Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July

The second full ranking event of the season kicks off on Monday with the action moving to Australia for the second staging of the Australia Goldfields Open. A lot of the top names are giving this week a miss which gives the draw a real open look and means anything could happen :lol. It's all covered on the bookmaker live streaming consoles as well as Eurosport and both tables in use are televised so we don't need to miss a match which is a help. Stuart Bingham is the defending champion this week. Draw and format is here: http://www.worldsnooker.com/staticFiles/46/b5/0,,13165~177478,00.pdf

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Tournament preview: 1pt ew S.Lee to win Australian Goldfields Open 18/1 Skybet (1/2 1-2)

I’m happy to take Stephen Lee this week. Stephen Lee was the form man at the end of last season and got over the line in the PTC Finals to win this first tournament in a while. He then made the final of the World Open to show that was no fluke. Already this season he has reached the final of the Asian PTC. 1pt ew K.Doherty to win Australian Goldfields Open 100/1 BetVictor (1/2 1-2) I like the look of last year’s semi finalist Ken Doherty. Doherty looked good in patches in the Wuxi Classic until he lost to eventual runner up Stuart Bingham. He only lost that in a deciding frame though having previously knocked in a couple of centuries that week. Deciding frames have been costly to Doherty who lost in another one to Mark Selby in the Six Red World Championship last week having beaten Williams and Ebdon earlier in the week. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July With no quarter betting available this week these two are the only outright bets I'm taking. Just a slight difference between my preview and my actual bet in that I've had 1.5pts ew on Stephen Lee at the 18/1 with Skybet rather than just the straight point :ok.

Tournament preview: 1pt ew S.Lee to win Australian Goldfields Open 18/1 Skybet (1/2 1-2)

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Monday early first round match previews: 4pts D.Dale to beat T.Ford 9/10 Boylesports

I like Dale here I must admit. Granted he’s never the most foolproof against the top players but he generally beats those of a similar level and he knows his way around a snooker table well enough to take care of Ford in this match. Full preview here:

http://www.punterslounge.com/dale-vs-ford-betting--dominic-dale-should-have-too-much-of-an-all-round-game-for-tom-ford-in-australia 4pts M.Stevens (-1.5 frames) to beat L.Wenbo Evs Boylesports

Stevens really found his form at the end of last season and if he can pick up where he left off then he should have too much for Wenbo who still pushes the boat out way too often for my liking and still lacks a little bit of table craft. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Later matches: 4pts A.Higginson to beat R.Day 9/10 Boylesports

This is only Day’s third match of the year having lost in the qualifiers of the Wuxi Classic and that could be a key point here. Higginson also lost in the qualifiers for the Wuxi Classic but he played in the Six Red World Championship last week so has plenty of match practice under his belt and I would expect him to win this one. Full preview here:

I think sharpness will be an issue here. Lee has the form and the confidence to take on all comers at the minute but those who might take a frame or two to really get going could be on the wrong end of a bit of a hiding if Lee gets off to a flyer. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July And Monday's final session matches: 4pts N.Robertson (-2.5 frames) to beat N.Bond Evs Blue Square

I think Neil Robertson will win this one. He has made sure he is fully prepared for the tournament and will want to ensure a repeat of his defeat to Dominic Dale doesn’t happen here in front of his own fans. Nigel Bond won’t have played for a while and the conditions will be a lot more alien to him than they will be to Neil Robertson. Full preview here:

I think we have to consider Ricky Walden as a top player now. He was a semi finalist in the UK Championship last season and has already won the Wuxi Classic and made the semi finals of the Six Reds this season. Jamie Cope can pot a lot of balls but the problem for him here is Walden is scoring so well, perhaps not in centuries but with breaks high enough to win frames, to really punish him. Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July 4pts J.Perry vs M.Fu - Over 7.5 frames 4/5 Paddy Power

I can’t see any way that this won’t be a close match. Neither score devastatingly that they are going to run away with the match in an hour. Both dig in and take what is on offer and look to keep things tight so I don’t see this match ending any easier than 5-3 either way. Full preview here:

If Marcus Campbell doesn’t find his best snooker then I think he will be beaten quite heavily. In the end even if he does find his best snooker then Murphy is still likely to be too good but even though he got to the semi final of the Wuxi Classic if Campbell plays like that I expect him to be seen off with ease here. Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Next set of matches previews: 4pts C.Yupeng (+1.5 frames) to beat A.Carter 6/5 Bet365

Ali Carter is probably a rightful favourite for this match but he isn’t the best traveller with his Crohn’s Disease and that would give Cao something to think about in this one. We know the Chinese player has the quality to perform on the big stage and I think he’ll go well in this match with the heavier conditions better for him than Carter. Full preview here:

You would have to say Lisowski, as talented as he is, will have his work cut out here. Mark Davis is in good form and as long as tiredness doesn’t hit Davis before this match then you would expect him to have a bit too much for Lisowski. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July And the final session previews: 4pts P.Ebdon to beat M.Holt 8/11 Stan James

Michael Holt qualified for the Wuxi Classic but he lost in the wildcard round which doesn’t bode well for him here. Admittedly the circumstances in those wildcard round matches are all wrong and tough on the professional but even so he is going to face a tougher opponent here. Ebdon isn’t playing lights out snooker but he knows how to tie opponents up and with Holt having a tendency to be frustrated easily I think Ebdon has enough to win this. Full preview here:

http://www.punterslounge.com/ebdon-vs-holt-betting--peter-ebdon-can-frustrate-michael-holt-into-submission-in-australia 4pts S.Bingham (-1.5 frames) to beat M.Selt 4/6 Coral

I think Stuart Bingham will be too good for Selt here. One of the features of Bingham’s game at the minute is how heavily he is scoring. He rattled in breaks of 143 and 147 in the Wuxi Classic and you only do that if you are cueing well and hitting the middle of the white. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Early Wednesday previews: 4pts A.McManus (+2.5 frames) to beat D.Junhui 4/5 Betfred

Ding is a player who is easily frustrated and I think McManus has the style and the temperament to frustrate the life out of Ding. McManus will keep things tight and take what is on offer and look to tie the Chinese star up at all times. Full preview here:

I think Xiao has every chance here. Hawkins is rarely absolutely perfect in the safety department and if you leave Xiao in and it is a going day you won’t see the table again in that frame. Xiao’s a good potter from distance and shorter range and he will put a lot of pressure on the Hawkins safety game. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Remaining first round previews: 4pts M.Selby (-2.5 frames) to beat J.Burnett 6/5 Boylesports

I would expect Mark Selby to come through here and come through relatively unscathed. Burnett is a relatively good player in his own right but that win over Robertson aside he doesn’t match up to the elite players too well. Selby is such a good tactical player and a really heavy scorer that I don’t see Burnett getting too much of a look in here. Full preview here:

Shaun Murphy tweeted on Monday that Ken Doherty was hitting the ball really well in an exhibition the two did earlier that day and that fills me with the confidence to take the Dubliner here. Given Gould’s poor recent form I liked ‘Crafty Ken’ in this one anyway but with Murphy’s endorsement I like the Irishman a lot more here now and at 6/4 he has to be the bet in this one given how out of form Gould currently is. Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Wednesday's second round previews: 3pts T.Ford to beat S.Murphy 2/1 Bet365

Shaun Murphy may not have this all his own way. He’ll have benefitted from getting over the line against Campbell but that’s all he’ll have taken out of that match and if he gives Ford the chances he gave Campbell he could come a cropper. Tom Ford scored well in his opening match against Dale, knocking in a 60 and a 94 and if he does that here then he can easily take care of the Six Red runner up. Full preview here:

Jamie Cope is very much a potter but Stephen Lee can tie up any player with his safety game and then when he gets in he can still pile up the points as he showed against McLeod. I just think Lee will prove too good here and win with something to spare. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Thursday early match previews: 4pts J.Burnett to beat M.Fu 11/10 Blue Square

Burnett’s win over Robertson could have been described as a bit of a fluke but he stopped any questions of a fluke with his win over Selby and showed that his form is real, it is genuine and he will be hard to beat here. Marco Fu came through against Joe Perry but I think he’ll need to play better in this match to win. Full preview here:

Stevens beat Hawkins in the World Championship last season and he beat him in the Welsh Open too so Hawkins appears to be a good opponent for the Welshman. I like the way Stevens is playing at the minute and I feel with all the extra tournaments there are now he is benefitting greatly and is back to the quality of snooker he played 10 years ago. Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Next set of match previews: 4pts R.Day (-1.5 frames) to beat M.Selt Evs Ladbrokes

Even allowing for the fact that Matthew Selt might come on a bit I think Day will have too much for him. Ryan Day is a very good player when he has a bit of confidence behind him and he doesn’t let chances to boost his ranking go by without taking a lot of them. Full preview here:

I would just about expect Ding to come through this but not without a few scares and certainly not any easier than 5-3. Should Ebdon win I expect him to win no easier than 5-3 either so I’m happy to take the over 7.5 frames here. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Final previews for Thursday: 3pts C.Yupeng to beat M.Gould 6/4 Coral

Cao Yupeng is playing well and if he can repeat how he played both in the World Championship and against Carter in the first round here then I think he will have every chance in this match. Full preview here:

http://www.punterslounge.com/gould-vs-yupeng-betting--cao-yupeng-can-continue-his-good-form-in-australia-and-make-his-first-quarter-final 4pts M.Davis (+1.5 frames) to beat N.Robertson 11/10 Bet365

Davis is playing some of the best snooker he has played in his career at the minute and must be sky high with his confidence. I wouldn’t rule out Davis winning this match, especially if he gets Robertson under pressure in a tournament which means a lot to him but I’m more confident he can win at least four frames. Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July This has been an absolutely rotten tournament for me so far. Hopefully I can make amends for that on Thursday. Going with these four.

4pts J.Burnett to beat M.Fu 11/10 Blue Square

Burnett’s win over Robertson could have been described as a bit of a fluke but he stopped any questions of a fluke with his win over Selby and showed that his form is real, it is genuine and he will be hard to beat here. Marco Fu came through against Joe Perry but I think he’ll need to play better in this match to win. Full preview here:

And it gets worse. What used to be my most reliable sport from a betting angle is becoming a lottery. The PTC's may be good for the game but they're not good for the bank balance as they journeymen pros are stepping up.

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Friday early QF previews: 4pts S.Murphy vs P.Ebdon - Over 7.5 frames 10/11 Paddy Power

Murphy has been quite fluent in the tournament so far but it will be hard to find any fluency in this match. There will be frames where Murphy gets in and clears up but then there will be scrappy frames which will favour Ebdon. Ebdon gives everything in his matches whereas Murphy is playing well enough and has the temperament to cope with any antics from Ebdon but I still see this being close. Full preview here:

Both these players look to be in good form but the one worry for me from a Marco Fu point of view is that he hasn’t been tested in the tournament yet. Stephen Lee has survived a test and has benefitted from that. If Fu finds himself a couple of frames behind early on he will feel the pressure. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Friday later QF previews: 4pts M.Davis (-1.5 frames) to beat M.Gould 5/4 Paddy Power

Mark Davis is playing so well at the minute and with all the talk that Martin Gould is recovering from the effects of food poisoning I’m happy to take the in form Sussex man here. His performance against Robertson was one of the performances of the week as he didn’t just beat him but he beat him in an emphatic, dominant style, the sort of style we’ve not seen from him on the big stage before. Full preview here:

I wouldn’t say either man has played his best snooker this week and the one which can produce something near to their best snooker will win this match. I think that is likely to be Matthew Selt because he is playing with no pressure on him now. Full preview here:

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July Gets worse this. Never ever known a week like it. Even when the balls are nice to clear up to win, despite having a 143 break earlier in the match, Cao still misses the final green in the deciding frame :\. Really hoping Lee comes through now to cover the losses for the week. Still time to make a bit of it back though and I'm going with this one on Friday.

Re: Australian Goldfields Open - 9-15 July First semi final preview: 4pts P.Ebdon vs M.Fu - Over 9.5 frames 11/10 Paddy Power

I think this opening semi final will be a close match. Both men like to keep things tight and I would expect a few scrappy frames in this one. Ebdon has been to deciding frames all week and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if this went the same way but I don’t expect either to win it easier than 6-4. Full preview here:
