A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug)

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) In season 2007/08 we will trial having an individual thread for each of the 4 weekly A-League matches. Last season with the one thread it got pretty hectic since games are spread out over 3-4 days and people posting live score updates. If successful it will remain this way, if not we will revert back to the way we had it last year. :ok

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Prior to Queensland recruiting.. Their odds were $26, so were Newcastle's.. As for this game.. Draw looks to be on the cards... Both have great squads... Adelaide may have a little edge however played in front of a loud 25,000 + Crowd... Score draw 1-1, 2-2... GL 1X @ $1.61 - 2 Units..

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Queensland have the services of former AFL fitness guru Craig Starcevich. He was fitness coach at the Brisbane Lions and will certainly be good for the Roar in a fitness sense. Starcevich can benefit the Roar in a big way and it will only be a good thing for them. Queensland at home are a big chance this week.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Griffin tipped for Saturday start for Queensland Roar With the two-match suspension of Hyuk-Su Seo following his red card in the final match of the Pre-Season Cup, young Roar defender Ben Griffin is an almost certain starter for this Saturday night’s season opener at Suncorp Stadium. Having proved himself with an impressive string of strong and consistent performances in the final matches of season two, Griffin is confident that his extensive game time in the pre-season will benefit his first-team ambitions.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Preview: Queensland Roar v Adelaide United Date: Saturday August 25 Kick-off (local time): 7.00pm Venue: Suncorp Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 2 Radio coverage: Fresh FM 92.7FM (Adelaide) Head-to-head Six league meetings: Adelaide - 3 wins, Queensland - 1 win, 2 draws Previous meeting Adelaide 3 Queensland 2 (Hindmarsh Stadium, Pre-Season Cup playoffs, August 2007) Past five results Queensland: Draw - Draw - Win - Loss - Win Adelaide: Draw - Draw - Win - Win - Win Analysis Queensland Roar and Adelaide United only played one another three weeks ago in the Pre-Season Cup but both coaches will make key personnel changes for this season opener in Brisbane. Headlining the changes are former national team colleagues Craig Moore and Paul Agostino neither of who featured in that semi-final clash but seem certain to line-up for their respective Hyundai A-League debuts this weekend. Agostino, on the comeback trail from a broken foot sustained while training with former club 1860 Munich in Germany, might not quite be ready for 90 minutes but the 32-year-old looks set to be pressed into action from the start against Queensland. Under-23s striking duo Nathan Burns and Bruce Djite, who both started for the Qantas Olyroos against Iraq on Thursday morning (AEST), don't arrive back from international duty until Friday and will fly directly into Brisbane from Qatar. Limiting coach Aurelio Vidmar's options further is Dez Giraldi's latest injury setback. The 21-year-old came off in the first-half of last Friday's warm-up match against a South Australian select XI with a quad strain and misses the trip to Queensland. At least Agostino, the Reds marquee signing, scored on his club debut in that friendly game last week - coming through a 45-minute second-half cameo unscathed - while Kristian Sarkies is also likely to be available after a thigh problem. Moore is closer to match fitness after playing 45 minutes against the Central Coast two weeks ago and lasting 76 minutes in last Friday's warm-up game against the Solomon Islands. But Roar boss Frank Farina still has some defensive concerns with full-backs Andrew Packer (hamstring) and Hyuk-Su Seo (suspension) definitely absent and likely replacement Ben Griffin having missed the clash with the Solomons with flu. Teenage midfielder Mitch Nicholls is also suspended after his red card against the Mariners in the Pre-Season Cup third-place playoff while Robbie Kruse is yet to return from a facial injury. Queensland's regular weekly training schedule has also been upset by heavy rain in Brisbane this week.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) CURRENT ODDS QUEENSLAND ROAR $2-45 DRAW $3-30 ADELAIDE UNITED $2-60 (Centrebet) QUEENSLAND ROAR $2-40 DRAW $3-30 ADELAIDE UNITED $2-75 (Sportingbet) Queensland are great odds for mine with Moore and Tiatto in the side, plus the Roars plethora of striking options. Starcevich will have them fit and raring to go, and last season they were a very good side early, especially at home. Adelaide struggled away from home but were almost unbeatable at home. Have to favour the home team here.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Djite, Burns in doubt for Adelaide Adelaide United will assess the travelling durability of Bruce Djite and Nathan Burns before finalising its squad for the Reds' opening round clash against the Queensland Roar. The duo has been in Qatar with the Olyroos and won't arrive back in Australia until early Friday morning. Both players were given a solid work out during the Under-23's game against Iraq - Djite playing 90 minutes and Burns 75 minutes. United coach Aurelio Vidmar says it's a case of "wait and see" when it comes to the club's national players. "They have to endure a flight back to Australia and we'll just assess them," Vidmar said."Yes, they are a big part of our game but we have got a few players around (to cover them). We've got Jason Spagnuolo we've got Lucas Pantelis we've got Diego."If they (Djite and Burns) can give us something that'd be great but to be honest it is such a long flight I'm not banking on them." Adelaide's other Olyroo - former Victory player Kristian Sarkies - has recovered from a thigh injury but won't play against the Roar, despite a solid effort on the training track. "If he can give us another good week like he did this week then he's up for selection and Ago (Paul Agostino) has pulled up really well so he'll come up with us," he said. Vidmar said he was pleased with the team's build up to Round One but scoffed at suggestions his side was the frontrunner this season.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Rain dampens Roar's preparations Heavy rain has further affected Queensland Roar's preparations for Saturday night's season opener against Adelaide United with the club's final training session at Suncorp Stadium abandoned. The worst August rainfall in Brisbane since the 1880s has thrown Frank Farina's pre-match plans into chaos, forcing the coach and players to manage with a small corner of one pitch at their regular base at Richlands as the deluge continued through Friday morning's session. Farina said the incessant downpour wouldn't play a major role in deciding the outcome of this weekend's clash against the Pre-Season Cup champion. But a week of interruptions has hardly been the ideal environment for the club one poll this week suggested is the favourite to challenge for Hyundai A-League honours this year. Farina confirmed Brazilian signing Marcinho would take his place in the squad despite only arriving back in Brisbane on Thursday and shrugged off the injury concerns hovering over defenders Danny Tiatto and Josh McCloughan. The Queensland coach said Tiatto was as 'good as gold' after reports he had finished Thursday's training session early because of a quad problem while McCloughan (foot) is also expected to be included in an extended 17-man squad.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Adelaide face tough assignment in Queensland Adelaide United heads to Brisbane on a mission as it tackles Queensland Roar tonight in the opening round of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 Season. The Roar are yet to defeat United in their three games at Suncorp Stadium in the Hyundai A-League and The Reds will try to keep that record intact. United go into the game confident of a first up win after their Pre-Season Cup triumph but Coach Aurelio Vidmar knows the challenge the Roar will pose to his team. Vidmar has named a squad of 17 for the match, which includes strike pair Nathan Burns and Bruce Djite, who will fly into Brisbane to meet the team after returning from Iran on Olyroos (Australian U/23) duty. After a heavy training and travel schedule, Vidmar is wary of the duo’s workload. One player Vidmar knows will be keen to go is striker Paul Agostino who made a successful return from a foot injury. While Vidmar signalled that Agostino will not start the match, United’s marquee signing is excited about being part of the Hyundai A-League. At the defensive end, Adelaide United’s Michael Valkanis, who celebrates his birthday today, will be looking forward to leading The Reds onto the park for Round 1 of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 Season. Queensland Roar showed in the Pre-Season Cup that they will be a tough team to crack, and Vidmar knows they have the players to be a serious contender this season, which include the likes of Socceroo defender Craig Moore and former national player Danny Tiatto both back from overseas. With the performances that the new look Adelaide United squad has displayed in the lead up to the Hyundai A-League, there is an air of excitement and optimism for their opening match tonight.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) This one is quite hard, squads appear to be pretty equal, but if Adelaide leave out Djite and Burns, Queensland will be my bet, but until final teams are announced, I am very reluctant to commit to one side or another.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Queensland Roar vs Adelaide United Tough game tonight and really could go either way. Both sides have good pre season form with Adelaide winning the pre season cup over Perth, and Queensland winning its last pre season match 3-1 over Central Coast Mariners. Last season Adelaide struggled to win away from home, and they also found it hard to find the net when venturing interstate as well, their best form was saved for Hindmarsh Stadium. Queensland started last season off very well and I am thinking they will be the same this season under the fitness regime of former AFL star Craig Starcevich. Both sides have easily found the net in pre season comp with Adelaide having scored 10 goals in their last 4 games, while the Roar have scored 8 in their last four. These sides played each other on August 8th in Adelaide where the home sde had a 3-2 win, and Adelaide did not have have Paul Agostino and Queensland were missing Craig Moore. Tonight Moore is back in for the Roar, and combined with Danny Tiatto and a forward line that boasts plenty of goal scoring options I fancy the Roar to get up tonight. Oddly enough Queensland are yet to beat Adelaide at Suncorp Stadium which is not such a great record to have, but I think tonight they will be able to get the job done. There is also a big chance that this match will end up a draw as both sides are very capable, and If you have any doubts on the Roar win then the draw is paying $3-25 for a saver bet. Queensland Roar to WIN @ $2-55 (Centrebet)

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) I think i like Queensland here. Adelaide have a few gaps in their team now with the departures of stars such as Greg Owens, Ross Aloisi, Matthew Kemp, Carl Veart and Fernando Rech. However they have included Paul Agostino, Kristian Sarkies, and perhaps their biggest inclusion is Brazilian Cassio who will sure to be a livewire. Queensland have been active in the off season too with the inclusion of former Socceroo players Craig Moore and Danny Tiatto. These are big inclusions, plus Queensland have a Brazilian ace of their own in Marcinho who has the potential to be a superstar. I have to admit i favour Queensland slightly, but Adelaide cant be written off either and Queensland record against Adelaide is poor. I think the best option here is to take the draw at $3.30 and im sure it will be a fast paced and exciting clash. Pick DRAW at $3.30 - Centrebet

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) Brilliant strike by Nathan Burns from outside the box to give Adelaide an early lead. However its been against the run of play, Queensland lead possession 66% to 34% and have had several chances to score which they haven't taken. Wow, that Marcinho looks a decent player :loon

Re: A-League Round 1 - Queensland vs Adelaide (Sat 25th Aug) First 15 minutes has been all Queensland and not sure how they are behind to be honest. The Roar have hit the post once and missed 2 goals from onside the 6 yard box. Playing great football the home side and Adelaide are under the pump, yet they are ahead by one goal :loon
