Normally when you know a bit about one player and nothing about the other, you should steer clear of backing the one 'you have heard of'. But, Pashanski (11/8), is not a bad player and one of which I have heard about from somewhere and looking at his form he seems to be a decent player who has been performing well recently in challger events. I cannot remember where I have heard the name from, but I am sure it was for something good (sport program off T.V probably). On the other hand I hardly know much about Yen-Hsun Lu, and I think the only reason he a favourite is because he will have the backing of the home crowd as he is asian, playing in this, the China Open. Pashanski is ranked over 90 places above Yen-Hsun Lu, and should run out winner in this encounter. • Marin Cilic vs Rainer Schuettler

This is very much a veteran vs a newbie, and I am backing the youth to win through here. Cilic (8/11), made a name for himself when he played at Queens, defeating 2 grass court specialists Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tim Henman. He played really well and showed that he is a good talent who is one to watch for the future - so much so, people are backing him to be a future Wimbledon winner. Schuettler, has been very unimpressive this year and I am thinking it will be very near 1 of his last. He is 31 years old and very expierienced (12 years as a pro), but with a year record of 2-10, I think he is stuggling to play how he wants to on the main circuit. He qualified for the US Open, losing in 5 sets in the 1st round, but I am sure that he will stuggle to break Cilic's serve and will ultimatly lose the match. • Potito Starace vs Kristof Vliegen - DNB - I think that this game is too hard to call and both players have showed good signs this year. Starace got to the final in .... and is justifiably favourite, but I think that this won't be an easy match for him and he could get beaten by a hungry Vliegen who has emerged in recent months as a player to watch. For me it has to be a no bet.

• Fabrice Santoro vs Carlos Berlocq

Santoro (8/11) should have enough to beat a fairly poor Berlocq. Berlocq's last tournament was on clay and he lost to a player ranked 338 in the world :eek, so I am pretty sure he will face a much stiffer test against Santoro and will probably be beaten once again. As for Santoro, he has all the expieriece to dispose of this out of form player, the only thing which may stop him doing so is the transition from hard courts to clay courts, but if he does this well he will be looking likely to win.
