Need some poker advise

Recommended Posts

First of all sorry if I have posted this thread in the wrong section. For a long time I wanted to start playing Texas Poker but since I have never really played I wanted to get some tips. Something like, what kind of stakes to use, are there some basic rules like with sports betting. I have been betting on football for like 2 years and thanks to this forum got some good tips and advise. I am just playing for fun and never stake large amounts of money. Always bet what I can afford to lose. And also would like your advise of some good downloadable poker software for Mac. Based on my research I think Poker Stars is one of the best out there. Thanks in advance.

Re: Need some poker advise

It's a deep game Mustafa for sure. I'd take a look at a thread I started years ago' date=' here [url']http://forum.punterslounge.com/f62/poker-novice-questions-15669/?highlight=poker+beginners I've moved this to the strategy forum and I'm sure the real (ie not me :))poker players will help you out. ;)
I was just thinking about starting playing without real money to get used to it. I just know the basics, that normally you fold much more often than you play.

Re: Need some poker advise Hi Mustafa, I'd advise you to play "play money" games only to get the hang of the mechanics. Since there's nothing at stake, you'll see a lot of ridiculous play, so it's not a very good way to learn the strategy. Most sites have "freeroll" tournaments occasionally (free to enter but with some prize money). Especially early on in the tournament there will often be some rather wild play (a lot of players will enter with the aim of getting a big stack early or getting knocked out) but if you get past that stage then you can get a reasonable game without risking anything, and maybe winning a little money (though you won't get rich). Once you're comfortable with the basics, I'd recommend checking out some of the PL exclusive tournament series (look in the Poker Tournaments forum). These are usually reasonably small buy-in tournaments (typically around $5) with added value, and you'll get to experience playing against some quite good players, for a much smaller cost than you'd normally have to pay, in a (usually!) friendly environment. Pokerstars is definitely a good and trustworthy site, but once you get past the very low stakes it's probably tougher than most sites. I'd recommend trying a few different sites to find which you like. Good luck, and I hope to see you at the tables!

Re: Need some poker advise

If you're folding most of the time' date=' that would be mean you are a tight player, but you don't have to be that. Loosen up your play and get involved more, it's not about your hand, it's about the players around you.[/quote'] Good tip :ok

Re: Need some poker advise

Thanks' date=' slapdash. The problem I have is patience. I know that after playing let's say for an hour and folding most of time I might get bored. But will give it a try surely, since I have some spare time these days.[/quote'] Great advice about just playing playmoney Mustafa. Once you know what's going on in the game,EG blinds are going up quickly and its time to make a move, then yes give Pokerstars a go. main reason is plenty of games at low level, the low level buy ins start from something like 2c not sure if these games are all turbos or how long some games last.if you just want a bit of fun then 25 games for 50c is a good cheap start. I would only move up over $1 when you have read and understand the Strategy advice on here. Not for me to advice on style,I play tight but i think it takes far more skill to play a loose skillful game. so maybe play tight for a while and loosen up when you understand strategy, good luck.

Re: Need some poker advise you will probably become bored quite quickly of the free play games and you will no doubt get sick of guys coming in and going all in every hand - i would advise useing these games only to familiarise yourself with the software - the fold/call/raise buttons and how you vary the size of your intended bets. Once you know what you are doing with the software i would suggest that you use the freerolls that most sites run to gain experience with no risk of any loss. i would not limit yourself to just one site - you can open accounts with most reputable sites without the need to deposit or give any banking details. As was said above you will find that it can be chaos for the first few levels but once you get down to the last 25% of the field you will find it plays quite well. If you do decide to deposit you should probably stick to STT's(single table tournys) and MTT's(multi table tourneys) as these have a set buy in and you know exactly how muck you stand to lose if you dont win - leave the ring games alone untill you are more familiar and confident withe the game as a whole. Good Luck and hope to see you soon in one of the PL games - I'll be the one with the short stack

That's the truth. I remember when there was some Texas Poker application on facebook and people were just doing exactly the same so I got bored really fast. By the way would you advise applications that are specialised on Poker like Poker Starts or Full Tillt Poker, or just the well known websites I normally use for betting.

if you are planning to play freerolls only for the first while then you can download as many different sites as you like most big bookies have poker sites and most offer freerolls - not many big freerolls on the go these days but there are plenty of small prizepool games on the go which are fine to learn the game. defo worth checking out the poker tournaments section as you will get heads up on any good value games coming up now get out there and try yer luck with some freerolls - you have nothing to lose:ok
