Cheltenham Open Meeting - Sunday 19th November 2023
Welcome to the bettrends Cheltenham Open Meeting Service!
Welcome to our first standalone service of the 23/24 Jumps Season, and we kick the season off in good style with the Cheltenham Open Meeting, which plays host to some top-class racing over the next three days. Sunday is the final day of the meeting, and hopefully we can end the weekend with a bang…
1:10 Cheltenham – The mallardjewellers.com Maiden Hurdle (Novices' Championship Hurdle Series Qualifier) (Class 2) (JB2)
The opening race at Cheltenham on Sunday, the 2m maiden hurdle, is a newly introduced race and recent Cheltenham bumper scorer THE KEMBLE BREWERY definitely looks one to follow as he embarks on a novice hurdle campaign. The daughter of Blue Bresil bolted up on bumper debut at Huntingdon, winning by over four lengths, and returned at the October meeting here with a good victory, again in a bumper, as he powered to a two-length success, staying on very strongly up the Cheltenham hill. The Kim Bailey yard are in flying form right now, operating at a 30% strike rate over the past fortnight, and are also 27.5% in novice and maiden hurdles so far this term. The four-year-old has yet to put a foot wrong in two starts so far, and whilst we have yet to see him jump a hurdle, he could prove to be potentially very smart over obstacles this term.
The biggest danger appears to be Tellherthename, a £200,000 purchase for the Ben Pauling yard following a five-length Point-to-Point win. The son of Malinas ran a stormer on hurdles debut at Ascot at the start of the month, travelling extremely well through the contest and giving the well-supported Nicky Henderson novice, Jango Baie, a real scare, but was just headed in the dying strides. A race that Henderson won with the great Altior back in 2015, that could turn out to be real top form and it was raced on soft ground, so we know he will handle conditions here on Sunday. The only concern here would be that the race was just two weeks ago, and he had a hard race there in a battle in testing conditions, so this could just come too soon early in his hurdling career.
John McConnell likes to target these early season Cheltenham races with his young horses, like Fennor Cross winning a similar race at last season’s October meeting, and the experienced Innatendue is interesting under Sean Bowen. She struggled as a juvenile hurdler when first arriving from France but did chase home some smart types in maiden hurdles last season in the form of Imagine and No Looking Back. Interestingly, she switched to Tony Martin at the turn of the year and was no doubt plotting for a big handicap but was unsuccessful at Fairyhouse when last seen in April. She has since switched back to McConnell and is dangerous to discount here despite still being a maiden after eight starts; McConnell is a great target trainer and could have found a nice opportunity here. Fellow Irish raider Morning Soldier has a similar profile, chasing home some decent juveniles last term in the form of Nusret and Sir Allen. The form of that defeat to Sir Allen reads well, with Boodles 1-2 Jazzy Matty and Byker in behind that day, but he is another who is yet to shed his maiden tag in eight attempts.
Nigel Twiston-Davies’ yard is in red-hot form of late, operating at a 30% strike rate over the last two weeks, and his Tedley ran a decent enough race behind the smart Favour And Fortune on hurdles debut at Hereford last time. He was perhaps a little outpaced over the minimum trip that day though and is maybe one not for today but one to keep in mind when stepping into handicap company up in trip later on in the season. Paul Robson’s Cannock Park won his Point-to-Point by ten lengths and was slightly inconvenienced when second on bumper debut at Carlisle in March. He got off the mark when making all in a Bangor bumper on seasonal return last time and whilst the form of that race leaves a little bit to be desired, he is one who will relish the testing ground and the more rain the better for this five-year-old.

1.45 Cheltenham – The cavani.co.uk Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase (Class 3) (WU)
There looks to be plenty of rain between the time of writing and Sunday afternoon and as such we may well see a change in going description. Taking a view on the weather this far out could well prove to be profitable with the race currently priced up in accordance with the current going, good to soft-soft in places.
Cheltenham is a testing track by nature and soft ground only brings stamina more to the fore. Marginal favourite Crebilly has two hurdle victories to his name, with the second coming on soft ground at Sandown at the end of last year. It was a fair performance, where he beat some useful rivals but did come at the end of a long season for many, which can exaggerate results. He was tried in top hurdle company, where he ran with a lot of credit but ultimately just fell short of that top level. Wonderwall hasn’t quite lived up to his bumper days promise and has only won one race since he finished seventh in the 2021 Champion Bumper at Cheltenham. He managed to win a hurdles race at Doncaster, beating the now 142 rated chaser City Chief by three lengths. If that form were taken literally, there is definite room to improve from a mark of 132 but he still only has the one start over fences. On the face of it he finished only three lengths behind 2023 Turners’ winner Stage Star but he was never getting there on that occasion and put in some very slow jumps, that will no doubt cost him should he do the same Saturday. He’s been busy enough on the flat over the summer and now returns to fences after a wind operation. There’s enough raw talent to bring him into the mix but ultimately his jumping many not stand the test.
Es Perfecto is a graduate of the pointing sphere and looks an obvious one from a mark of 124 on chasing debut. His form did drop off slightly last season and he looks to have had his fair share of injuries in his time. For an eight-year-old he doesn’t have many miles on the clock and if fences can help him rediscover that 2020 form, he’ll go close but it’s a big IF. Elle Perfecta could prove a danger from near the bottom of the weights however all her best form has come on good ground, so she may well struggle on a testing surface. Paul Nicholls loves these sorts of races, and his new recruit GINNY’S DESTINY is well worth another go. The son of Yeats ran too bad to be true on debut at the course back in October and is turned out quickly again by Nicholls. They’ve opted to stick with Cheltenham as opposed to a smaller a novice chase, which speaks volumes as no doubt they could try something easier. We know he’s proven on heavy ground and was also dropped 2lb by the handicapper after than run at Cheltenham. He still looks to be a top prospect, and this does look to be a slightly easier task on paper.

    GINNY’S DESTINY 1pt WIN @ 7/2 (Bet365)

2:20 Cheltenham – The Jewson Handicap Chase (Premier Handicap) (JB2)
With testing conditions expected on Sunday, this marathon trip of 3m3½f could turn into a real slog and those at the top of the weights could struggle to lug such hefty weights to victory. Our attentions then turn to the foot of the weights, and it is DOM OF MARY, who gets in right at the bottom off a featherweight of 10st4lbs who makes appeal here. David Bridgewater’s seven-year-old got off the mark over fences on heavy ground at Stratford last term from a mark of 115 and whilst he was then disappointing on his final start of the campaign when fifth at Uttoxeter, he never looked comfortable and didn’t jump with his usual fluency that day. He was generously dropped 3lbs for that effort and caught the eye on seasonal reappearance at Plumpton. Dropped out in the rear over 3m1f, he shaped as if he needed the run but caught our attention when staying on strongly from the back of the second last to be beaten just four lengths in fourth in the end. He will no doubt come on for the run there and he makes plenty of appeal here from an unchanged mark, he has always shaped as if a thorough test of stamina is just what he needs. He handles cut in the ground, is unexposed as a stayer over these marathon trips and has been completely overlooked by the market as he isn’t one of the ‘flashier’ types in the field.
Of those at the top of the market, and top of the weights, Guetapan Collonges has proven himself to be one of the more progressive staying chasers in Britain. He finished fourth in the always strong Classic Chase at Warwick from a mark of 126 before landing a strong Uttoxeter handicap from the same mark in February, with the consistent Mister Coffey back in second and the reopposing Wayfinder well back in fourth. He then finished fourth in the Midlands National from a 6lb higher mark, although he was well beaten that day, 24 lengths behind the eventual winner Major Dundee. He returned with a real good victory on seasonal debut at Carlisle back in October, pinging the last with a fantastic jump to put the race to bed and whilst the race wasn’t the strongest of events, was a fine display on reappearance. He is up 7lbs here though to a career high mark of 136, so this will require more.
City Chief carries top weight off a lofty mark of 142 for Nicky Henderson here but is the most unexposed in the field with just the four starts over fences and is no doubt the classiest in the field. The six-year-old landed the Grade 2 Towton Novices’ Chase at Wetherby last term but put in far too many mistakes to remain competitive when beaten by Sail Away to close the season at Ayr. He does have the tendency to throw in plenty of sketchy jumps and is prone to big errors, which is a concern in a big field here; both of his victories came in small fields in which he was allowed to dominate. Flash Collonges fell on that same card at Ayr when last seen at the end of the season, going down in the Scottish Grand National when well supported on the day. He did win well to shed his maiden tag over fences on his penultimate start at Newbury, but he is one who prefers a quicker surface than is expected on Sunday and the ground does look to have gone against Paul Nicholls’ eight-year-old.
2021 Coral Gold Cup winner Cloudy Glen has plenty of experience in these big-field, marathon contests and is one who goes extremely well fresh. He won Newbury’s lucrative handicap on seasonal bow in 2021, ran a cracker in the Grand National Trial at Haydock to finish third in 2022 and overall has won on reappearance in three of the last four years. He has slid down to a tempting mark of 142 (just 2lbs higher than his Coral Gold Cup win) but is ten years old now and has a fair bit to prove after being pulled up in the Ultima at Cheltenham. If showing any of his old vigour now fresh again, he would rate the biggest danger to our selection.

3:30 Cheltenham – The Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle (Premier Handicap) (JB2)
After outlining the trends and running our tried and tested trends system on the whole field for our Handicap Breakers service, we have four horses who come out on top and make it onto our shortlist. The first of those is IBERICO LORD for Nicky Henderson, who trained the well-handicapped Impose Toi to victory in the closing race yesterday in those same famous green and gold silks. The five-year-old struggled as a novice at the start of last season, out of his depth here in a Grade 2 on hurdles debut before a tired fall at Kempton on Boxing Day. However, he underwent wind surgery in January and returned in the Spring a completely different horse. He got off the mark in gutsy fashion in a Stratford novice in testing conditions and Henderson then decided to try his hand in the Sandown Novices’ Championship Final from a mark of 120. After being held up in the rear, he encountered a little bit of trouble after the second last before motoring home in eye-catching fashion under Aidan Coleman. I think if Coleman watched the race back, he would want to have a go at that again, as he left his mount way too far back and the way he powered home, he did look to be on the best horse in the race that day. The winner, stablemate Under Control, looks very smart and is well thought of at home, whilst the third, fourth and sixth have all reappeared this season with a victory; so, a 6lb rise looks fair for a good run in such a hot contest. With just four hurdles runs to his name, he is extremely unexposed and could be very well-treated from a mark of just 126. He has proven he goes with cut in the ground, and he looks to have a smashing chance under Nico de Boinville here.
His stablemate Luccia also makes it onto our shortlist, with James Bowen taking the ride, who rode her the last day. She was perhaps a little disappointing in the Listed Mares’ Hurdle at Wetherby last time out when pushed aside by You Wear It Well, and she wasn’t the most fluent over her hurdles that day. Perhaps she just needed the run, and if returning to the form in which she bolted up in two Listed events last term against the mares, she would have a massive say in proceedings. The five-year-old then finished fourth in the mares’ novices’ hurdle before running a stormer to finish third behind Inthepocket in the Top Novices’ Hurdle at the Aintree Festival. She is a real speedy two miler who has form as good as any in this field, however the main concern would be the ground, as at Cheltenham in March and at Wetherby last time, the testing conditions appeared to blunt that speed and she may just be seen to better effect on a quicker surface.
Also joining the shortlist is Neil King’s recent Grade 2 scorer Lookaway, who scooted up over course and distance here back in October in a real impressive display. Granted that was not the strongest of Graded contests and he had an experience edge on many in the field, but he dominated the race and won comfortably. He could be the pace angle here under Jack Quinlan, and it would be no surprise to see him hit the front and attempt to dictate affairs throughout. He makes his handicap debut here from a mark of 132 and looks to have developed into a real progressive hurdler after a shaky start last season; he has won all of his last three in fine style and may be hard to peg back here. Although it is worth noting, he received a 10lb rise for winning that Grade 2 and he would be a real strong selection if arriving here off a mark in the 120s instead!
Last but not least, we have the Welsh Champion Hurdle runner-up, Anyharminasking, rounding out the shortlist. Jonjo O’Neill’s six-year-old is of course famous for being the horse who beat superstar Constitution Hill in a Point-to-Point but has actually now developed into a solid handicapper destined to land one of these big pots. At Ffos Las the last day he was perhaps the horse to take out of the race, as he travelled extremely strongly all the way to the last and looked as if he would go past the winner and get up, before drifting badly to his left. He has a 1lb weight swing with Nemean Lion and will appreciate the strong pace here to aim at. He has his quirks, and everything has to go right for him, but he does shape as if he will land one of these big handicaps soon.

    IBERICO LORD 0.5pts E/W @ 15/2 (Ladbrokes, 4 places)

4.00 Cheltenham – The Turners Open NH Flat Race (Listed Race) (WU)
The usual competitive bumper brings the November meeting to a close on Sunday afternoon.
Brechin Castle looks an interesting enough favourite and you couldn’t help but be impressed with him at Sedgefield. He was well supported that day and they clearly think a lot of him. Soft ground should present no issues, but he is a point-to-point winner, so you’d have to question whether he has the turn of foot for a top bumper. Diamond Dice was only narrowly denied in a close-run affair at Hereford. That run came on good ground and it’s unclear whether soft ground will suit the Jonjo O’Neill runner. He was also under the pump a long way from home, so again could be another for further in time.
Paul Nicholls has an excellent record in bumpers and won this race in 2021. This year he is represented by Rickety Bridge and Fire Flyer. The former is partnered by Lorcan Williams and is only having his second start for the yard. On jockey bookings he looks to be the second string but there were encouraging signs on debut. The fourth has since come out and been well beaten, so there are questions marks over the form. Fire Flyer finished seventh in a Listed bumper at Newbury back in February, so certainly brings good experience. There were no obvious reasons to why he didn’t perform, so you’d be taking a chance on him in an equally competitive race.
Walks The Man rocks up here for Syd Hosie. The five-year-old is a big scopey type and looks to be a chaser in the making. His win at Newton Abbott came on a testing surface so there are plenty of positives however he could be one for later down the line. I’m going to take a chance on HAZY GLEN for Mick Easterby. Prominently known for training flat horses, it’s always wise to take note when one rocks up in a bumper. He made light work of things at Carlisle in pretty desperate ground and any rain would certainly aid his cause. Market support would be a definite positive for a shrewd operation and hopefully he can give us a good run for our money.

Cheltenham 1.10 This 2 mile maiden hurdle may be fought out by Kim Bailey’s hurdling debutant The Kemble Brewery who won at the last meeting here in a bumper and Ben Pauling’s Tellherthename who may have bumped into a smart one of Nicky Henderson’s at Ascot last time when going down by a nose to Jango Baie. The latter will have improved for that run so this former Irish point winner can go one better today under Kielan Woods.   TELLHERTHENAME 1 point win @ 2/1 BetVictor   Cheltenham 1.45 Just the seven line up here for this 2M 4F Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase where claims can be made for all. It maybe worth chancing the chasing debutant Crebilly who has to give weight away to all in the colours of J P McManus for trainer Jonjo O’Neill. He hasn’t been seen this season but ran out a 21 length winner on his re-appearance last season so hopefully he’ll be straight enough. Last seen winning a valuable handicap hurdle at Sandown in April he was given a positive write up by his trainer in a recent stable file and can take this.   CREBILLY 1 point win @ 9/2 Bet Victor   Fontwell 2.04 It’s going to be very testing at Fontwell today and this 3M 3 1/2f Southern National handicap chase will take plenty of getting. He maybe the oldest at thirteen years of age here but Emma-Jane Bishop’s Max Dynamo has a very good record fresh having won first time out last season by 25 lengths at Chepstow. 13lb higher here he only has four rivals to beat and looks the one to be on at the prices with James Best on board.   MAX DYNAMO 1 point win @ 8/1 BetVictor   Cheltenham 2.20 A competitive field of fourteen here for this 3M 3 1/2F Handicap Chase where stamina will be needed in abundance. One horse who stays really well is top weight Cloudy Glen who has an excellent record fresh which reads 14113 including the 2021 Ladbrokes Trophy Chase off of a handicap mark of 140. He can race off of 142 today and his trainer Venetia Williams is in excellent form with a win ratio of 43% at time of writing. Guetapan Collonges will strip fit, stays well and looks a big threat.   CLOUDY GLEN 1 point each way @ 8/1 bet365 1/5th 1234   Cheltenham 2.55 Just the four have declared for the Shloer Chase run over two miles and a classy event it is with Nube Negra who’s won the last two renewals, last year’s Tingle Creek winner Edwardstone and Jonbon who’s won ten of his 12 career starts plus the front running Editeur Du Gite. Jonbon will be hard to beat although first time out is scant value so the pick is Alan King’s Edwardstone who will enjoy the cut in the ground and has gone well fresh in the past.   EDWARDSTONE 1 point win @ 7/2 Betfred   Cheltenham 3.30 The afternoon’s feature race is the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle which has a very open look about it with a field of sixteen going to post. Many can be given chances but it maybe worth backing the Nicky Henderson trained, JP McManus owned five year old Iberico Lord. With a similar profile to Friday’s winner for the same connection’s Impose Toi, he may have a few pounds in hand of his mark of just 126 and can give Henderson another winner at Cheltenham. Welsh Champion Hurdle winner Nemean Lion and the runner up from that race Anyharminasking (the only horse to have ever beaten Constitution Hill, all be it in a point to point)can also run well in a tough handicap.   IBERICO LORD 1 point each way @ 7/1 William Hill 1/5 12345   Cheltenham 4.00 Ben Brookhouse’s Brechin Castle has made a highly promising start to his career having won a point to point at Ballycrystal in Ireland back in February prior to a scintillating victory in a six runner bumper at Sedgefield when pulling well clear of his field which included a well fancied David Pipe runner, showing a good turn of foot in the soft ground to pull clear and win by 14 lengths. This is obviously harder but he’s done nothing wrong and can give his young trainer a winner in this two mile listed bumper.   BRECHIN CASTLE 1 point win @ 9/4 bet365

Trends for the PP Gold Cup
Light weights perform well. The ideal range is 10st 2lb to 11st with 8 wins from 78 runs and a profit of 51 points. The remainder have 2 wins from 98 runs with a loss of 75 points.
Horses should have winning form (but no too much). Horses with 1 win from their last 6 races have 7 wins from 57 runs with a profit of 67 points.
Horses that finished 1st last time have a poor record with just 1 win from 41 runs.
This leaves just 1 horse, IL RIDOTO at 10/1 5 places

Difficult race to rate with a few of these reverting from chase to hurdles ....buddy one looks a solid hurdler and should run well .....the dark horse appears to be come on teddy .....he will have to overcome a 2 year layoff but it appears the handicapper has given him every chance if the trainer can get him ready ....let's take a chance for a bit of fun. ....5pt Ew ...top 2

That's a shame .....but I get where your coming from ......I'm a professional chef in my day job and my biggest handicap is finding time to rate .....if I've been in a kitchen 10 hrs the last thing I wanna do is come home and rate so I do miss out sometimes ......
It's nice to win of course and I've had some fab wins but I rate and get involved purely for the enjoyment of "getting involved"....and that's the truth ....I love horses. ...Im in awe when I'm standing near the rails and I see them take off like they are flying  ....and their intelligence never fails to amaze me .....it's like doing a crossword ....I like the challenge of tackling a race and the money really is 2nd rated for me .....I very much get frustrated sometimes when I've spent an hour rating a race only for 3 donkeys to fill the places and my selections rolling in 6th and 9th ..lol ....but that's racing .....it's not personal .....it's just how it works  ....as soon as I've seen the result ..the race is forgotten ....and I move on to the next ....
Racing enlightens my life ....challenges me .....some people might find the tackling of a huge handicap daunting or really hard work but I find it soothing 😁....it helps me unwind and there's the social aspect too ...either going to races with friends or coming on the forum it's nice to connect and share thoughts and listen to people's points of views which never fails to fascinate me .....
I hope you find your mojo and stick with us 👍

1.19 Wetherby - HAAFPIECE 13/2 eway Betfair , local trainer Pam Sly hasn't had many winners this season but those who have won have been at double figure odds but she's had loads placed , this one will benefit from run 14 days ago & is a CD .
3.11 Lingfield - SUMMERGHAND 14/1 eway William Hill , won this race last year & runs in nearly all top class sprint races , draw in stall 8 not ideal but will do all his best work at the business end , I think 14/1 is over priced .
