him in the National?

Erhaab and Aidymac; I know you are not great fans of each other but can we just meet up behind the bike sheds and sort it all out instead of taking every opportunity to have a cheap shot at each other, you must be able to agree on something? You both contribute well to the discussions and i look forward to your views most of the time.
I have nothing against Aidymac , infact i like him because i get a "run for my money" when debates are concerned. More lengthy debates would make this forum more interesting for me and some others I would presume. My last comment was tongue in cheek , if you want me to put my bow tie on and disagree less , i can do that.
  8. Re: Gambling Addiction and Me Yes there were fruit machine addicts even when one armed bandits were the norm. Reducing the flashing lights / noise isn't going to solve the problem , they will still gamble. The bookies love them machines , it is a major part of their business , infact in some shops I believe FOBT turnover is greater than horseracing !! Without FOBTs some bookie shops cannot survive. All the big firms are peddling these machines like drug dealers. They offer " Free tournaments " , free demos , " Bet £10 get £5 machine credit " etc etc.. All they want is for you to have a taste of their heroin in the hope you get hooked. I don't play these machines but since their introduction only a few years ago I've seen many people ruin their lives on them. Shame on them greedy bookies , they pretend that they care about punters welfare by displaying them Gamcare leaflets when in reality they want you to do your wage pack in them machines more so than their other products. Horses / football / sportsbetting the chance of hitting it big is there however tiny it is but the FOBTs is a certain loser for punters.

  9. Re: Gambling Addiction and Me

Expected a lot better from this programme.very sad stories and something should be done about Fruit machines but nothing new on the programme' date='nothing to say to the addicts to help them or any new ideas to approach the problem.[/quote'] Agree . Think it was aimed at non gamblers , it made it easier for them to understand the problems of addicts.
  10. Re: Synchronised ~ Would you run him in the National?

I doubt Synchronised will get over the Gold Cup in time to run in the National. Didn't it take him longer than Jonjo hoped to get over the Lexus? I'm pretty sure they initially planned to give him another prep run for the Gold Cup but he wasn't ready in time. It will be near impossible to get Sycn 100% after a race as hard as the Gold Cup in only a month.
Why makes you say Synchronised won't get over the Gold Cup with a months rest ? Do you have inside information about the horse's physical wellbeing or his recovery time ? According to reports Jonjo is keen to race. There are steeplechasers who race the following day and its common to see them reappear within a week. Remember a few years back when Rough Quest who came second to Imperial Call , he went on to win the Grand National which was staged only 2 weeks later. If i recall correctly that year it took place in March !!
  11. Re: Synchronised ~ Would you run him in the National? Yes. He's not had many races this season. He may not race off this handicap mark again. It looks like a poor Gold Cup this year given the proximity of the beaten horses and therefore may not be top class so may struggle next year in Gr1's. The last Gold Cup winner I backed in this race was Master Oats back in the early 90s and he was only beaten about a dozen lengths , but surely would have been at least placed had the crooked Norman Williamson not deliberatey taken the favorite wide all the way , in effect doing 5 mile 4f.

  12. Re: Gambling Addiction and Me Been a gambling addict for over 30 years now and I've suffered a few consequences as a result of it . I can't see myself ever not being a gambler , I love it even though I end up in the mud most of the time. The best thing for me to do is to control myself which I do 90% of the time. Never been into drugs but my primary school friend has been an addict for 15 years and I understand his need for drugs , I'm fortunate my addiction has no health problems associated with it except for stress. My friend has ruined his life and wouldn't introduce anybody to drugs , me i am the same with my problem , i would never introduce anybody to gambling , if I go to the bookies or casino its always with other gamblers , I'd never take a non gambler. This is a reason why I don't post tips . I don't want to influence others to follow my judgement and then see them lose. I will debate about a horses chances or about the event after it has finished but thats only for chit chat purposes. I could write pages and pages but will just say , be truthful to yourself and keep in control.

  13. Re: Gambling Addiction and Me Anybody got a spare 90 minutes , I recommend watching a film called Owning Mahowny , available to watch on Letmewatchthis. About a gambler who's problems escalates into one of Canada's biggest fraud case's , based on true story. Let me know what you think if you watch it.

  14. AP McCoy has been champ 16 years on the trot , someday soon he'll have to relinquish the title either by retirement or by being beaten. Name the jockey you think who will next succeed AP. I'll go for Richard Johnson. Absolutely top class and would have been a multiple champion if AP was taken out of the equation. Or Jason Maguire if R Johnson retires before becoming champ R Walsh and BJ Gerrighty both top class but don't ride donkeys so that eliminates them plus Ruby is quite injury prone.

  15. Re: Did anyone back Kauto Star ?

There are a lot of people out there that bet with their hearts for sentimental reasons' date=' so yes i do think 50,000 bets were placed on Kauto.[/quote'] Online gamblers tend to be more hardcore rather than your casual recreational guy who likes a flutter , it is these punters who i cannot believe are responsible for the price crash in Kauto. This is the crux of my argument. Maybe I've got it completely wrong.
  16. Re: Did anyone back Kauto Star ? If I recall correctly Best Mate hardly ever raced once he won his 1st Gold Cup . The horse was probably never fully fit most of the time. So it came as no real shock that the horse had a heart attack when tackling the Haldon Gold Cup on his seasonal debut over a distance a few yards over the minimum trip.

  17. Re: Did anyone back Kauto Star ?

    Don't believe you.
What is there not to believe ? It was a seemingly weak King George after what we witnessed in the Betfair Chase , you either fancied Kauto to confirm the Betfair Chase form or you took the evens about Long Run. I chose the former. Do you believe Hill's took 50,000 bets on Kauto last week online and only 30,000 bets on Long Run ?
  18. Re: Did anyone back Kauto Star ?

He was pulled up after about 3 fences. The horse was clearly not right... I bet you thought he had no hope of winning the King George too' date=' as i said, a hindsight merchant. Didn't see you come on here and say he wouldn't win before the race.[/quote'] I'm not really debating about whether Kauto had a realistic chance or not just whether the bookies artificially had him at 3/1 when in my opinion there was not a lot of real money from hardcore racing gamblers. Do you think Ruby Walsh's instructions were to preserve the horse if there was no chance of winning ? Hence doing an " Istabraaq ". What do you mean by " The horse was clearly not right..." Paul Nicholls assured us he was 100% fit , so did Paul Nicholls lead punters down the wrong garden path ? Again.. Lastly , I did back Kauto in the King George , a chunky bet at 5/1 and 4/1.
  19. Re: Did anyone back Kauto Star ?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing Erhaab. If Kauto was 100% fit and brought his King George run to the table in the Gold Cup, i think he would have pissed in...
If he couldn't win aged 11 then what chance did he have aged 12 ? One calendar year is the equivalent to 3 horse years . Did anybody on here put a chunky bet on him ? Especially after the delayed news that he had a training accident . Anybody agree he was an artificially low price ? Any ante post liabilities will be negligible compared to what is taken on the day.
  20. According to Hill's online they took 50,000 bets on Kauto and 30,000 on Long Run . Personally I could not understand why he was 3/1 at the off. For me and a lot of my punting pals , Kauto could not win. So where did all this money come from to force it down to 3/1 ? In my opinion a lot of professional money would have been on Long Run with a little spread amongst the EW contenders. Do you think the Kauto was artificially shortened to get more mug money on , the professional opinion was that he would not win. I cannot see a lot of money for Kauto other than from casual small punters. It did occur to me before the race that they would do a " Istabraaq ".
