York racecourse damaged by fire

Fire engines from across Yorkshire were called to York racecourse on Wednesday after a fire in the £20m Ebor Stand. The blaze was reported just after 1900 BST in a hospitality suite and the area was evacuated without any injuries. "There is not much to see apart from a smoke-blackened window and the Fire Brigade who are here," said the track's head of marketing James Brennan. Officials hope to examine the damage on Thursday but do not think the weekend's two-day race meeting will be disrupted. It is understood five fire appliances and two aerial platforms were at the scene, attending the fire which was described as "quite substantial" and began at the rear of the stand on the third and fifth floors. "The Fire Brigade responded to the call and they are not actively fighting a fire, but they remain on scene as we speak," added Mr Brennan. "The most important thing is that everyone at the function evacuated in an orderly fashion, along with the staff, and everyone is accounted for so we do not believe there are any injuries."
