The Lennox Stakes is the feature race at 3.10 over 7f and the juveniles have their big event half an hour earlier in the Vintage Stakes over the same trip. Plenty of rain knocking about at Goodwood so the ground will be on the soft side of good at least. 2.00 : SkyBet First Race Special Stakes (Class 2 handicap) (1m1f192y) Trainer Mark Johnston has won this twice in the last three years and last years winner Sennockian Star is one of three entries for the trainer this time round. Stable jockey Joe Fanning is on Zand, an interesting runner having his first start in the yard and worth keeping an eye on. Forgotten Hero should go well under Jamie Spencer, he ran well at York last time and finished in front of a few of these and wont mind any cut in the ground. Selection: Forgotten Hero EW 16/1 Stan James 2.35 : Qatar Vintage Stakes (Group 2) (7f) Obviously in the past the Hannon yard has been a good starting point for the Vintage Stakes having won four of the last five renewals. I’m not sure their runner Palawan is up to this class and maybe this time we should concentrate on the two last time out winners Birchwood and Strong Challenge. Birchwood won the Superlative Stakes but gets a penalty for his trouble while Strong Challenge is a course winner and definitely on the upgrade. Selection: Strong Challenge 4/1 Skybet 3.10 : Qatar Lennox Stakes (Group 2) (7f) A decent renewal and last years runner-up Toormore will be a popular selection for the Hannon yard. Second in the Lockinge and fourth in the Queen Anne reads well in the context of this race and James Doyle takes over from Richard Hughes who rides Tupi instead. Of the 3yo’s Dutch Connection who won the Jersey Stakes ran a cracker in France last time and must go close if over those exertions while Limato is interesting over this trip for the first time. Selection: Toormore 9/4 Stan James 3.45 : Summer Stakes (Class 2 handicap) (1m6f) A tough looking handicap that will take some getting and only those with plenty of stamina will figure here. Notarised has won over C/D so is a decent yard stick and he went on to win the Old Newton Cup last time out at Haydock, he ticks plenty of boxes and will be hard to beat. Ajman Bridge will be fancied for the Cumani yard but needs to prove his stamina and I much prefer Oasis Fantasy who ran well here behind Quest For More and has more to offer and is an eye-catching booking for Richard Hughes. Selection: Oasis Fantasy EW 8/1 Paddy Power 4.10 : Weatherbys Private Banking Stakes (Class 2 handicap) (5f) A new race this year and a competitive sprint although I’m not sure the handicapper has got to grips with the top one Double Up as yet. He has won three times this season and was quite impressive last time at Ascot when beating Taajub. His Newmarket conqueror Humidor is feared as he has won here at Goodwood three times and will no doubt attempt to make all. Of the others Confessional is running well and will pop in at sometime during the season no doubt. Selection: Double Up 3/1 Stan James 4.55 : EBF Stallions Maiden Stakes (6f) A maiden race over 6f and a wide-open contest on paper. Goodwood Zodiac will attract plenty of supporters for his name if nothing else but he does have a squeak on his second at Epsom last time out. He’s owned by the Goodwood Owners Group so will have had this race in his sights. The Hannon team run a handful and jockey Richard Hughes has plumped for Papa Luigi so he should be the one to watch from that quintet. Sir Roger Moore ran well on his debut at York but disappointed last time in the Coventry but this is miles easier so worth putting in combinations. Selection: Goodwood Zodiac EW 11/2 BetVictor 5.30 : Turf Club Stakes (Class 3 handicap) (1m) A tricky handicap to finish off with and last years winning stable is represented by Strong Steps who was caught on the line at Kempton last time out. He’s been raised 6lbs for that which doesn’t help but he is a progressive type. Mark Johnston saddles Ifwecan who has been runner up the last twice and is not harshly treated on his best form while Richard Fahey who can do no wrong in handicaps just lately runs Third Time Lucky who looks sure to be prominent throughout. 3.15 Newton Abbot: Foxes Bridge 8/1 Bet365/Betfrd Won last time out at 33/1 but listening to the trainer and jockey it was not such a surprise to them and they did say he would be better with some cut in the ground. I reckon this is a weaker contest and he can go close off his revised mark.

310 Newmarket The Bunbury Cup is one of the most competitive handicaps of the season here at Newmarket. We have 20 runners declared and last years winner Heavens Guest is in the line up carrying two pounds more. Richard Fahey’s other runner Rene Mathis is interesting with Paul Hanagan in the saddle and he fits the profile of Fahey’s two winners of this race. Chill The Kite will have his supporters as will the veteran Field Of Dream who won this in 2013. Another one to consider is Bronze Angel who was a decent 7th in the Hunt Cup at Ascot and just behind him was the Luca Cumani horse Ayaar who has Frankie Dettori booked, he was well backed that day and will be looking for compensation now back at 7f. 310 Newmarket The Bunbury Cup is one of the most competitive handicaps of the season here at Newmarket. We have 20 runners declared and last years winner Heavens Guest is in the line up carrying two pounds more. Richard Fahey’s other runner Rene Mathis is interesting with Paul Hanagan in the saddle and he fits the profile of Fahey’s two winners of this race. Chill The Kite will have his supporters as will the veteran Field Of Dream who won this in 2013. Another one to consider is Bronze Angel who was a decent 7th in the Hunt Cup at Ascot and just behind him was the Luca Cumani horse Ayaar who has Frankie Dettori booked, he was well backed that day and will be looking for compensation now back at 7f. 2.50 Haydock Park The Old Newton Cup is a tough handicap to win and the trends will tell us you ideally need a 4yo carrying less than 9st trained by Luca Cumani. Well, step forward Penhill who fits all of that criteria. Won first time out for the yard at Ascot and then last time flopped when heavily backed at Newmarket after failing to settle. This big field should help and remains well handicapped. Of those higher up in the weights I like the Johnston horse Watersmeet and his other runner Notarised could go well at a big price.
