Pricing up a race?

Hello all.

I have been reading the value betting book by Mark Coton and was interested in the ratings he does for each race and how he turns them into his own odds to then compare with the bookies.

I was wondering if anyone here prices up a race themselves and if so how? And also had it been profitable to you?
