Spennymoor at 3/5 away to Newton Ayecliffe, the 2013 vase winners at 2011 + 2012 Northern League winners should be too strong for Ayecliffe. Ashington offer real value at 7/2 despite being away to Scarbrough Athletic, they won 9-0 in the previous round and have been going well in the league. Finally Team Northumbria at 7/5 should have too much away at 2nd division Whitehaven who have suffered some heavy defeats already this season. Team North also defeated Whitley Bay in previous round. May play a few more although trying to find out team news etc which isnt easy!

I've doubled Folkestone Invicta at home to Molesey, with Mossley at home to Worksop Parramore - the double comes out at about 3.4. Folkestone have been underperforming but if they spark they should see off a Molesey side who've lost two of their three Combined Counties away matches. Mossley have had a rather depressing 0-2-2 start to the season in the Northern Prem 1 North, but are better than that and took leaders Curzon Ashton to the wire this week. Parramore are a lively side but have already conceded 12 in four Northern Counties East Prem games. Ryman 1 South side Eastbourne Town are bottom, have been fielding understrength sides and lost their manager this week. Having said that, I don't think they should be 3.3 for the visit of Corinthian FC, from the Kent/Southern Counties. It's a risk but Eastbourne have a greater chance than the price suggests. Finally, something wild: St Blazey at 7.0, away at Brislington. St Blazey have had a messy start to the season, missing a host of players (nine first-teamers last time out). It'll be a stronger side that turns out a Brislington, a Western League side that has started only moderately well. Nominally, they are a step higher than St Blazey, but I think there's something sporting in the price.

Skelmersdale United away at Drosylden (21/20 Marathon) It has been a tough opening for Skem and they might have done better in all their games - certainly deserving something out of their only defeat at Rushall. Droylsden's reshaped squad has looked well short of what is needed. They performed okay against Buxton but otherwise they have looked inexperienced and prone to blunders - in fact, just what you'd expect of a young squad largely thrown together in July. Chorley away at Frickley Athletic (Evs Marathon, Paddy Power) Frickley are not without their claims in this one, but the squad was pretty depleted at the moment - manager Karl Rose and two of his coaches were on the bench at Whitby. Gavin Allott is a threat to any team in the section, but they face a very decent Chorley that has only shown what they are capable of in flashes. Frickley concede too many for me - 11 in four - and Chorley have the firepower to see them off. Dulwich Hamlet at home to AFC Hornchurch (Marathon/Paddy Power) Unbeaten away, Hornchurch are a decent side, but they are some way behind Dulwich in the creativity stakes. In fact, I'd be inclined to pick holes in Hornchurch's record so far - they deservedly won at Margate in the opening week when the home side was slow out of the blocks, they thrashed a poor Cray and they bagged a rather fortunate point at Billericay. Dulwich are defending as well as anyone in the section (excepting Kingstonian) and they are creating chances from all forwards areas - I can't make them anything like Evs. Hitchin Town away at Truro City (4/3 Marathon) Hitchin's surprise start might not last but while the pitches have some zip in them their youthful and spirited attacking play should keep garnering points. Truro's two home shows have been a defeat to Bideford and a 2-2 draw with a last minute equaliser against a Bedford side who are no great shakes. Hitchin are staying overnight for this one and they are a decent price to win.

Reports suggested 4-0 flattered Hendon and given I saw them in their next game against Dulwich it was easy to see why that was the case as they looked a pretty poor side that night. Lewes are unbeaten so far this season having won three and drawn three and seem in pretty decent shape. If Lewes play like they have been then I like their chances against a Hendon side who are have a sluggish start to the season. BetVictor are best price of 11/10 about an away win. I have also backed Ships' two bets in the North and done Dulwich in a treble with AFC Telford and Alrtincham who should be too strong for Histon. Pays 4.7/1 with Victor

But I don't think it's worth not getting involved on principle. A good strategy is to do your own prices for the ties you like the look of and see how the numbers come out: there may well be a number or two that you think is more than 22% wrong!

The cup stuff was middling, too - both legs of the double failed, and St Blazey were thumped but at least Eastbourne T came good at 3.3. Still, a very decent month overall. No matter, moominspain - such is gambling. I once did a tot-up of my season's last-minute goals that either won or lost a bet, and though there were plenty of losers the winners outdid them by almost 3 to 1. I've been very lucky like that, and the better I get at this game, the luckier I get!
