I have a limit on my stake for placepots.
Cheltenham is one exception along with Aintree.
My plan here is 3 selections per race. This amounts to 729 lines and at 5p stakes is a total stake of £36.45
If I just get 1 winning line then this means the placepot needs to pay at least a £729 dividend to at least get my money back. Not a big ask at cheltenham with the dividend usually big. If I double uo in a couple of races I may get the placepot up for 10p 20p or even more.
Here are my selections
1.20 The 1st race you dont want to go out! So look for one that you would personally back to win the race . Mine would be METIER . Now im looking for horses that will come off the pace ..ones that will finish strong and take advantage of any mistakes uo front. My picks here SOARING GLORY and BALLYADAM . Yes ive not included appreciate it ....not because it hasnt got a chance but is my 4th pic and I got to keep to my plan . If it fails to place this will knock loads of tickets out.
1.55 I have to put ALLMANKIND and SHISKIN in this one . If one fails to place again there will be lots of losing tickets . If they both place then I double.up. If they both unplace then already the dividend will be big . So I will add the outsider ELDORADO ALLEN in has I feel this will be in top 3 anyway.
2.30 4 places here . I have to put OK CORAL in my placepot here . Has gone well fresh in the past and Mark walsh takes the ride for henderson. Its difficult to choose from the others so I will add PYM and HAPPYGOLUCKY for the reason they are previous course and distance winners.
3.05 My first pick here is SILVER STREAK....tom obrien gets a spare ride here and in my opinion has a very good chance. ABRACADABRAS conditions to suit and EPATANTE bidding to win again are my other 2 selections. I may be mad to leave out bromheads 2 but hey this is where the placepot can get massive if the likes of honeysuckle are unplaced.
3.40 INDEFATIABLE is my 1st selectiin here just because has a goid record here . DAME DE COMPAGNIE looks sure to go well and BLACK TEARS will come off the pace here and take advantages of any mistakes.
4.15 if I make it this far then Im pretty confident because my best each way bet today is in this , HER INDOORS ...will have waiting tactics and king in good form . ZOFFANIEN won well last time and CURIOS BRIDE who has ew chances on previous form are my other 2 .

Maybe he's just been running the horses that he knows are not good enough to get into any of the Cheltenham races

A quick look back at Leicester's race on Friday first and it saw a good front running ride from Tom Scudamore on the winner who will know doubt be Aintree bound now. I can see him running well although you do wonder if he will be able to reverse form with Cat Tiger let alone beat the other possible leading contenders. Peacocks Secret has run well in 2nd and ought to be able to find a winning opportunity this season and the 3rd Killiney Court benefitted from the jockey change and the drop in trip. Clondaw Westie was disappointing again back in 6th.
This will be a briefer preview than is sometimes the case as I had my vaccine yesterday and my arm is hurting whilst I type! Handily though for me there are only two possible winners. I am just as happy to oppose Maitree Express as I was when he was meant to run at Ludlow and as I keep saying I'm Wiser Now will always find at least 1 too good.
I was pretty strong on Golden Tobouggan when he was due to run in this contest in 2019, but he didn't want to come out onto the track and had to be withdrawn. I'm even stronger on him this time around as his form is miles clear of anything else in the rest. I was a bit surprised he was so well backed at Wincanton last time as he needed to step up a fair bit on his Maisemore October win, but he duly showed the sort of form in the 2019 season when he finished 2nd to 3 good horses. He added a 4th one to that at Wincanton when Caid Du Berlais beat him in what was a very good performance. I honestly can't see how anything else in the race could have finished 2nd in that Wincanton contest and a repeat should be more than enough.
The other one who has a chance for me is Envoye Special who was 3rd to Chameron and Cousin Pascal at Leicester. Now he was 29L behind them, but we know that form is strong and he will appreciate the better ground here. He travelled well into the race, but didn't see the race out in the conditions especially given the opposition. He showed promise on his 5th behind Salvatore at Larkhill in December as well. I want him onside just in case something happens to Golden Tobouggan, but I am very strong on the favourite winning this.

It may be worth noting that it is unusual that Mullins has gone 19 runners without a win leading upto cheltenham ( hes had some fancied horses beaten )
This would not matter with some small trainer but this is not a thing you want to see with this top trainer .
Obviously hes top trainer at cheltenham but take note that he is on the cold trainers list at the moment ....something you havnt and wont see too often.
19 runners without a win is not what you want to see at this time......

I have just been reading an article on placepots and its interesting a read .....
Its focussed on cheltenham this year and its expects the placepot pools to reach record highs ...they expect the pools to be well over £ 1 million each day . Also because more players will be at home this year and new players will be trying these exotic bets for the first time .
Apparently 5 percent of players just go for the fav in every leg which is a tough ask at any meeting anyway.
Big players will select all runners in 4 horse races or less ..guaranteeing to get through that legs.
Some players have be known to play 10,000 lines plus at cheltenham ....I would imagine these would be 10p lines ...staking out £1000 '...though it could be even 1p stakes ( can do 1p lines on course but minimum 5p or 10p online )
Odds on favourites at cheltenham are unsuprisingly the most selected horses and if these are unplaced they knockout a big numbers of lines and divudends are massive.
So remember to put at least 2 selections in these races ...hoping the fav gets unplaced.

There are , in my opinion , a few good each way bets today with horses with light weights.
2.50 fortissimo Lingfield .....was with mark johnston but now with lee carter and showed ability last year and at 25-1 worth an each way bet.
2.10 cryogenics Catterick ......this is a fairly poor race and could be a placepot buster ....flanagans field , hey bob , boss des motts , shadows girl all have claims but Cryogenics carrying only 10st 2lb is the one to be on here . Will hill is paying each way 4 places and at around 12-1 is my Best bet of the day .....has one over this distance and the trainer has a winner now and again and after having a run on the flat a few weeks ago will go well today back over hurdles .
3.30 gavi di gavi and school of thought carrying only 8st 8 and 8st 13 look the two here for the forecast with favour just going to gavi di gavi who has shown enough here to be in top 2 at least off this weight .
3.32 lapford lad ...alot here with chances at big prices including definite winner , galtee mountain and ermyns emerald but carrying 10st 3 my selection has a great each way ( 4 places ) ...only concern is the 606 day abscense but was fav for its last 4 starts last year which is unusual from a small yard . So in this field should be competitive if ready to perform. 18-1

I was looking through some of my placepots returns and below is an example of a winning placepot . I did this for a 10p ( 72 lines ) ''total stake £7.20 and managed to double up so got the dividend for 20p worth .
The placepot was at southwell on the 4th aug 2020 and it paid £4,732.90...' so giving me back £946.58 for my 20p winning share.

Ive noticed over the past years that placepot players banker the 1st and 2nd fav in the Gold Cup ....when these are unplaced it knocks out 80 percent of tickets ! .'....making the placepot dividend massive ...as you can see from the returns above.
It only takes 3 maybe even only 2 races where all placed horses are outsiders and again the return can be massive fir small stakes / layout .
Give it a go at Cheltenham.
Remember there is no banker bet especially at cheltenham ....so minimum of two selections per race to give yourself that chance of scooping .....

Thats the thing with placepots . Prices are irrelevant ....the placepot is a pool bet ...so it depends on how many tickets / units are running on that placed horse.
However you want to try and get the favourite unplaced this is because lots of players just select the fav for each race. So if these are placed obviously more tickets / units will remain .
Indeed you can have 5 winners and the last leg let you down .
Always best to have at least 2 selections in the last race.
This is a story that I will never forget for the rest of my life and one that nearly made my life different. ................I did the jackpot once at ascot and I had 1st 5 winners .....and there was only 2 tickets remaining ....I had the fav and so did other ticket .
We were going to share the pool £602,000 ..... £301,000 each !!!
I put down Fav because it was 2-5 on in the paper .
To be honest I didnt expect to get to last race but when placing the bet I thought if I do get to last leg I want to be on one with a real chance.
Bearing in mind I had a 33-1 winner of the 1st leg and the 5th leg was a 25-1 of a 20 or so runner handicap.
Anyway I went in my local bookies to watch the race ....and everyone congratulated me because this horse couldnt apparently lose.
Before the race the 2nd fav was backed and on the off I was cheering my horse because it when 5 lengths clear and we were all cheering in the bookies because my horse won !!!!
Everyone was patting me on the back ....I had tears ...thinking I was going to buy a new house car ...also my son was only a few months old ...so going to get him everything he wanted ....all this excitement lasted 1 minute !!!
They returned the s.p .....the winner returned Joint Favourite !!!! and it was the highest cloth number of the two so I didnt win !!! Makes me sick now even typing it .....that changed my betting forever and I was in a trance for a week and just felt physically more so mentally ill ....I just kept on asking why ...why ...I couldnt believe it .
If I only had ticked the horse number instead of fav .....if only that initial 2nd fav wasnt backed ....gutted to this day .....but the only thing that I can say is ......its gambling and maybe one day I will hit big ....we all think that ....but thats the closest ...u cant get no closer to winning the jackpot.
So now you know why I dont tick fav even for placepot

Yes I try not to lay out more than £15 per placepot .
The average placepot pays £400 .'...so on that basis and if I only get the placepot up for 1 line at 5p unit stake then the return would be £20.
Cheltenham is different ....where I try a few more lines ...3 selections per race which is a total of 729 bets = at 5p lines = 36.45
Seems alot but if I double up a few times could hit for 20p or 40p where I would expect a very good return.

Yes it is fun because I have the totepool live app ....it shows you how many units are going through to the next leg ...and how many units on each horse for the next leg .
Cheltenham there will be probably 500,000 - 700,000 in the pool.
Though beleive it or not the little meetings with only 2 to 4 runners in each race pay very big dividends .
The reason being is because you have to pick all the winners of each race just to win the placepot

Hi this how to calculate your placepot selections and the reason you may pick more than one selection per race :
The thing is like EW betting terms the placepot has the same terms :
1 - 4 runners ( you must pick the winner )
5 - 7 runners ( your selection must finish in top 2 )
8 runners or more ( top 3 places )
16 runners (handicap) or more (top 4 places )
Reasons to pick more than 1 selection each race :
So considering you need to get the winner of a 4 horse race then it would be wise to pick at least 2 but personally I do all 4 to guarantee to get through that particular race.
5 runner races ...again at least 2 selections is wise . The reason being they might withdrawal one at the start meaning you have to get the winner of the race .
Big field races. Goes without saying that you can pick 3 or 4 in a race with 16 or so runners and still not one of then finish in the frame . So again wise to at least pick 2 in big fields.
Heres how you calculate your perms :
multiply selections race by race for instance :
race 1 ....4 selections
race 2 ....3 selections
race 3 ...'2 selections
race 4....2 selections
race 5 ...''3 selections
race 6 ...'2 selections
so 4x3x2x2x3x2 = 288 bets ( so 5p would be 14.40 stake )
so if you pick 2 sekections per race this would be 2x2x2x2x2x2 = 64 bets
you calculate your returns same way so for example :
race 1 ....2 of your sekections place
race 2 ....'1 of your sekections place
race 3....'1 of your selections place
race 4 ....2 of your sekections place
race 5 ....2 of your selections place
race 6.....'2 of your selections place
2x1x1x2x2x2 = 16 ( so you have got the placepot up 16 x your unit stake ....so for 5p stake ...you would have it up for 80p )...'..'so if the placepot dividend was say 10,000 '.....'then you would get 8,000.

If we all placed the bet then would this be counter productive because as it is a pool bet the individual returns would be lower the more members that place the bet. This is one bet where it is definitely better to go against the crowd.
