The World matchplay starts on Thursday so I thought I'd get this thread up and running to get everyone's thoughts on this a few days before the off (could someone please make this a sticky?). I seem to remember Kev doing very well on this last year and with the absence of big names such as Woods, Mickelson, Furyk, Donald, Scott, Ogilvy and Garcia there may be plenty more chances to make a bit of money this year. The draw has been made for the first round but there aren't too many odds available just yet. For info however the draw is as follows: Full draw (seeded position in brackets): (1) Paul Casey (Eng) v (16) Jerry Kelly (US) (8) Retief Goosen (SA) v (9) Angel Cabrera (Arg) (5) Justin Rose (Eng) v (12) Hunter Mahan (US) (4) Rory Sabbatini (Arg) v (13) Soren Hansen (Den) (3) Padraig Harrington (Ire) v (14) Anders Hansen (Den) (6) Henrik Stenson (Swe) v (11) Woody Austin (US) (7) Niclas Fasth (Swe) v (10) Andres Romero (Arg) (2) Ernie Els (SA) v (15) Colin Montgomerie (Sco) My initial thoughts on the outrights are Romero (25/1) and maybe Woody Austin (50/1) offer a bit of value. Both have reasonable first round ties and are players I've liked the look of during the current season, especially Romero. Not sure about their matchplay credentials however, Austin got 2.5 points out of 5 in the recent President's Cup (losing the singles), and Romero didn't feature in that. In fact the Argentine doesn't seem to have played much golf at all recently. May just stick to backing these two in their first round games, as they look like being odds-against for them. Would be interested to hear others' thoughts on this event over the next few days.:ok

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October It's stuck my friend :ok. I didn't do too badly in this last year like you say mate. If memory serves, Shaun Micheel was always silly odds and I followed him every round including the 1st round against the Tiger :D. Hopefully we'll do nicely from it this time. Big fan of matchplay golf. Always want to be keeping Els and Cabrera on side around here. Els lives here and Cabrera loves it here. Both have superb records around here.

Cheers Kev. Another one to watch might be Anders Hansen who has two victories and a T4 in the PGA Champs (including this year) at Wentworth. He has Harrington in the first round though and doesn't seem to have played a lot of matchplay from what I can gather i.e. no Ryder Cup or Seve Trophy experience.

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October This event kicks off tomorrow so time to get some bets up. Weather looks set fair for the four days so hopefully we'll be treated to some great games. 5pts E/W J Rose @ 13/2 Stan James (1/2 odds 1,2) On the outrights have decided to go from one from each side of the draw. First up is Justin Rose who has had an impressive season in the US and Europe and is maturing into an excellent, all-round golfer. He's got recent course form with his playoff defeat here to Hansen earlier in the year and some decent matchplay form having reached the last 8 of the WGC Matchplay in February (defeating Mickelson en route). I think 13/2 looks a good price for what appears a slightly favourable draw. 2pts E/W A Romero @ 22/1 Paddy Power (1/2 odds 1,2) My other outright is more of a longshot and that is Andres Romero, yes he's in Ernie's quarter but one big result could see him make a fair bit of progress and I think this guy has got what it takes to compete with the very best. Big driver and a great putter so should enjoy the matchplay format, has been a bit of a birdie machine on tour, let down by double-bogeys on occasions so hopefully that won't have too much impact on his matchplay scoring. Just the one match that takes the fancy, have gone off Austin vs Stenson as Stenson (despite his very average form) won the WGC matchplay earlier in the year. 5pts A Hansen to beat P Harrington @ 6/4 (Boyles) As mentioned above Hansen has great course form and a win on the new course layout which ought to count for a lot against the Open Champion. Harrington's a fine matchplay golfer but hasn't played all that much golf since the Open with mixed results, so I'm tempted by the upset here. Certainly think Hansen is over-priced after his decent form this season.

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Absolutely with you on Rose and Hansen Cymro. Different outright in the bottom half though. 5pts ew J.Rose to win World Matchplay 13/2 Stan James Justin Rose is a really solid golfer now and is having a great year. He was T12 or better in all 4 of the year's majors, has had various high finishes on the PGA Tour this year and was also 2nd last week in the Dunhill Links so comes here in good form. He looked ok in the Seve Trophy and had a decent run to the quarter finals of the Accenture World Matchplay. He took Anders Hansen to a playoff here at Wentworth in the PGA and is in what looks a comfortable half of the draw with Paul Casey got in great nick. I'd expect a bold showing from the Englishman and 13/2 is well worth an ew punt. 1pt ew H.Stenson to win World Matchplay 18/1 Stan James Henrik Stenson doesn't come here in the best of form but there's no doubt he enjoys matchplay. He won the Accenture World Matchplay earlier in the year beating smoe of the best players in the world along the way and knows his way around Wentworth too. Stenson also won his singles match in the Ryder Cup last year beating Vaughan Taylor and he has a nice opener here. Ernie Els would be a tricky semi final opponent if both get there but at 18/1 I'm happy to take my chances. And 2 match bets for Thursday. 10pts A.Cabrera to beat R.Goosen 5/6 Bet365 Angel Cabrera has an excellent record around this course. He has a win and 3 other top 5's to his name in the PGA around here and a semi final and two quarter finals around here in this tournament. Retief Goosen is a solid player but he's not having the year we'd maybe expect from him. Paul Casey beat the Goose 6&4 here last year which won't have helped his confidence and I'm with the US Open champion on a course he enjoys. 10pts A.Hansen to beat P.Harrington 6/4 Boylesports Anders Hansen won the PGA here earlier in the year beating Justin Rose in a playoff and also won here in 2002 too in the same event. He also has a top 4 around here. Padraig Harrington doesn't enjoy it around here. In fact he missed the PGA around here for 2 years claiming it wasn't good for his game because he clearly doesn't like the course. That doesn't bode well here and you'd have to imagine if the Order of Merit title wasn't at stake, the Open champion might have taken the week off here. Course lover vs course despiser and I'm on the lover here.

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Mixed news today with Rose's departure from the tournament, Hansen's comfortable win and Romero having to come back tomorrow to finish off. Rose was a big disappointment today, caught the first few holes and the latter stages on the box and he gave himself plenty of chances but couldn't putt anything, he missed some from as close as 3-4 feet and never led at any point in the game. Annoying. With Romero/Fasth and Stenson/Austin having to finish off tomorrow the other outrights for Kev and myself are in the balance. It also means that there are only odds for two of the four games. Fancy one of them though and that is Cabrera to beat Casey, course form has already been mentioned for Cabrera but what appeals to me on this one is the way the two guys played today. Both had reasonably comfortable wins but Cabrera played much more consistent golf than the Englishmen summed up as follows: Casey: 34 holes 7 birdies 21 pars 4 bogeys 2 doubles Cabrera: 31 holes 11 birdies 19 pars 1 bogey Casey had to put away his driver and 3 wood at the end as he couldn't find a fairway. Cabrera also had the tougher match vs Goosen so would definitely have him favourite for this one. Paddy Power go Evens on the Argentine though which is a crazy price in my book. 10 pts Cabrera to beat Casey @ Evs (Paddy Power)

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Absolutely agree mate and I'm with you again! Cabrera done the business today for me so there's no reason to desert him. Think this top half is his for the taking now. 10pts A.Cabrera to beat P.Casey Evs Paddy Power Angel Cabrera was simply excellent on day 1 going round 31 holes with only one bogey and finishing 10 under par for the day and beating Retief Goosen very very comfortably. Paul Casey beat Jerry Kelly fairly easily enough but he went round in 1 over for the day and that won't beat Cabrera. Cabrera loves it around here. He has the length to hit the par 5's with ease and I think he'll take out the defending champion in this quarter final. 10pts S.Hansen to beat H.Mahan Evs Boylesports Soren Hansen took a while to get to grips with Rory Sabbatini in round 1 but once the 2nd round began his game started to really flow. He ended up 6 under for the day and played some superb golf particularly in the afternoon. Hunter Mahan had a good day too finishing 5 under in his demolition of Justin Rose but Rose only managed a level par day so he contributed to his own downfall somewhat. Hansen has a fair bit of experience around here and a couple of 2nds in decent events this year shows he's in good touch and although this looks like it could be a close match, I'll take the Dane to triumph.

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Level for the day after Soren Hansen barely showed up. Can't desert Cabrera at this stage. Am on Stenson at 9/1 effectively so no need to bet on that match. He was superb today though and I wouldn't rule an upset out there. 10pts A.Cabrera to beat H.Mahan 4/7 Boylesports Angel Cabrera has been in excellent form in this competition so far which was to be expected given how he loves the course and the matchplay format. He's currently 20 under par for his two matches which is slightly inaccurate given that putts are conceded but it's still a phenomenal record Cabrera has this week. Hunter Mahan played very well against Justin Rose but was pretty much gifted his match against Soren Hansen with the Dane having a shocking day at the office. He was 4 under for the day but winning 6&4 but only be 4 under sort of says it all really. Cabrera has the length required for this course and I expect him to send the American home in this semi final.

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Have to agree, Kev, with Cabrera. Expect him to take this one comfortably. Els v Stenson will almost certainly be a close one. I wouldn't mind being on the 9/1 Stenson which you are effectively are. What about a bit on Ernie to tie in some profit or is it not worth it? Cabrera / Stenson final will do nicely:hope

I'll leave it be mate. Stenson went round in 11 under par today for the 30 holes with only 1 bogey. He's the WGC Matchplay champion and he'll give Els a right old tussle. Els went round -5 today but the reason he won that match wasn't so much special golf from him, more like poor golf from Romero. He was +2 which in matchplay ain't good. Els had 5 bogeys on his card today so he's not playing error free golf. I quite like Stenson's chances there if I'm honest :ok

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Going to go against you for once Kev tomorrow. Think you have a great chance with Stenson, but am going to back Mahan vs Cabrera. The Californian has had two pretty comfortable games thus far and would appear to enjoy playing on this Wentworth course from what I've seen and heard. Cabrera has also had a good run to the semis but from watching his game earlier he got quite a few breaks e.g. long putts and chip ins which gave the match a slightly flattering score. I'd be surprised if this level of scoring continues and think that given Mahan's good all-round game, 13/8 is a big price in a two horse race. 5pts Mahan to beat Cabrera @ 13/8 (Ladbrokes)

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Cabrera wins but Stenson had a dodgy 2nd round to end his chances. I'm on Cabrera again for the final. 10pts A.Cabrera to beat E.Els 6/5 Betfred Angel Cabrera continued his amazing scoring in his semi final with Hunter Mahan on Saturday. Having been 10 under par for his 1st two matches, he went even better in the semi final by shooting 12 under par for the 2 rounds. Hunter Mahan believe it or not shot 8 under and lost 2&1. That's a phenomenal effort from Cabrera. As I said yesterday, the impressive thing is he's not putting many bogeys on his card. Only 1 in the semi final. In fact he's only made 5 bogeys all week which means his opponent is having to birdie holes to win them. Ernie Els came back well against Henrik Stenson and went round in 8 under par which was impressive but Ernie only really clicked into gear in the 2nd round of his semi. Before that he was getting given matches by his opponents. Cabrera won the US Open earlier this year and in the battle of the Wentworth lovers, the way he's playing this week, the Argentinian is a very good bet to take home the HSBC crown.

Re: HSBC World Matchplay Golf 11-14 October Unlucky with Cabrera earlier Kev, an awesome week from the big man which I hope has seen you in profit but he just couldn't squeeze out another couple of low rounds. Ernie just got his putting going when it mattered from yesterday afternoon onwards which made all the difference. I make it -1.5pts for myself over the tournament but I'm not too disappointed overall, all the picks gave themselves chances but missed too many putts which is matchplay I guess - definitely a few lessons learned for next time. Much prefer betting on this to strokeplay golf so can't wait for the next tournament to come around whenever that might be.
