Flat Racing - Thursday 18th October

2.00 Wolverhampton - 1pt win Berberana @ 11/1 (Bet365) There appears to be a good amount of pace likely in this race and although Jeremy Gask's runner may well join the leaders she's a filly who wants a good test at this 5f trip I fancy and that's why her recent run at Goodwood can be forgiven. She wasn't totally disgraced but I don't think she'd act best downhill and also most of those in front of her raced on a different part of the track. She's well-handicapped and is 1-2 on the all-weather, for all the win came on the fibresand at Southwell. Her other run on the artificial surface came after a break so that can be excused also. Prior to the run at Goodwood she was only beaten 3/4l at Sandown after some solid staying-on efforts in half-decent races. Her mark has dropped down nicely to a very workable 68 and Jeremy Gask had had a 1st, 2nd and 3rd within his last five runners. Not badly drawn in stall 6 and if getting a decent ride from a relatively unknown jockey (to me) then I can see her going very well.

Sasheen 3.30 Wolverhampton. 0.5 points each way. Jamie Spencer the ideal booking, as with a poor draw and needing to be held up, he should be able to sit in behind off a decent pace. The trip and surface aren't problems and a mark of 53 suggests she can go close if running to her true ability. Big price in respect of what 'could' happen if the race pans out well enough. 20/1 Bet365 (bog)

Re: Flat Racing - Thursday 18th October 9.00 Kempton Clutching at straws is a phrase that comes to mind with Kashgar, although he is bred to be a stayer this could be a step to far. He certainly hasn’t looked in need of further on recent efforts and is turned out quickly again after a reasonable 2nd over 4f short at Wolves. Glaisdale is an interesting handicap debutant today who ran a good race last time out although failing to do anything fast so this step up in trip is certainly interesting and yard continue in good form although wide draw slightly unhelpful but has been help up on recent starts. Red Mystique looks incredibly short considering he has been off the track for 2 months since slipping up last time out so clearly needs to show that has damaged him mentally and also failed to shine when first tried at this trip prior to that and stamina a massive concern. Zarosa has reasonable form figures behind her recently but that form has a very weak look to it, latest a maiden handicap and prior to that an even worse handicap at Yarmouth over shorter and needs to find improvement from 2 months off to be landing a heavy blow in this. Maccabees is a renowned monkey, can often be very keen and a bit wayward but did finally come good last time out at Brighton in desperate conditions having tumbled in the weights, on form he would have a good chance again following up escaping a penalty and currently 7lb ahead of handicapper but his profile is risky to say the least and fear is attitude will get in the way despite how well he could be treated. Also steps back up in trip having failed to see a similar trip out at Folkestone when far too keen for own good! Smart Affair carries an almost identical profile as Maccabee but her problem often comes at the stalls showing a reluctance to jump off at times and can often get behind, but she is currently in good heart at present winning last time out in first time blinkers at Southwell when stepping up again in trip, she steps up again in trip but on that evidence she should stay this far and aslong as headgear has similar effect she should go close despite her best form so far coming on fibresand she has plenty of form on polytrack to give her a sound shout in a race lacking much depth for a yard that continues in rich vein of form. 2pt win Smart Affair 11/2 coral 1pt win Glaisdale 12/1 coral

Re: Flat Racing - Thursday 18th October 8.00 Kempton - 2pts win Shestheman @ 9/2 (Bet365) Quite a competitive race but this filly brings some solid form to the table and David Lanigan's horses are in flying form at the minute. She suffered from being held up off a steady pace here last time so a more genuine gallop would see her go better this evening. Prior to that run she finished well at Wolverhampton over the extended 9f (drawn wide) and looks sure to enjoy a decent gallop over 1m4f as potentially her optimum conditions. She goes especially well on the all-weather and is well drawn in stall 1 here.

Re: Flat Racing - Thursday 18th October 8.30 Kempton - 3pts win Castilo De Diablo @ 3/1 (Sportingbet) David Simcock's runner takes a marked step down in grade having competed in one of the hottest 3yo handicaps of the season at Ascot last time. He wasn't disgraced in midfield but it was a messy affair and he didn't get a brilliant run through having been last turning in. He wouldn't have got involved but definitely a bit closer and was asked lots to do by Cathy Gannon. As mentioned, this is a fair bit easier and the form of his maiden win is rock solid through the runner-up. Teofilo's have a great strike rate on the all-weather and this one shaped well on polytrack on debut. Should take advantage of this ease in class with Jamie Spencer up.
