Bath 31/5/09

3.10 Bath Siena Star has edged up the handicap slightly even in defeat but I think the veteran's consistency is his selling point in this average looking handicap. The gelding is a course and distance winner and has been in decent form of late, winning at Folkestone in April off 7 lb lower and then placing off 3 lb lower on his last couple of starts. He drops in grade from last time out though, and proven on fast ground, I'll take him to place. TBP @ 1.9 (Betfair) 3.40 Bath Auntie Mame is a bit of a course specialist and has has won twice here and gone close on several other occassions. He kept on last time out here over shorter to suggest this step up in trip will suit, indeed, he has run solid races over 11-12f previously. Up 3 lbs from last run but handicapped to go close on old form. TBP @ 1.49 (Betfair) 4.10 Bath Magic Rush has gone well for Liam Keniry in his last two starts and was only narrowly beaten at Brighton last time out, failing to see out 1m 2f and hinting this drop back in trip would suit. Has been raised in the handicap but made the frame off higher marks a couple of years ago so may still be handicapped to have a chance based on old form. Hinted at Kempton last month 7f wasn't enough of a stamina test, so chancing over a mile today. TBP @ 2.09 (Betfair)

Re: Bath 31/5/09 4.40 Tobago Bay 7/2 sj bog 10 pts An honest front runner who perhaps is better known as a hurdler now but who could still be dangerous on the flat as he proved to some extent lto with a narrow defeat which he nearly got in the stewards room. He is just a pure stayer who can go on quicker ground as well. I think the main angle here is that he could just be an improved horse after a really good hurdle campaign that included some wins and runs in good enough company. In the end he was an impressive enough 139 rated horse and if he could translate that ability to the flat then he could be dangerous. Lto he ran with great credit to only just go down with the front pair a nice bit clear and whilst he has risen in the handicap since then, he could defy such a rise.
