Dougie Costello on Folk Tune

Recommended Posts

I watched the 17:30 Cartmel to see my NAP Folk Tune racing and was happy as he cruised round the course on the bridle for the whole race. But even going into the last Dougie Costello didn't move on the horse because he was apparently 'confident' enough in the horse's ability to pass Baraathan in front. He just rode him hands and heels well into the final furlong. It was an absolute disgrace of a ride and caused what was by a long, long way the best horse in the field to get beat. Think the commentator mentioned arrogance and throwing it away but that's not really good enough when many people have laid money down and are just cheated by a jockey not taking the race seriously. Did any other PL members see this ride? Am I talking through my pocket or justified?

Re: Dougie Costello on Folk Tune Tough one. Obviously he thought he was on the best horse (which is probably true), but just didn't find as much as expected. Not to mention Cartmel is such a weird track. You can run a horse that is stone better at the weights and the course specialists will still find a way to beat him.

Spot on! Wouldnt have a bet on any Cartmel race, it is a very beautiful course dont get me wrong but produces some very strange results and form there doesnt hold up

Yes, he probably was on the best horse but the fact that he didn't move on it is ridiculous. He rode it in such a way that he could only really get beat, there was no way he could have won in the way he should have. It's sickening. I obviously wouldn't be complaining if I had been on the winner but it's just really frustrating when something like that happens. It makes you question why you bother.

Re: Dougie Costello on Folk Tune Folk Tune didn't find much when asked to quicken after the last hurdle and the winner fought back gamely. Think Costello was uber confident and wanted to win by the narrowest of margins and thus paid for it by losing. The way he was travelling he should have taken it up before the last and would have won by a dozen lengths. I've seen this hundreds of times by even the best of jockeys and it will always happen in the future. I personally would like to see longer bans of 3/6/12+ months. If they had these lengths of bans jockeys would ride out their mounts in fear of a long ban.

I sympathise with the OP completely, cockiness in the saddle is so frustrating. The same thing happened to me with that Silaah of Dandy Nicholls' earlier in the season and I got a bit of stick on here ("you are talking through your pocket" etc) for having a go at the jockey Mick O'Connell. As it happened, I was proven right, as the horse won several times subsequently when given proper rides and took it up earlier - I'm sure you'll be prove right with this one too - keep the faith and cash in next time.

Re: Dougie Costello on Folk Tune I'll probably be in a minority of one but I'd hardly blame Costello at all for Folk Tune's defeat. If anything, with hindsight, he went too early on the horse, because once in front Folk Tune found nil and was beaten by a far more genuine horse in Baraathen. Clearly Folk Tune is something of a nightmare for any jockey and, had Costello kicked on earlier, he'd have been outbattled and lost by even further. Video here:http://horses.sportinglife.com/Video/Racing/0,27770,454682_4,00.html On the contrary I felt Costello's ride on Madamlily later was really poor. He was far too complacent on a genuine horse, should definitely have kicked on much earlier and put the race to bed: http://horses.sportinglife.com/Video/Racing/0,27770,454998_4,00.html No financial interest in either race;).

Re: Dougie Costello on Folk Tune I think this is (unfortunately for captaincool who i'm gutted for) just a tale of two different horses racing styles here - Folk Tune is renowned for crumbling when asked for it's effort and finds little when push comes to shove and Baraathen is also a tough ride for other reasons. The horse appears to need scrubbed along from quite a way out over this kind of trip but finishes well for that pressure. Look back at Baraathen's last victory at Uttoxeter over 2m in July when looking a beaten horse a long way out and looks certain to finish last of the three as they enter the home straight, yet ends up winning by 18 lengths :eek It just looks to be the way that particular horse needs to be ridden over trips that are, most probably, short of ideal (has winning form over 2m5f). When Costello pushed the button on Folk Tune, the horse was just outbattled by Baraathen and kind of agree with what Labrador says, if anything Costello potentially went a little soon as had he been able to deliver the horse as near to the line as possible theres the possibility that neither would have had time to react the way they did to the 'battle' (ie Baraathen finding and Folk Tune hanging). Tough one and we'll never know the definitive answer unfortunately. I had no cash down either by the way chums :ok
