Horses For courses

Decided to stay up all night as i have to sign on at 10am:( Been having a wee look at the Ascot card and thought i'd share this that i blantantly stole from another site. Ascot SL5 7JX TEL: 01344 876876 Right handed. Flat course is stiff and a golloping track. Draw advantage: when going is good or faster, low numbers slightly favoured on the straight. Effect of the draw. The books say that the draw only becomes an issue these days, when the ground is riding on the soft side, in which case the high numbers have an advantage. On the round course, when the going rides soft, runners invariably tack over towards the outside rail down the side of the track, as that part of the course is partially covered by over hanging trees and the ground is definitely at its quickest, there. High numbers are said to be favoured in big fields on the round course. My own observations: At the last 4 or 5 day meeting, on fast ground, and on the straight course, every jockey wanted to be drawn low, and the vast majority of results proved that to be the case, until a fantastic run by NEW SEEKER from a high draw changed peoples views somewhat. I expect low numbers to have the edge on the straight course, but in the 30 runner race, I would also expect good runs from the horses drawn very high. In sprint races, previous C&D winners do very well. In big handicap races, favourites priced at 9/2+ do very well. Note Northern raiders who have run reasonably at Haydock in the recent past. In handicaps, if a horse is being well touted as favourite on the strength of a good top speed figure, it is worth opposing. ASCOT is a good course for the front runner, particularly in sprints. It is only when you get up to a distance of 2 miles, that the hold up horses fair the best. This course undulates but has easy turns and suits galloping horses GOODWOOD is a sharp right handed, undulating track with a long run in. Effect of the draw: High numbers are favoured on the round course, particularly over 7f and 1m, except in very wet conditions when jockeys tend to track over to the stands side. The sprint course is all downhill and one of the fastest sprint courses in the country. In smaller field sprints, low numbers tend to have the edge but in large field sprints (Stewards Cup) high numbers have a big advantage. In 18+ runner sprint races, look out for the top 2-3 drawn horses heading for the far rail. It is important that the well drawn horses are not slow away, and give away their advantage, because they then have to either sit and suffer on the rail and hope that a gap develops or they have to circle the field giving away masses of ground. The course turns back on itself, favouring jockeys who know their way round the course very well. It also favours Course and Distance Winners but not necessarily in sprints. Horses placed at Newmarket, quite often go on to win at Goodwood. Favourites have a good record in non handicap races. In handicap races, form doesn't tend to transfer to the track. Front runners do well at Goodwood up to a mile but from a 1m4f and upwards, hold up horses tend to do the best. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hamilton ML3 0DZ TEL:01698 283806 Right handed. Undulates and is longest course in the UK. Has a sharp finishing bend and last 1/2 mile uphill. Draw favours low numbers in sprints. PONTEFRACT: This course is a 2m2f oval left handed, galloping-undulating track with an uphill finish. Effect of the draw: Low numbers are best on good or faster ground, since being drawn high in fields of 12 or more, horses are either forced wide or have to use up early energy to get a good position. If they drop in behind, they risk traffic problems. Low numbers are not only best in sprints, but longer distances also. When the ground is soft/heavy, high numbers are favoured in sprints, as the horses then tend to come down the stands rail. In sprints, the best position is to lead or be prominent, because not many horses come through from the rear to win. In longer distance races, this changes to hold up horses who tend to do best. In fact the longer the distance, the more it suits hold up horses. The course favours C&D winners in longer races. Thirsk form translates well at Pontefract. In small field handicap races, C&D winners do really well. In Non Handicap races, form horses and favourites suffer a poor fate -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Redcar TS10 2BY TEL: 01642 484068 Left handed. stiffish bev I've never met her Gordon but her phone number is above. Give her a call ;) I'll try to add to the above in a bit. I always think of Goodwood and Kempton as being good for front runners. Wetherby being like Cheltenham and Wincanton fences being a piece of piss. Feel free to add folks to the track data-base.

Re: stiffish bev Good idea komp. How about adding helpful links about all things racing to the thread. Would be ideal for newcomers to have a look through. Will post some links later.
