Following the abandonment of Sandown, ITV are now showing eight races - four from Wincanton (hopefully as they inspect at 8AM tomorrow) and Newcastle. Here's my thoughts on a low staking day although I am particularly sweet on the chances of the Nigel Hawke runner in the 2.05.

Wincanton 1.30
Just the six go to post for this class 3 1M 7F 149 yard handicap chase. There’s no stand out bet here with the weights headed by Paul Nicholls’s Magic Saint who has been off for 206 days and usually needs a run. James Williams’s Fast Buck has fallen to a nice mark but hasn’t shown enough this season in three starts to consider today even in such a weak contest. It maybe worth taking a chance on the Robert Walford trained Prince Quali, who is a four time winner in his native France, thrice over hurdles and once over the larger obstacles. He left D Cottin to join the very capable Robert Walford and following a 602 absence re-appeared here in December over hurdles where he was easy to back in finishing fifth of 8, beaten 25 lengths over hurdles. Back over fences and in such a weak contest he’s worth a small investment.

PRINCE QUALI 1 point win @ 6/1 Unibet

Newcastle 1.40
This 2m 1F novices’ hurdle can go the way of the former Jim Goldie six year old gelding Two Auld Pals who is now in the hands of Lucinda Russell and ran a race full of promise on his hurdling debut at Bangor last month when only run out of it on the run in having taken a keen hold. The winner, Classic Lord is now rated 119 and that form should be good enough for him to open his account at the second time of asking with Carlisle winner Forged Well the danger in what amounts to a very winnable race.

TWO AULD PALS 2 points win @ 11/10 William Hill

Wincanton 2.05
A class 5 handicap hurdle run over just short of two miles. Harry Derham has his string in excellent shape currently winning with 8 of his last 16 runners but surely his favourite here Fourofakind is too short at around the 11/4 mark even with cheek pieces and tongue tie re-applied today. . He’s been pulled up and beaten 56 lengths on his two starts this season and is easily overlooked. The one to be on has to be the Nigel Hawke trained four year old Feach Amach who showed vastly improved form on her first NH start on soft ground when winning at Sedgefield in November by 2 1/4L and enters handicaps off of a handicap mark of 93 which looks lenient compared to her flat mark of 73 which was obtained when racing in Ireland for Jim Bolger and actually included a 4 1/4L 4th to the 117 rated dual Group 1 winner Warm Heart in a soft ground maiden at Leopardstown. As a four year old she receives a hefty 13lb allowance and could be chucked in here.

FEACH AMACH 2 points each way @ 4/1 William Hills 1/5th 1234

Newcastle 2.15
This 2M 4 1/2F novices’ hurdle looks extremely weak and should be going to Ben Pauling’s Handstands who looks a cut above today’s opposition. A 3L point to point winner at Moira in Ireland in October he was sold to join Pauling’s Cotswolds stables the following month for £135,000 and promptly impressed when winning at Hereford comfortably last month when a well backed second favourite. He’ll be unbackable at his price today but should score again en route to better things.

Wincanton 2.40
Just the seven have declared for this class 3 2M 4F handicap chase in which Venetia Williams’s Georges Saint comes here chasing a hat trick following soft/heavy ground wins at Ffos Las and Fakenham, rising some 12lb. Ned Fox, claiming 5lb takes the ride and he should be hard to beat. Paul Nicholl’s top weight Huelgoat has a disappointing run at Sandown to put behind him but can still run well and looks the selection’s chief rival.

GEORGES SAINT 1 point win @ 5/2

Newcastle 2.50
A winnable 2M 4F handicap chase may fall to Mark Walford’s six year old Empty Nest who sports a first time tongue tie today. He’s shown enough in two runs over fences, both in handicap chases to suggest a modest race such as this will be well within his grasp. He looked an unlucky loser last time when he had to be switched twice on the run in but flew home to get to within a neck of the first and second. Only a pound higher now he looks likely to go close under Jamie Hamilton.

EMPTY NEST 1 point win @ 5/2 bet365

Wincanton 3.15
Seven go to post for this class 3 handicap hurdle run over 2M 5 1/2F. Local handler Paul Nicholls has a terrific record here and rarely does a meeting go past when he doesn’t pick up a winner or two. Individualiste bolted up at Taunton a week ago, coming home 16L clear under today’s jockey Freddie Gingell in a conditional jockeys handicap hurdle. He’s only 4lb higher here but Gingell can claim an extra 2lb today so is effectively just 2lb higher for a 16L victory and shouldn’t be missed here. Handicap debutant from the still in form Venetia Williams stable Intimate looks the danger.

INDIVIDUALISTE 2 points win @ 15/8 William Hill

Newcastle 3.25
Jennie Candlish has gone 38 days and 20 runners since her last winner but can get back amongst the winners with her five year old handicap debutant Yealand who looks leniently treated off of a mark of just 96 in this 2M 4 1/2F class 5 handicap hurdle. He’s shown enough in three qualifying novice hurdles to suggest he has wins in him so Sean Quinlan can steer him home today.

YEALAND 1 point win @ 9/4 Betfred

Cork 1542

CATHEDRAL ROCKS

win

Gavin Cromwell has booked H.C.Swann claiming five and this  Fastnet  Rock sired runner looks the most likely winner in a race where the best of these  with experience does not look all that  strong.

It may be that cathedral rocks can go well clear here given the flat pedigree and whilst a win is the main bet and aim, a small wager too on the winning distance being five or more lengths is not entirely out of the question although you’d expect at the weights those with experience could keep up here.

😂 we cant stop laughing when we saw that T Carrolls 'Autumn Angel' ran again today @ 28/1 EW, so we had nice EW bet......AND WINS 🏆 at Southwell again......

last run 27 dec was 5/2f and sat in rear of field to finish 8th....22 dec was 4/1 and beaten on line by neck at Southwell!

ok all 3 rides were with Molly Gunn taking 7lbs off and is it 'coincidence' that wins when a  nice / huge price again, as it did for us in July @ 7/1 EW and Southwell again @8/1 EW in Feb last year.....

Shame its off @White Feather as like you I thought Ramses de Teille had one hell of a chance

WH refunded my stake and as Belargus was not listed on the final 3 day declaration (NR) I was very fortunate .

As for Coral I also had Ramses de Teille as a single bet but their Anti Post rules state "if meeting is abandoned " you lose your bet. So thank you WH and disappointing from Coral.

That shouldn't be the case @White Feather - I also backed with Coral and was refunded on the Monday so hope that you were too.
