best bet of the day 28/7/09

4.35 Goodwood There looks to be an abundance of pace on the cards here with the majority of the field preferring to race from the front rather than the back of the field. Quai d'Orsay and Mantriverstocross may show plenty of early speed from the low stalls, whilst Sugar Ray and Cool Strike should ensure pace from the high numbers too. All in all, I think this is the type of race that will suit a horse coming from off the pace and thus I will nominate Camps Bay. Amanda Perrett's gelding is likely to be content to sit in the rear to mid-division and in Jim Crowley has a jockey capable of judging the pace before making his move. The 5 yo has competed in plenty of top class handicaps and is no stranger to the course either, finishing in the money on both occassions. His first run came over one and a quarter miles in June '07 and he stayed on well to take third. Two months later he was upped to one and a half miles and found only Sir Michael Stoute's classy Regal Flush two strong, finishing a three quarters of a length second. Last season he showed he had retained his ability when a decent second at Newmarket off 5 lb lower, and then at Haydock, off 1 lb higher, he was a fair third to Mad Rush in another valuable event. He has only had the one start this term, making his reappearance at Doncaster at the back end of May and he ran well enough, staying on over a slightly shorter trip before finding himself hampered inside the final furlong. He is a type that doesn't need running regularly to maintain his fitness and although the one negative against him is that he isn't proven over the trip, I think he is worth a go at it judging on some of his previous efforts. Win.
