teaulc
Confidence has been considered as one of the most important qualities that can make a poker player a true professional. Confidence is nothing else but the mindset a player has, before a game starts. If you also love this game, then your wining chances will depend a lot on how positive your mindset is, even before you enter the casino. As a poker player you must know that not all sessions are winning sessions. There can be losing sessions as well, sometimes several in a stretch, but this should not shake your confidence. Always start a game with a mindset that you are here to collect your money and win the game. Showing confidence in a poker game does not mean voicing it in words to your opponents. It should only be restricted to the physical exhibit (in a casino) or calculated bets or calls (in online poker) of the confidence within, which says-you will win and there is nothing that can stop you from making money in the long run. There are strong chances that this might make your opponents feel intimidated which in turn will provide you a better control of the table in any poker game that you will be a part of. This is referred as “owing the table†and the main characteristic of this situation is that your opponents look at you before placing a bet or not feeling confident enough to play against you, even when they should. In many cases, it is not possible for poker players to reach the required confidence level, no matter what they do. They need to watch out in such cases and postpone their plans of playing serious poker for some other time. It is better for them to take up some other activity until they feel confident to play again. Missing a game when you are feeling low is a better option as compared to losing you money. If a player is not feeling confident then losing a poker game will make him or her feel all the more depressed. Poker players must always remember that even experienced professionals lose many games. Being confident is not about how someone plays when luck is with them, but is it about how well they play when luck does not favour. Even decent players manage to make a lot of money when luck is with them, but their game starts crumbling after several losing sessions because not all games can be won merely on the basis of luck. They lose because a bad run affects their confidence level; they make changes in their game at the wrong time and lose more. In short, confidence is very essential to become a consistent poker player because even if luck isn’t with you, you can change the game with the right moves. You will become shaky the moment you lose confidence and once this is obvious to your opponents through your activities in a casino or through your cards in an online game, you will start losing money. Poker is a game with a lot of variations and thinking clearly amidst a bad run and making the right decisions can make you a winner and all this isn’t possible without confidence. This is soo true for me when i'm feeling confident it helps get me 'in the zone' and play some superb poker which is hard to play against. Likewise lately i've a lot of game entered with the mindset that im leaving the game with nothing and indeed left down.

Nade
Re: How Important Is Confidence In Poker? I think the right mental preparation is 9/10ths of Poker as getting in the right frame of mind will automatically lead to making good decisions and good decisions make good results and that breeds confidence which leads to making good decisions, and that creates good results etc... It's all down to the individual in knowing what makes yourself tick, how to get in the zone and play well.
BAM
Re: How Important Is Confidence In Poker? I can recommend an good read - 'The Poker Mindset' the concept is old but interestingly enough applied to poker it's a good fit and works! It's also a good book to go back to now and then to fine tune. I've mentioned a few times on here that poker is all about confidence and timing and without that you're pish :ok

I'm having a couple of weeks off at present, should be back more refreshed.
steveharris
Re: How Important Is Confidence In Poker? I rather be skilled than be confident when playing poker. For me, getting lucky and confident are just the same thing, they're just a bonus.
