I backed Boola Bee and all looked lost with  the horse struggling a long way from home but the horse certainly stayed as you suggested.

Thanks, it sort of worked out exactly as I thought it might. Went out to 20/1 in running round the bottom bend, I thought I’d got it wrong at that point. Total novice at this really, normally don’t look at small fields like to back each way at longer odds. I looked at BHA website that morning to see there was an extra furlong to run than the stated distance, hadn’t realised it could go up that much. Anyway nice to get it right.

  2. Not exactly researched this great and wasn’t going to bother but the 3.30 at MR piqued my interest anyway going with the Boola Bee taking on the odds on fav and Net Love. Not sure but the extra distance over and above the stated distance (rails moved) and the weather forecast means I would want one that stays the distance on the going (my assessment at off time) and enough doubt about Black Anthem over that criteria and Net Love brought down and going I Think is enough of a negative. So 1pt win Only 6 runners other wise would be each way. Currently 7/1 with b365

  3. Just been looking Into today’s racing and noticed that the 3.30 at Market Rasen is down as 2m 7f and currently going described as good. Now apparently the distance is 3m 1f due to rail movements and looking at weather the going will change to Soft by 3.30 so how much would that change your selection for the race. Not one for me as less than 8 runners with a field of 6 currently and if I was a trainer would think another 1 or 2 my drop out.

I see he's entered at Wolves on Sunday in an all-aged handicap ....... he'll get a 7lb allowance relative to the older horses

But he is number 38 in the entries and only 12 can run so he'll need a lot of them to pull out if he's to get in the race

    I'll watch with interest !

One thing I did notice was that in his handicap runs he's always weakened at the end of the race .. maybe he's still a bit immature and will improve naturally as he grows into himself and strengthens up?

His 3 handicaps have seen him beaten 22L, 10L, 7L so he is getting closer ! .......

Can’t see him getting a run, he had two other entries this week and both were passed over. Never run on all weather surfaces yet. Will wait and see.

I see that Rebel Soldier Boy has only been put up 1lb for winning that class 6 maiden

I just don't think the handicapper will be putting a horse back up in the weights for not winning a class 6 maiden no matter how close he was to the winner ....... particularly a horse who's form in handicaps indicates that his mark is far too high already and really needs to keep falling until it reaches a level he can be competitive off

I think there's also a tendency not to put horses up for non-winning runs in maidens, novices and conditions races because they don't want to discourage trainers from entering them in those races

Thanks for your time and explanations be interesting following the development. I’m not convinced about him although I want to see him over 6f sometime, always being entered in 7f at the moment.

Just looking at the horse's form in the Racing Post the obvious factor is that the second maiden race was a Class 6 whereas the first one was a Class 5. In other words it was a worse race on paper so the handicapper would have expected the horse to finish closer to the front

He's been well beaten in handicaps off 82, 80, 77. Now he's on 72 and the direction of travel is downwards without showing much sign that he's capable of winning a handicap off this kind of mark

The handicapper wouldn't be putting him back up for getting beaten in a low grade maiden

I sort of understand that but he was 9l closer to the same horse Rebel Soldier Boy in both races racing on the same terms I think, so would the handicapper not look at that?

  7. Was going to ask the question in Racing Syndicates but perhaps more relevant here. My Friend Stan run in a handicap off 75 and was dropped 3lbs to 72 after finishing 7l 4th with a performance rating of 66. Next race was a maiden where again he finished 4th 10l behind Rebel Soldier Boy. Next race he finished 1l behind the same rival at Catterick in another maiden. Now I was expecting his handicap rating to go up on Tuesday but it was unchanged. Now I thought every race was analysed and ratings were adjusted the following week. So my question is are maidens excempt from this? If not why did his rating remain unchanged when he was 9l closer.

Well this sums up Racing and ownership and to a certain degree what this thread was all about in the first place.

I wouldn't have got to know the ins and outs about this horse and it has taught me a great deal. Its very sad that Last Golden Ticket will not race again but  its nice to know he's in good hands.

I'm sure I will venture into this again soon.

Very sad to read this, but it just goes to show how fragile these magnificent animals can be. It’s good on the other hand that owners group have Equiprep to care for these retired horses and then find them a suitable re homing so they can still have a good life after racing.

It is a good thread you started here and I’m sure you could find another horse either with Owners Group or other similar establishment, if you fancy doing so. I have 6 now and it’s hard not to like some of the others, but cost and the fact that injury never seems far away, not normally on the race course either reading the reports, helps me keep the number down.

  9. My Friend Stan ran a good race to finish 2nd, got 9 lengths closer than last week, but guess that means handicap mark will go up from 72 this week, does that mean he can’t take advantage unless he now gets a quick entry somewhere which probably won’t happen. Still like to see him in a proper 6f race. Does seem to lose it after the furlong to go pole, as most horses do who don’t win!!!

  10. My Friend Stan back over 7f tomorrow having not stayed the last twice (this one is easier apparently). Due to be dropped 3lb after his last run, but not for this one! Level weights maiden, others appear better in. Not sure who is learning what yet? Almost seems like a method of dropping down some weight but surely running too soon for that. Several horses could be anything in the race. Two with better form? Place at best I would think and not my money. Any improvement would be good to see. Doesn’t appear to be finishing his races yet.

  11. I would agree, broke from the stalls better and looked like jockey/horse was eager to get to the rail which might have been done a bit quick and then didn’t settle. Did look as though 7f would be his limit and 6f might be his distance in the future, might get dropped a bit with the distances which will help. Be interesting what is next. Trainer will be learning about him too. Should be about right next time I would have thought.

Bathtime For Rupert is so unlucky finishing second with over 80pts and Fader snuck on to the podium with a 4/1 winner on the last day.
11 players ended with over 50pts, a record for the competition.

Many thanks for your continued support, 104 entries was tremendous:clap

Firstly thank you to Billyhills for all the hard work running the competition. You are to blame for me even bothering to enter this competition. I was a bit of a gambler before joining this site. I like to think I have learnt from reading a lot of the various posts. I don’t do methods or ratings, I would not have the time or patience. There are so many really good people on here, read and analyse and anything is possible. I have really enjoyed this week before today!

1st winner was down to Cable Guy ( Owners Group horse I have a hair on - Billy your fault again) just joined Charlie Fellows this week, dropping in trip, had to have him. Now how did I pick a 150-1 winner! I just watched his first race back last night and thought he was a bit unlucky, got knocked about a bit by other horses, got tired possibly and given a good ride by the jockey, who was back on today. He was not meant to be 150-1, I think he was about 50-1 last night.

Apologies Rupert, I enjoy reading your posts and I have pinched a couple of winners off you this week along side those selected by Richard-Westwood who never fails to find value.

I suppose I will have to get ready for Goodwood now! I might even have to post myself now but be warned I’m no expert.

Once more thanks to everyone who took part and who contributes to this site.
