  1. Re: England > Weekend > FA Trophy 1st Round Nov 30-Dec 1

I don't understand the top teams playing weakened sides?? why wouldn't your manager want a trip to Wembley and some good prize money for each round? it seems mad to me that teams play weakened teams when theres a trip to Wembley at stake
As someone whose team won the Trophy last season I can tell you why weakened teams are played...you only make money from the tournament if you get to Wembley. Wrexham lost money on every one of the earlier rounsd last year. The prize money, for the bigger clubs, isn't that great either. http://www.thefa.com/fa-trophy/more/fa-trophy-prize-fund I know we will be resting players against Gresley as well. However, I am sure every manager puts out a team they believe can win. We didn't play a full team until the semi-final.
  2. You know' date=' Dartford are just in a terrible place where nothing goes right...two goals conceded on free kicks early, which was all there was, really. They will win another game this season, right? I hope I'm alive to see it and/or profit from it.[/quote'] Even when we beat them 5-1 they went 1-0 up, could have gone 2-0 up, and then imploded. They are lively in midfield and have a nippy front two, but their defence was all over the shop with personnel changing from game to game. If they don't get that settled then even Hyde will beat them! Sent from my HTC One X using PL Forum
  3. Re: England > Midweek > Skrill Prem, N & S, Northern, Southern, Ryman Nov 25-27 At the price I believe that Braintree are a decent punt to win at Aldershot. I don't think too much can be read into home team's demolition of Southport at the weekend as Southport have been shocking away from home and, in desperation, had signed Brodie on loan. The hammering was a surprise, certainly, but Aldershot now come up against a far more streetwise team in Braintree who, in addition, have a tidy away record. I don't see Aldershot as favourites here and will definitely play on the away team. Next a punt on the team that just keeps giving...Salisbury. They host Forest Green who, on Saturday, were no great shakes at ours and, to boot, lost their club captain to two yellows for a mad three minutes, meaning a reorganisation is needed in defence. Opposing FGR has also been something of a gift this season and, after a mini-revival, they came down to earth with a rapid bump when we turned them over at the weekend. The new manager has his work cut out and, as was apparent to some over the summer , a team with 9 strikers on the books was never going to be a happy side. Rumour has it that, for example, Andy Mangan has had his contract paid up. Salisbury, on the other hand, had to come from behind to beat an in form Macclesfield; a performance that shows, once again, they keep going right to the end of a game. Unbeaten at home since the first game of the season, odds against seems a tidy play to me. Next, I will play on Barnet if I can get evens or better (as I never play odds on away) as Dartford can't buy a result. Apparently the performance was better in their narrow defeat against Gateshead at the weekend, but they lost influencial midfielder Lee Noble to a red. He caused us a few problems when we won 5-1 last week and was one of the few to come out of that game with any credit. Without him to create, and with a revolving door policy in defence with loanee after loanee, I expect Barnet and Mr Davids to pick up the points. Finally, a bit of a speculative punt on Alfreton to win at Nuneaton. Nuneaton keep grinding out results but their win against Chester on Saturday was pretty toothless by all accounts whereas, surprisingly, Alfreton continue to go well and are top of the November form table. Admittedly thier away form is no great shakes and their play off place is based on their home form, but Nuneaton ar beginning to settle in the table to the level I expected them to be in. Not one for the mortgage at a price around about 2/1 or bigger, I will take a chance on the away side here.

  4. Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Nov 23 I was there on Tuesday and their defence was dire, so much so that they changed both centre backs after 53 minutes. The keeper doesn't inspire much confidence either. However, for the first 5 minutes of the game the team was fantastic!! I feel sorry for the two hardworking strikers and Lee Noble in midfield, who was trying to stem the tide pretty much on his own in midfield. Martin, the left winger on loan from Luton, also had some nice touches. However once they conceded they fold ed and, frankly, it could have ended 2-8!

  5. Re: England > Midweek > Skrill Prem Nov 12

Final bet in this division is Gateshead at Wrexham. I am still unsure as too how good Gateshead are as they have had a pretty kind fixture list' date=' but a draw against Luton and Oxford were decent efforts and suggest they might well be in the play-off picture. Wrexham have stuttered all season and it is hard to see why Gateshead are 21/10 to win this and if anything I would make them slight favourites.[/quote'] We have gone over 430 minutes at home without conceding a goal in open play. Of our last two defeats we deserved a point at both Macclesfield and Salisbury. In addition our performance at the weekend was pretty much the best we have played all season. This to me is a pretty even game as Gateshead have certainly improved since we thumped them in the reverse fixture in September. On that, it seems quite ridiculous that we will have played both our games vs Gateshead before we have played either game against other teams!
  6. Re: England > Midweek > Skrill Prem Nov 12

Any shouts for BTTS? Macc v Kidderminster seems likely but I'm not sure. Barnet to beat Weling? Halifax to beat Hyde?
Your first and third picks are decent enough shouts but I can't be having Barnet ot beat Welling. Barnet will be missing their best forward, who was sent off at the weekend, and I don't know what Davids will decide to do (I think he has one hat to randomly pick out a formation) and another hat (to randomly pick his own position within the team). Welling are decent enough away from home so really, although it is no play for me, I would be drawn towards Welling despite Barnet's good home record.
  7. Re: England > FA Cup > 8th - 10th November In a rush so just a short post. Newport's injury crisis is fairly common news and Braintree are one of the form teams of the Conference at the moment. Assuming their pudding of a ground passes muster I fancy them to turn over the visitors. I can only repeat, in relation to Salisbury, what has been said before and I will probably take them giving up a goal start.

  8. Wrexham will be well short of centre halves this weekend. Those missing last weekend are only just back in training. Wright got himself sent off for assaulting Edgar David's elbow with his mouth so is out and we can't move Ashton into the centre from left back because the natural left back, Hunt, also got sent off. Artell has a minor Achilles injury but it could get worse so we will have a makeshift defence. We are way too short. Sent from my HTC One X using PL Forum

  9. Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Sept 27-28 There are times when you look at the weekend's fixture in this league and you can see no value...and then there are the other times where you are licking your lips. This is one of those other times. Wrexham v Cambridge Although Cambridge are favourites the bookies still seem to be pricing up Wrexham as if it is last season and not current form. Having won two on the bounce and performed far better than we had started off this season, we went to Aldershot looking for three wins on the bounce and were lucky to get nil. We created little save via a young left sided player called Theo Bailey Jones, who was inexplicably subbed 8 minutes into the second half, and could have lost by more. Midweek we were two down after 18 minutes and then, simply by Jay Harris dragging everyone with him, we levelled before the most bizarre winner for Braintree (when it is online I will post a link). However additional problems for us now (apart from a rampant Cambridge arriving) are we are now four centrebacks down and out and short of at least one right back. The players are arguing with each other on the pitch and the fans are losing patience with the manager, who was disgracefully booed when he came ON the pitch as sub midweek. Nothing needs to be said about Cambridge and our only hope is that former hometown favourite Chris Maxwell feels sorry for us and drops a couple of shots into the net. Away win Woking v Nuneaton Nuneaton's bubble may soon burst and they were well beaten midweek, but Woking are all sorts of dire at the moment and should be there for the taking. Nuneation have the kind of forward line who will dreaming of playing their hapless hosts and it is just the type of opponent they would want to face. Away win Hereford v Luton Now Luton have realised that McNulty is a decent defender and can organise what was a misfiring defence last season, and Still is finally sorting out his best forward line out of the options he has, Luton have started to score the goals expected of them and are supported by a rock solid back line. I am not sure they are the finished article yet and would like to see them against a top six side, but they face a Hereford side which is average at best and, although they sneaked a win against Lincoln midweek, do not look as if they will cause Luton's backline too many problems. On the other hand you can see Luton scoring at least one. Away win FC Halifax v Chester FC I have played on Chester to be bottom four at 13/2 this week with Sky as I think they are a bit shell shocked at the moment. Leaving aside the win at ours (and, as I have said, we are nothing special at the moment) most of the Skrill Prem teams will be viewing then as part of the food chain at the moment. Halifax are unbeaten at home and have won 5 of their six games and yet are odds against. This is the bet of the weekend IMO Home win Barnet v Salisbury After losing their first two games of the season, Salisbury have more than settled down to the higher league and are unbeaten since whereas Barnet are on a horrible run, not having won all month. No one really understands the management issue but one player from Macclesfield tweeted after Davids made his first appearance on the pitch, that the other players had to call him Mr Davids when calling for the ball. That may be bollocks but, frankly, so is the way Barnet is being managed and it has undoubtedly affected the players, who came out of the traps flying at the start of the season. It might do to play safe in the DNB market but my pick is Away win Finally FGR v Gateshead The away team were poor when we gubbed them 3-0 last week, but at 9/2 are too big to sneak a win against a spluttering FGR. The home side's manager is, to my mind, and probably addpea's as well, a dead man walking and should have at least reached the play offs last season with the squad he had. This season he has overloaded on strikers and has finished games with four up front. FGR may win but, on form they are not 8/13 shots, even against Gateshead, who have won their last two. Away win

  10. Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Sept 13-14 As far as tonight's game is concerned, both Artell and Carrington have been cleared tonight. It should bolster what has been a defence letting in a couple per game, and both know the system, with Artell with us last season and Carrington playing some pre season games with us. Kev has it spot on, and I am even more set in my under 2.5 bet now.

  11. Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Sept 13-14 As far as Wrexham are concerned we have signed Dave Artell (Northampton) and Mark Carrington (Bury) this week, although whether international clearance is through by Friday God knows!! They should help shore up what has been a leaky defence where Morrell has taken to playing one of the best left backs in the league the centre of the defence. In midfield we will have Jay Harris back so expect a change there. Up front? Don't know but they haven't been getting the service no matter who plays. Not looked closely at the game yet (and when I do it will probably be from behind the couch) but under 2.5 goals looks good to me as an initial glance

  12. That last stat is pretty amazing really given they don't have that strong a squad and I still think they could end up going down. I was tempted but I am not sure there is a lot of value in the price' date=' but that could be down to it being Nuneaton and can't fault you for wanting to back them.[/quote'] Looking at the respective positions how can 7/5 not be value. We are devoid of confidence at the moment. I don't think we had a shot on target at home to Chester and if the players didn't get up for the derby then there are problems. 13. Re: England > Weekend > Skrill Prem Sept 7 Sadly for me Nuneaton to beat Wrexham is my pick, but you should never let your heart rule your wallet. We have been poor so far and the last two performances, away at Lincoln and then home versus Chester, had little to recommend them. Defensively we are light and porous at the moment, mainly because of injuries. Our midfield is missing Harris and Keates, who make it function, and our forward line at the moment is firghtened to shoot even if they get the ball. The only bright spot there was Bradley Reed who has now gone to Wolves but was loaned back to us for a month. However, wait for this, he is unlikely to feature as he requires international clearance to go to Wolves and then international clearance to come back!! With Ogleby off with the U21's (that 1-0 defeat to san Marino is a doozy!) our forward line could look positively geriatric...and we head off to face a Nuneaton team surprising everyone at the moment, playing with confidence both at the end of last season and this...they have only lost 2 of their last 21 league games and that was agianst Kiddy and Newport last season. This season the have turned over Kiddy and Grimsby already There is 7/5 available on Nuneaton and, to cheer me up tomorrow, I will have a piece of that.

  14. Apparently he has got himself emgaged this week. His fiancee looks attractive but I haven't a clue what her guide dog looks like! Congrats, mate :ok A sign of our times that this announcement best goes in the non-league forum!! The banns will probably be published in the Racing Post!

  15. Just an update on Wrexham. Two new signings have received international clearance (and what a farce that is) meaning that we are no longer quite as light at centre back. That should make us stronger defensively. Together with the cb a winger who has been with us for weeks will also go into the squad, and both players have played in preseason friendlies and know our system. At Halifax midweek the makeshift defence played hoofball, got a man sent off and went in 3-1 down after 45. Second half we kept it on the floor and deserved a point, especially as a stonewall penalty appeal was turned down. I am not suggesting a punt on us today, but expect improving performances in the next few games. Sent from my HTC One X using PL Forum
