Rebels Cheetahs Rebels look a much different outfit than last season. There's only a few foundation players left and they got a new coach in the off season in Tony McGahan who served well as Munster forwards coach and then as head honcho. Really like the look of their backrow with Higginbotham and Fugallister but surprised to see them start the 19 year old McMahon at 7. Good to see the coach making a brave call early on creating competition for places though. Cheetahs play great stuff and had a wonderful season last year making it to the playoffs. They have had an auspicious start this term with a home loss against the Lions and a 15-9 win over the Bulls, who are not the force of old (although Matfield may still have what it takes). Don't see them repeating their heroics this season and they should have made more of the 2 home games starting before arriving in Melbourne. Cheetahs are battle hardened for this one but Rebels had a great pre-season beating Waratahs, Reds & Hurricanes. No match points from them games but there is a sense that they are on the up and I think they'll be up for this one. They'll have to contain Goosen & Le Roux but I do think they're worth a bet at just over evens. Rebels win @ 2.1

Re: 2014 Super XV Crusaders Stormers After the first two rounds it’s remarkable to see Crusaders only have one match point considering the chances they’ve had. In the first game against the Chiefs they missed 6 shots at goal by half time and let the champions away in the second. In the game against the Blues the 2^nd half performance was again a worry. Stormers barely got over the line last weekend and looked very poor really. They created nothing and it was sheer bloody mindedness that got them that last minute try. Minimal variation in point of attack and playing for 3 pointers for Catrakilis to slot. Hurricanes were unlucky especially considering the two neat tries they put away. If Lions can beat them by 24 and they only just won at home against the Canes, you would have to fear for their chances here. Crusaders have a 29 - 20 average score vs Stormers across all venues and a 78% win rate. When the Crusaders host the Stormers the average jumps to 32 – 18. I’m happy to back the Crusaders here as they can score tries and won’t butcher the opportunities as they did in the first two games. They have ground to make up now and I think this will be a damage limitation exercise for the Stormers who look very pedestrian in attack. Crusaders -10.5 @ 1.91

Re: 2014 Super XV Lions Blues Short preview this... Lions underrated in this matchup. They beat Cheetahs & Stormers and were two minutes away from a bonus point last week (yellow card late on cost them the ability to defend a drive off a lineout). Jantjies at fly half last week with Boshoff back at pivot here, do think there's points against the Blues for a sharpshooter like him. Blues did well to kick back from a big deficit last week but leaked some tries near the end to go down by 16 at Loftus. Don't think the team has found it's personality yet and Benji at full back will be exciting but would have me thinking that they're prone defensively (not just at 15) with an average of 30 pts conceded per match so far. All over the home handicap here and took the Lions to win the match early on at 2.63. Lions +3.5 @ 1.91

Re: 2014 Super XV Crusaders Hurricanes Neither side have set the world alight so far and Crusaders need to get their act together if they're to be in the hunt come end of June. Looks like Blackadder hasn't settled on his first choice 10-15 and Slade gets the 1st 5/8 nod for this one but Dagg's form at 15 is poor and Muliaina could win that individual battle. With Read's 100th game their tries could all come from up-the-jumper efforts. Only given with Hurricanes so far is their ability to excite with huge points totals in their games. Massive score posted against Cheetahs only to ship a lot of points against Otago, looks like they haven't got their defensive systems in order. One 1/5 wins so they'll be desperate for a result here. Normally I wouldn't trust the Canes against a quality side but I don't think Crusaders fall into that category yet. They haven't done anything to impress and coming off a bye might not be a good thing without form. Happy to back the Canes with a 9 pt headstart here. Hurricanes +9.5 @ 1.91

Re: 2014 Super XV The one thing I like about super rugby is you know the home team have a real advantage and especially when they play a team from another conference. This is shown by the home/away win record now of 29 home wins from 36 games so this makes betting a little easier especially with handicaps and when you can see a team that's struggling and a team that's performing. The sharks suffered their first loss last round to the bulls and I can't see the sharks losing a 2nd game in a row with the quality team they have and I think they will struggle to contain the likes of Bismarck and Jannie du Plessis, Tendai Mtawarira, Marcell Coetzee and Willem Alberts. The loss of falou for the waratahs is a major blow with falou having scored 8 tries in 4 games. The sharks have lost Patrick lambie but they were without him at the start of the season and they have a fine replacement in steyn who is more than capable. Sharks -5 @ 1.91

Re: 2014 Super XV The disjointed rebels looked to be off to a flyer in the first round but then the true team came out shortly afterwards and haven't looked like themselves since. The loss of Lachlan Mitchell further concerns me for the rebels. The brumbies have been given a boost with the return of wallabie Christian lealiffano who will start from the bench only because he's only had 60 mins of game time and his replacement has been doing a brilliant job! The brumbies won't have too far to travel and kurindrani also returns for the brumbies. Burgess, McMahon, Toby smith and fainga'a all out or dropped for the rebels. Woodward coming back into the team is the only positive is we for the rebels this week. Brumbies HT/FT Win @ 1.80 Brumbies -7.5 @ 1.91

Great tips Josh & good point. I was looking at the stats and home teams have covered 66.7% of the main handicaps up to end of round 6. Do think Sharks will win this one and the half backs know each other from Currie Cup so should be good. Folau huge loss indeed. Liking Brumbies too but I went for the greedy option and took 1-12 with Ladbrokes @ 2.88. Good luck with the bets mate :hope

Good pick spanky! Watched the first 30 minutes of that match and the hurricanes were all over the crusaders there.

Re: 2014 Super XV Brumbies Chiefs I had a pre season punt on the Waratahs to win the Australian conference because I thought the coaching of the Brumbies would suffer. Not so and they are the dark horses for the title I reckon. They’re playing smart rugby and have a very settled squad that was only 40 mins from being champions last year. Chiefs are losing a bit of their aura recently. I thought they did well to come back in those two draws but they were missed opportunities in hindsight and they have a really tough schedule. After the home loss to the Crusaders they go to Canberra now with a lot of air miles and missing the superb Cruden. Do think they have the talent to fill that spot but don’t think they’ll keep it as close as bookies suggest with Brumbies form and their motivation for this one. Brumbies -3 @ 1.91

Re: 2014 Super XV Blues Waratahs Blues have a lot of ground to make up to challenge for a finals place and on paper there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be there. Not sure about the management of the squad in the last while with the Benchy sideshow and lack of clarity on the playmaking responsibilities. Hickey doesn’t look too bad a player though and with Nonu outside him for this game they can put up a fair score on the boards. Tah’s looking great in Sydney but apart from the result at Stormers they’ve been lackluster away from home. They’ve got a great set piece and might have the edge in the pack for this one but I do think Blues are due a big performance and after a week’s rest they’ll deliver. +1.5 for any intra-conference game is a big number unless you’re the Lions, Cheetahs, Rebels etc., especially with the crazy amount of home wins this year. Don’t think the Blues are that bad and will take the home win here. Blues win @ 2.1

Re: 2014 Super XV Chiefs Lions Lions with 16.5 headstart is a good bet in my opinion. Chiefs have had a tough schedule, just got beat by Brumbies heavily, are missing their main playmaker and in poor enough form. Great record vs SA sides but Lions fresh off bye and should be more of a challenge than the bookies are giving them. I do have some concerns with Jantjies at fly half but rest of their team has played together most of the games. They’ve had a week to prepare and while normally I’d be giving the Chiefs the respect they deserve and staying away, they’ve changed 14/23 and 9 starters which can’t be good for continuity. Home handicaps are the way to go betting-wise this season but there’s too much of a discount on the Lions for me to pass up here. Here’s hoping for another 72-65 like in 2010. Lions +16.5 @ 1.9

Re: 2014 Super XV Bulls Stormers Taking the Bulls -5.5 early doors. Bulls just about made it home against the Cheetahs last week having come back from a fair deficit to eke out the win. This is their last game before the bye and I fancy them to be well up for it after a tough 6 weeks. Stormers shipped more injuries last week in their 1 point win over the Hurricanes. Very uncommon to see them get a 4 try bonus but I don’t think they’ll manage anything like that this time. The injury list is crazy now and despite Burger’s heroics I don’t think they have the form or talent left in the squad to get anything from this game. This is a derby of course and this matchup has been tight in the past but Stormers haven’t fared well in derbies so far this year, getting smashed by Cheetahs & Lions away and they haven’t beaten any away handicap in SA derbies since 2012. Bulls have all the motivation they need to do well here and I don’t see the Stormers offering much resistance. Bulls -5.5 @ 1.91 Not a lot else out this week to tempt but would have taken the Chiefs if the line was around -6.5 (now -8 in two way betting) and I feel the Rebels aren’t a bad shout at +2.5.
