Best Bet Of The Day ~ Saturday 16th

Recommended Posts

540 Market Rasen : Thistle Had real problems choosing between this and Kirby's Vic later on but this one has been on my shortlist for a seller where as the other one paid up last time out. Thistle ran well in a claimer last time, up against horses rated over 110 and led to two out and plugged on. Nothing of that calibre here and should be good enough although Barati is a live danger in my book. A saver on the place should make it a bet to nothing at the prices quoted.

Re: Best Bet Of The Day ~ Saturday 16th Gull Wing 2.40 Newbury (EACH WAY) We have two very good horses at Group 1 level having to concede weight in this Group 3 race on ground that looks less than suitable. Sixties Icon won on soft back in 2006 but usually runs on firmer ground now and has been hit and miss, possibly due to a virus. Geordieland is good but doesn't always look good enough and may not like testing soft conditions either. Some of the others are average listed horses, Peppertree Lane likes cut in the ground and has place prospects but I'm going to take a chance on Gull Wing at 20-1. If they go off at a decent clip Spencer can sit off the pace and deliver it late, he often judges these races very well but gets a lot of criticism when he gets it wrong. It ran a good race in a 24k listed event at York on Heavy when only 1/2l behind Yellowstone, ridden patiently that day but Steven Drowne is no Jamie Spencer. Any overnight rain would be welcome and it can take advantage of this current bad weather. Jamie has won on the horse before on heavy ground and knows how to ride it. Trip will suit and conditions will be fine, only 4 year old and progressing the right way, hold up horse ridden by the best hold up jockey in the business.
