The 1st ranking event of the season begins in the morning. The inaugural Shanghai Masters. Just in case anybody is wondering where O'Sullivan is, he pulled out citing a bad back. I'm going to have 2 outright bets. 2pts ew S.Maguire to win Shanghai Masters 16/1 Sporting Odds Stephen Maguire played some superb snooker in the World Championship last year and but for an amazing session of snooker from John Higgins may well be turning up in Shanghai this week as the World Champion. Instead it's Higgins who is doing that but Maguire should take lots of confidence from his showing in Sheffield. His game was in the doldrums after winning the UK Championship in 2004 but last year only 4 men scored more ranking points than Maguire and one of those isn't here this week. He looked like he was back to his best in Sheffield and should be challenging for silverware this season. He's in an open quarter which consists of Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy but there's no reason why Maguire can't beat those and at 16/1 he's definitely a value each way bet. 1pt ew A.Carter to win Shanghai Masters 25/1 Blue Square I've been waiting for Ali Carter to break through and win a tournament for a while but it hasn't happened yet. He's made semis and quarter finals but not yet made a final. In the World Championship though he played some superb snooker. His snooker in beating Andy Hicks 10-4 and Stephen Hendry 13-6 was some of the best I've seen in a while and if that Ali Carter comes to Shanghai he could well break his duck this week. He's got a lovely draw through to the semis with only really Ken Doherty a worryable danger in the way but Carter seems to be getting better and better slowly and I'll back him ew for small stakes.

Re: Snooker: Shanghai Masters Two for me and both in the the top half: Bingham @ 50/1. He was actually 80/1 this morning but I see has been clipped. He struggled to build on his good season two years ago when he was a real danger especially in these best of nine matches last year. However having beating Mcmanus in his qualifying game he may not have the toughest of draws. He plays Williams in round one and whilst he will be the underdog for that, Williams is terribly inconsistent these days and with no Ronnie the draw opens up and in a short format it would not be an unimaginable shock to see him beat Higgins, Cope or Selby in the quarters. He is also 8/1 to win his quarter. Also in the top half I like Carter @ 25/1 and also 4/1 to win his quarter. I tipped him on here before the Worlds and he played well all week before just going down to Selby in the final frame in the quarters. That run put him in the top 16 for another year and he showed that he is finally beginning to fulfill his potential. His draw sees him potentially up against some gritty characters on route like Doherty and Ebdon and whilst they are tricky games, they could have been worse in particular for a player like Carter who can handle the safety side of the game very well. I could see him having a good run this week.
