Straight Win or Each Way?

Being a very casual bettor on the racing, I always tend to do e/w due lack of confidence in my bets and minimising the loses. But I'm intrigued to other people's thoughts about whether each way is worth it? Looking around the threads, the majority of bets are straight wins - so which is more profitable? Or is it a case of doing each way to minimise the risk? If you mix - why? And do you have a set strategy for when you do e/w? Also, if you prefer each way bets, are each way bets more profitable than betting on a place (at betfair, for example)?
