    1.50 Leicester: Class 2 Handicap, 1m
An open looking affair here at Leicester in the mud today, with most of these having no issue with this type of ground whatsoever. Least the favourite who looks well handicapped on old form and will be difficult to peg back should he enjoy an easy lead up on front. So Robert The Painter is certainly the one to beat, but a rather shortish price in this strong field...
Top of the weights Educate has been disappointing since finishing second in a Listed event back in May. He drops to a handy mark though. Question mark is whether he has the form to take advantage of it. Marcret in contrast certainly has been in good form lately and another good run is on the cards, he isn't all that well handicapped, on the other side.
Veteran Pintura finds the mile trip his limit stamina wise usually, but he'll enjoy the conditions today. He showed plenty when close runner-up at the Galway festival in an ultra competitive affair back in August and was a shade unlucky not to win at Ayr one month earlier. He'll be competitive if the sparkle is back.
Not harshly treated by the handicapper has been Jack's Revenge after a good runner-up effort at Chester recently. His poor strike is a concern, however. Athletic may find this trip a tick too far in soft ground conditions, but has place claims, at least.
Polar Forest is only 2lb above his last winning mark, although has found life difficult whenever he stepped up in class. He loves these conditions, so can't be ruled out, still. And the same goes for Spirit Of Law, how might prefer it a bit further generally, but will enjoy the slow conditions. Hard to know what to get from Storm Rock today, but he is still lightly raced, so may have more to offer.
Summary: You can't rule out any of the nine runners, although some have better credentials than others. I really like Robert The Painter but not his price tag. I take a chance on Pintura instead. He hasn't been in good form lately, but if he finds back some sparkle he can be dangerous. He'll be competitive off his current mark, given he finished a head beaten second at the Galway Festival. He's the overpriced runner in this field in my mind.

I missed the big prices for Dark Spirit but still feel the current odds represent some fair value in this field for a mare that likes the track, the ground and has won over this sort of trip in the past. Her record fresh is fine and the drop back into handicaps will suit.
She wasn't disgraced in much better races towards the end last year, however clearly found out for class there. She remains a progressive mare nonetheless and is on fair mark. The help of a decent 10lb claimer is a bonus though, given that the yard is going strongly in recent weeks too.

Fair points you make Richard, absolutely, and I agree with you in most what you say, without a doubt - but  in my mind you're talking about dedicated horse racing punters, not your general Saturday afternoon punter. I don't believe those are interested in speed ratings or any deep analysis at all. I'm pretty sure that would bore them to death as much as watching fashion and hats does. What they want is a simple bet, simple action, something they know about and can talk about. Is that Horse racing? No, probably not... not any more.
You and me, who love the sport, who are dedicated followers, we want to see that kind of deep analysis, new methods of looking at races - from our point of view as fans racing hasn't lost its appeal. For me personally it hasn't - otherwise I wouldn't be here in this forum. But you and me, we're are racing fans.
So the question is: is it the same for the casual viewer? The Saturday afternoon punter? The one who sympathises with the sport, but wouldn't die if it would be banned tomorrow? No, it isn't. And that is the crux. C4's coverage is intended to appeal to the casual Saturday afternoon punter. Not to you and me as racing die-hards. If we like it or not - this casual viewer makes the core audience for a TV channel like C4. They make money with advertising to a large proportion, so what they need are eyeballs.
Now, this audience though, in our modern, digitalised world, is so much more difficult to engage and to reach. Hundreds of TV channels on the box; multiple screens......, there are oh so many different things screaming for attention!
At the same time racing is competing against other sports - sport that wants your attention (and money) as well. The Premier League in particular of course. Switch on the TV on a Saturday afternoon: there is Premier League football, Italian, French, Spanish football, Rugby.... you name it. And then here is horse racing - competing with all these options, trying to get a chunk of your attention. And then there is C4, trying to attract a viewing audience, broadcasting a sport which has to compete that hard to stand out.
And the Saturday afternoon punter? Wants to brag about his 10fold acca on Monday morning in the office canteen. Not about losers on the nags. "How could Rooney miss that one?" Anyone can relate to it because most have seen it. In contrast, if you're lucky, one will slate Jamie Spencer for an overconfident ride on the odds-on favourite in the 4.45 at Newmarket. And this has nothing to do with Gok Wang (or whatever his name) talking about fashion before the Epsom Derby, or because Graham Cunningham comes up with another crude theory why this or that horse is the "real deal".
And the "modern punter"? Has nothing to with C4's coverage. The modern punter is sitting in front of his laptop, setting up a bot to trade on some Tennis match in the Arabic desert. That says, more data available, like sectional times - would it stop the trend? To an extend maybe, it may well attract some new punters having an interest in the sport. Those who are more analytical perhaps. But we are talking about a minority nonetheless, not millions of punters. And secondly: that this sort of data isn't widely available (like for example compare what details the general punter can get in Hong Kong) is hardly C4's fault. But again, it has a very limited impact on viewing figures. That's is my belief, at least.
It has to be said I'm talking about appeal the sport makes on TV, not in general as a whole. That's two pair of shoos.

Treve bids for a historic third Arc - yes, that's a third one..... on the bounce! But you probably know that already. Anyway; she's going to win? Possibly. The wonder mare is hard to oppose. Her form stands up to all scrutiny. She was utterly impressive in her prep. She has a fair draw. Only in-running trouble can spoil the party. Or the ground? Maybe. It's slightly quicker than ideal for her.
So, what to make of the race? Treve is going to win if all goes to plan. However every horse has only a certain chance by percentage after all and with the favourite over-bet, there is value elsewhere to find.
Tapestry: A super filly. Now four years old, she returned from an almost year long absence last month at the Curragh where she finished an excellent runner-up behind smart Ribbons in the Group 2 Blandford Stakes. She was beaten for speed but fought gamely. She'll be better over the 1m 4f Arc trip.
The Ballydoyle filly was second in last years Irish Oaks but made no mistakes when lowering the colours of supper filly Taghrooda in the Yorkshire Oaks. A long, hard season was telling, though, when she finished down the field in the 2014 Arc.
I expect her to improve big time for her comeback run, which in itself was a strong performance. But fitness wise she'll be better today, and she'll certainty enjoy the sound surface- the good draw is a bonus. Tapestry is a smart, genuine filly, not the likeliest winner, of course, but has plenty of good things on her side, so at 40/1 I have to say she is more likely to outrun her price tag than not.
Erupt: A three year old colt with strong course and distance form; he is the reigning champ of the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris..... and you get 25's? WOW! I guess he was an even bigger price earlier this week, nonetheless, this us huge, considering that this price tag is seemingly based on a poor showing in the Prix Niel.
Okay, he was easily beaten by New Bay that day, but the ground was very soft. It's a different scenario today. The good ground will surely make all the difference to Erupt's performance and with a perfect draw in 4 he's very likely to find himself in an excellent position when the field turns for home.
Once he hits top gear, he can be difficult to peg back. He may not have shown his absolute best yet, either. There is a possibility for him improving, again. That says I'm pretty confident to see him finish at least in the top five.
What else? Well, Golden Horn, of course! The Derby and Irish Champion Stakes winner is an intriguing contender. Personally I'm worried about the draw. He'll have to be extra special to overcome it and to beat Treve.
French Derby winner New Bay is touted to be the biggest danger for Treve. But is he? The fast ground is a clear question mark in my eyes. He has a super draw, though. I do look forward to see whether he can translate his excellent form and talent to this different surface. No excuses being drawn in five, that's for sure. But honestly, I wouldn't bet on it.
Summery: Treve will win. I want to see her doing it. Make history, love. I don't think the ground is too much of an inconvenience. She'll be fine. If she gets a clear passage, she's pulverizing this field. If not, well, then I hope quite selfishly, one of my two fancies can sneak in.
    Erupt @ 25/1 Betfred - 5pts Win
    Tapestry @ 40/1 Racebets - 5pts Win

Had the chance to go over to Cologne last weekend to the big racing weekend around the Group 1 'Preis Von Europa'. Two days of excellent racing, with the big Group 1 as the main act, but also some intriguing listed events and international starters, mainly from France. Cologne is a huge race track, with two old wooden stands, restaurants and betting halls, yet a lovely, cosy track. Not quite the newest standard, nonetheless with good facilities and full of charm. The track was rammed both days, with almost a 16.000 capacity crowd on Sunday.
The big race went to the tough filly Nightflower, ridden by Andrasch Starke. She was Oaks runner-up earlier this year but flew home on Sunday, beating fine opposition in Dubday, Ito and Sirius.

5.00 Listowel: Grade B Handicap Hurdle, 2m The ground has decimated the field and should be the deciding factor in the race. The favourite makes plenty of appeal as the bottom weight and may well have too much to offer, however is untested on really soft ground. So chance is taken on Misty Lady, a proven soft ground performer who has won over two miles in the past. Infact she absolutely loves the mud and also stays further. I can see her being positively ridden today to make it a really stiff test which should suit her best. She has won earlier this year off a 10lb lower mark. This form stacks up well and she run with credit of her current mark subsequently, although switched to the flat then , she hasn't shown any form in her last handful of starts. Back over hurdles, with conditions sure to suit, she is a big price against the favourite though. Misty Lady @ 14/1 William Hill

We're in for a cracking weekend of racing over here in Ireland with the much promised battle between Golden Horn and Gleneagles set to take place. The outer course at Leopardstwon which will be used for the Boomerang Mile, Matron Stakes and Champion Stakes was good to firm, good in places this morning and we had a scorcher here in Dublin today (just over 20 degrees :lol). The weather is likely to be similar tomorrow and Thursday so we'll have very quick ground going into Friday before the rain is expected to arrive. However it's not unusual for most of the rain to fall over the west and midlands leaving Dublin relatively dry so we can all remain confident of a clash between the two classic winners. Looking forward to getting stuck into the cards and attempting to pick some winners. Out of interest how is Irish Champions Weekend perceived in the UK? Will it come close to the hype around the St. Leger meeting at all?

It's positive to have a track finally in the north as it seems to be badly needed. That must be a positive move not only for bookies, but particularly for owners and trainers in the north. There are plenty of bad horses in training, and to have enough fixtures to cater for them is fine with me. No one has to bet on them. The problem with those races is the prize money, or the lack of it, which means those races are even less competitive than they could be as only a handful are going to try. But that's a different problem. Personally I'm a fan of the All-Weather. Nonetheless flat racing should be held on turf predominantly. All-Weather is a nice add-on to have, something different, for times when the weather permits racing on turf - for example in Ireland, Dundalk is blessing. That says the more diversity we have in terms of tracks, the better. Newcastle seems to be clearly different to what we already we have. I like that (1m straight). That's the strengths and beauty of British racing. However does this mean we need more AW fixtures? No, I don't think so. We have enough. Instead of diluting the fixture list, why not distribute those already existing AW fixtures fairly among the tracks? Yes, that may mean less fixtures for the Lingfields and Wolverhamptons than what they have now, but it would keep the balance of the fixture list. The more AW racing you introduce, the more it will take away the focus from turf. That's what I am concerned about, saying that as an AW fan.

8.00 Curragh: Handicap (60-100), 1m 2f With top weight Royal Navy Ship out, this race takes a different shape. Nonetheless it doesn't change much in terms of my initial feeling, that Bolger's grey colt Algonquin is overpriced. I would expect him to be ready and fit for his seasonal debut, and if he is he'll take all the beating in a mediocre field. Given that his Dundalk maiden win works out very strongly, he could be well handicapped with an opening mark off 87. That assumes he takes another step forward with the 10f trip very much to suit this extremely well bred colt. Main danger could be Pullman Brown who finished 2nd in a very competitive Handicap over course and distance recently. He's to overcome a rather hefty rise in the mark though. Finally a winner. Oceania Queen won that really well at 6/1 SP despite having in-running trouble yet again.

7.40 Ballinrobe: E.B.F. Fillies Handicap (60-90), 1m 5f You can easily rule out half of the field and bring it down to four runners who are likely to be in the shake-up. That says two fillies do appear to be well handicapped after their latest wins: Majenta and Oceania Queen. Majenta won a very competitive Handicap at the Curragh despite encountering all sorts of in-running trouble. She took advantage of a career lowest mark and done it in really impressive style. Only 4lb up for this success, she may have still more to offer. Though her overall record is a slight concern if you want to dip into the short price. I feel Oceania Queen is a better bet. She is much further down the ratings and the weights but appears to be a late bloomer. She ran well on the All-Weather in recent weeks but switched back to turf really took to the better ground which seems key to her. She had a very troubled passage at Fairyhouse the last time but was not to be denied once out in the clear a furlong out. The handicapper has put her up by 10lb, which could still be lenient as she looks a filly very much on the upward open to any sort of improvement. With a 5lb claimer on the back, she is well in here in my mind. Only slight concern is the additional furlong. ? Oceania Queen @ 7/2 Paddy Power

Tercentenary Stakes, 1m 2f Excellent renewal for this Group 3. Favourite Time Best is a very exciting colt. He won a good Handicap at York recently; couldn't done that in any better fashion. He's lovely bred and has all the right credentials to win this race. Only slight concern is the fast ground which he never encountered before. Main dangers should come from Peacock and the only filly in the race, Irish raider Bocca Baciata. The former one is a Paco Boy son and has improved nicely this year from a fine Kempton run on his seasonal debut, over a runner-up effort behind subsequent Derby winner Golden Horn, to an authoritative Listed race success at Newmarket when upped in trip last month. He stays 10f and acts on quick ground. Good chance. The Irish filly won a really good 10f race at Navan earlier this year, which is extremely strong form. She lacked the speed in the Irish 1.000 Guineas afterwards when dropped in trip, though. But she travelled really well that day and back up in trip must be taken seriously. Although it's never easy against the boys. Couple more could feature, like progressive Disegno or even Mustadeem, who may find this race more suitable than when second behind Peacock in a trappy affair. One shouldn't forget to mention the Dermot Weld's runner Don Camillo. Lightly raced and progressive on the All-Weather, he won a Dundalk maiden in great fashion and travelled all over older more experienced rivals in a Handicap off a mid-90 mark the next time. He was outstayed eventually but should have learned plenty. He was thought to be good enough to warrant an entry for the US Triple Crown series, though he didn't take it up eventually. Nonetheless quite well bred, by a Breeders Cup Classic winner, Don Camillo is likely to relish the fast conditions at Ascot. With further improvement to come, he's a very lively outsider in this field. Don Camillo @ 33/1 Stan James - 5pts Win ------------ Ribblesdale Stakes, 1m 4f Irish 1000 Guineas winner Pleascach is a warm favourite for this Fillies' Group 2. She steps up markedly in trip, though is expected to take to it without a problem. She won over 10f earlier this year and the Guineas was run as a real test of stamina, which suited her. She'll take plenty of beating if she runs to her official rating. Second favourite Pamona was a bit unlucky in a Listed event recently. But she doesn't strike me as a filly who wants much further than 10 furlongs. The same goes for progressive Curvy, who was able to beat a well fancied stable mate the last time. Aiden O'Brien's Wedding Vow has been a disappointing favourite in the Lingfield Oaks trial. She didn't get the run of the race there and seemed to lack focus in the closing stages. Blinkered for the first time she could be much sharper here. But she is still a maiden and her form is far from special. If you want to take on the top notch Bolger filly - and I am prepared to do that - you better don't underestimate John Gosden's charge Gretchen. Only a one time raced maiden winner to date, one should really watch her debut run at Newmarket, where she made a very big impression on me. She was green - naturally - slowly out of the gates too, but then settled well and made gradually progress. I liked the way she went through the gears travelling on the outside to increase the heat step by step. She was only pushed out, never saw the stick, but won a useful maiden in authoritative style in the end. This filly looks exceptional from a physical point of view and is equally bred to be a star; she is open to any amount of improvement. John Gosden must think allot of her to throw her in at the deep end here, but if she can overcome inexperience, she must be one who is able to give the favourite something to think about. Gretchen @ 11/1 Paddy Power - 5pts Win ------------ Britannia Stakes, 1 mile As always in these big Handicaps, the race may be decided where the pace is coming from. It's hard to break it down in this field I've to admit - it could go either way. Two horses stand out from a value perspective in this huge field: Certainly it's Mr. Halford's lightly raced Portage. I missed the 14's but still think 12/1 is rather big - as long as he gets a run; he'll be hard to beat by any horse here. I come to this rather bold conclusion because I believe this lad is extremely well handicapped. He earned glowing reports from his trainer after winning a Curragh maiden second time out towards the end of last season. It's pretty strong form but he was always sure to improve for the step up to 1m. He reappeared at the Curragh over 1m in a hot Handicap in May, taking on some older, experienced and seasoned horses. He travelled really well, made eye-catching progress but never got a run on the inside and was eased eventually. It's rare to see in Ireland, but here the Handicapper has been lenient. He dropped Portage by 2lb! Of course I might be wrong but to me this individual looks a good 10 to 15 pounds better and could easily turn out to be a Stakes performer. Second horse to highlight is another Godolphin charge: Emirates Airline. He absolutely demolished a 1m maiden field at Chelmsford on his seasonal debut and followed up at Newmarket in a good Handicap over 10f with a fine performance. He was very keen early on - that's why the hood is added this time - and was let lose by his jockey soon after the start. He just got outstayed in the dying strides. The drop in trip back to 1m will suit him I feel, so should the likely fast pace in this race. It should keep him settled and occupied throughout. I fancy him to outrun his big price tag. Portage @ 12/1 Coral - 5pts Win Emirates Airline @ 33/1 Coral - 5pts Win
