“I Think He/She Will Get Further”

Can someone tell me why trainers regularly say “I think he/she will get further”?

if a horse is winning at say 1m why bother running it at 1m 2 or 1m 4?

is it purely for the challenge?

A couple of reasons ....sometimes connections have high hopes and might have a particular race they would love to run in i.e the derby etc ........or some horses aren't very quick ....they can win at a mile in lower grades but stepping up in distance can nullify the lack of speed and allow the horse to jump up in form allowing it to win in higher grade /higher prizes races ....you see it all the time .....
