Out of Handicap explanation

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Just hoping someone out there can explain something to me.

On the 30th May 2018 - there was a race at Cartmel @ 2.10.

On racingpost.com - there is a horse which is signified as being "Out-Of-Handicap" 20 - I'm not sure what this means.

The top horse in the race was Volcanic which had an official rating of 115 and ran with the top weight of 11st 12lb.  The horse in question Exit to Freedom had an OR of 89 - which would mean it should run at 10st - as did PerseId which had an OR of 89 also.

However, Exit to Freedom's jockey had a claiming weight of 7lbs - which would make the weight 9st 7lb - which is below the minimum... all this is shown on the results page on racing post (www.racingpost.com/results/9/cartmel/2018-05-30/701253).

But what I can't decipher is what it is actually saying.

- Did the horse run with 9st 7lbs OR SHOULD have ran with that BUT was actually carrying the minimum 10st as per the handicap rules?

- What does the 20 mean next to the out-of-handicaps indicator

- The same race on TimeForm - shows the horse ran carrying 8st 8lbs!!

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Hi mate

Exit To Freedom has an official BHA rating of 69 over hurdles and 75 over fences.

In the race in question the lowest weight to be carried is 10st which would mean racing off 89, hence 20lbs out of the handicap.

The horse would have ran off 10st minus the jockey allowance (9st7lbs)

2 starts further back he ran off 94! 23lbs out of the handicap.

Basically its a horse to teach the young amateur jockeys I think.

Hope this helps
