Need some poker advise

First of all sorry if I have posted this thread in the wrong section. For a long time I wanted to start playing Texas Poker but since I have never really played I wanted to get some tips. Something like, what kind of stakes to use, are there some basic rules like with sports betting. I have been betting on football for like 2 years and thanks to this forum got some good tips and advise. I am just playing for fun and never stake large amounts of money. Always bet what I can afford to lose. And also would like your advise of some good downloadable poker software for Mac. Based on my research I think Poker Stars is one of the best out there.
