  1. Re: poker tracker is killing online poker Do you not think tracking software has the ability to help turn average players into good players? To make my point more clear. Do you not feel that there is an increasing polarisation of the player base caused by info site and tracking software? Or at least the potential for there to be so? In other words there are only good players (lots) and bad players (a few) and not much in between? I don't think that is true at lower levels, but talking to a lot of the top pros they seem to think it is at the higher levels for sure...

  2. Re: poker tracker is killing online poker He doesn't mention HEM, but to be fair that's not really relevant to the point. I think the whole issue around tracking software is really interesting, which is why we ran the article. It is certainly something that should be more openly disucssed. It's certainly an interesting 'problem' for the poker sites to look into. An ideal situation for them would probably be everyone of an equal standard with the money slowing being passed around and everyone losing to rake. But is it really good for business for there to be, as we see a lot these days, tables with 4-5 good regs using tracking software and having a significant edge on the 1-2 fish? Jamie does make a good point that the key to keep a losing player coming back for more is that they have the illusion they are winning frequently enough for it to be enjoyable. If every single time you sit down you get beaten up by a table of good players that will quickly cease to be fun. If you are JUST a gambler, there are easier and less embarassing ways of gambling (roulette, blackjack etc etc). Noobs surely also means players learning the game, and players who are too lazy to learn more etc Sorry for epic post. Just my two cents. I haven't made my mind up either way to be honest...

  3. Re: Inside Edge/Blue Sq GUKPT

the bloke who knocked you out and now chip leader has is llocation as california but only UK ROI allowed
I think this is massively unlikely to be where is actually from, as there are no US players allowed on the iPoker network. I will look into it though when the BlueSq folks have recovered from this week's Cheltenham madness.
  4. Re: Answers on a postcard. With Nade's permission I used this hand for the Pro Views feature in the April issue of InsidePoker. It's not out until March 19th, but I thought I would give you a sneak preview of John Tabatabai's analysis. There are two other hands of Nade's analysed by John in the mag, but you will have to get a copy to see those I'm afraid. If anyone else is interested in having a pro take a look at some of their tricky hands then please PM me or send me an email. Analysis Below Pre-Flop I don’t personally use stats too much, but from the limited knowledge I have 22/18 doesn’t give away too much info. His range for flat-calling a big blind that is re-raising a button depends more on your image on the table. Given the level we are playing at it is unlikely he is playing tricky with big pair or A-K. It is most likely he is playing his position with a variety of hands from pocket pairs to suited connectors. The Flop You have an overpair on a good dry board, so you should continuation bet to build the pot and extract value while having the best hand. The pot is $24 so you should generally look to bet around $18, which is two thirds of the pot. Betting half the pot is a bit too small and skews your hand range for the future when you miss the flop and want to bluff your opponent off of his. When the button flat calls he could have hit something or just be floating, as many online players like to do these days. It really is very dependant on your opponent and his tendencies. The Turn If you have a bad image it is good to bet here as he won’t believe you have a 10 and will call you down light. However, if you have a tight image he will probably think that you wouldn’t bet without the 10. Consequently this makes your hand look stronger than it is. I don’t think there is one right answer here. If I had a tight image I would check call. If I had a more aggressive image I would bet expecting to get looked up lighter. The River Once he flat calls the turn and the river double pairs the board it is very difficult to extract any more value by betting the river, unless you have history with this player of three-barrel bluffing him. Generally, when you check here a lot of his pocket pair type hands will check behind hoping to win at showdown. The only hands that go all-in here are slow-played tens, rivered fours or missed straight draws such as 8-9. However, at this limit I find it hard to believe we are ahead to call here now, and I think a fold is a better option.

  5. Re: Answers on a postcard. I have to admit I'm just interested in opinions as I like to see how people think about poker and the kind of strategy questions people ask themselves and want answered from the mag perspective. I agree with Sean that why not bet $55 as if you are going to call $30 you are probably going to call $55. That said it's still more than half a buy-in. I was thinking the opposite on the timing though Billy. I meant more that people tend to act quite quickly when bluffing on the river. Oh and I also agree that I am running the risk of overanalysing it here!! :)

  6. Re: Answers on a postcard. I know that. But $55 is a half pot bet there unless my insta-maths is rubbish. He could have bet less, especially if he was hoping for a crying call. It's a 55 BB bet. It's not a small bet. Although I don't think it's an odd bet size bearing in mind the previous action and the pot size. But if you had the nuts would you not at least pause to think of the bet size most likely to be called?

  7. Re: Answers on a postcard. Nade. What do you make of the sizing and speed of his river bet? Does that not make you a bit suspicious? That said it's hard to see him calling with a draw or air on the turn unless you two had a really weird dynamic that session. More importantly why are you still at that table if there is a good reg with position on you?

  8. Re: what would be a sustainable ROI

Hey all, I wrote that article for PokerPlayer (i'm their strategy editor) and whilst it's certainly possible to have an roi% exceeding 100% over the long term that's by no way the mean. If you OPR Annette_15, JohnnyBax and AjkHoosier for PokerStars they've all got amazing ROI%. AJK is 162% over 5113 mtts (this is skewed by one score of $900k), Annette = 108% over 2782 mtts and Bax is 87% over 5479 mtts. Of course they're complete sickos and way above what what be considered good. Shaundeeb who has won the PokerStars Yearly TLB for the last two years is a really good example of something to aspire to. This guy puts in insane volume all will play anything froma $3r a $20 180 man mtt to the $200re-buy. His stats show a 57% roi over 13910 tournaments with an ABI of $77.
Try again! Sorry PL, silghtly immature private joke...
  9. Re: what? no InsideEdge tourneys this issue 60

is this the "paysafe" effect hitting home?
Put the tin hat down Morls ;) Freerolls are obviously a big part of what we do, but at IP we have always gone for quality rather than quantity. And hopefully you will agree there is still plenty of value in the mag just from the content. I don't remember the last time, and I expect it's just a one off. It was a very short issue (less than 3 weeks), everyone is credit crunched and it's just one of those things. We should have a big new promotion that I am really excited about starting next issue though. I will keep you informed.
  10. Re: Shoving with any Ace - FAO Slapdash Here is Aaron's response in full... Hi Jeremy, While it is true that Ace rag has an advantage over suited connectors when our opponent is holding a hand like K-J or an over pair to our suited connectors, suited connectors hold an advantage over two hands that have a tendency for calling small-medium sized all ins more often than a hand like K-J, the big ace and the pocket pair smaller than our suited connectors. Ideally, when we are pushing with suited connectors, we don't want a call but if we get a call it is important that our hand not be dominated and that we have live cards so to speak. So think of it is this way. What hands are most likely to call a 10 times the big blind first to act all in move. Hands like K-J or Q-J have a hard time doing so because they know that if they are up against an ace that they have to improve and unless they have a lot of chips, 10 times the big blind is a significant portion of their stack. Hands that are most likely to call are big aces and pocket pairs. Against big aces, suited connectors have a distinct advantage over Ace rag. For example, A-J will win 71.2% of the time against A-4 but will only win 58.3% of the time against 8-7 suited. Against pocket pairs smaller than the suited connectors, the Ace rag is again at a disadvantage. A-4 against pocket 6's will only win 31.1% of the time while 8-7s will win 49.3%. The only time Ace rag is at an advantage is when the opponent holds a pocket pair bigger than the suited connectors and even then the advantage is small. A-4 against pocket kings will win 29.8% of the time while 8-7 suited will win 22.6% of the time. This also isn't to say that I won't push with Ace rag, I am just saying that if I am in this type of situation that I prefer to push with suited connectors if given the choice. It's close, that's for sure, and it's probably more a matter of personal preference based on my experiences playing poker (losing multiple times with ace rag and having better success with suited connectors) than anything. Aaron

  11. Re: Shoving with any Ace - FAO Slapdash

Guess who has the star letter in this months issue ;) I appreciate that there wasnt a lot of space for a reply, however am far from convinced by Aaron Hendrix response :unsure Basically the argument was that slapdash' ranges were "a little off the mark". I think it would be very good if we could put a couple of specific hands to Aaron and find out what his range is for shoving :unsure
Yeah we didn't have space to print the full reply. I will dig it out and post it on here. I think the main point is that while the range is probably solid as a likely calling range it is probably more weighted towards Aces. In other words more people are more likely to call you with a big Ace. They are not equally likely to call with KJ as they are with AJ. If that makes sense. I'm very tired and not very well today so forgive me if my brain is addled...
  12. Re: Shoving with any Ace - FAO Slapdash Interesting debate guys, and I won't dare to try and talk on behalf of my strategy guys. But I will see if I can get Aaron and Stephen to comment on this for you, and yes by all means send in a letter. You may well get a free chip set for your troubles... I would say, however, this debate depends a LOT on the calling range you assign to your opponent(s). 13. Re: The Mole

FFS do I have to spell it out for you:eek Think live games are the way ahead for you mate-why do you think so many top players are playing less and less on line these days?
Umm. What? The reverse is pretty much the case....
  14. Re: Des Francais!!

Where have they all come from on Boss? Used to be that there were hardly any on Boss' date=' but the last week or so they've made up about 50% of the tables (on the coolers at least) -has a new (french) skin signed up to Boss or something?[/quote'] This piqued my interest so I had a quick look at the IPN rooms and it seems the only French one of note is Betclick.com. This is reportedly one of the biggest online gaming sites for french punters. I would guess they have recently run a big promotion or advertising campaign....
  15. Re: Inside Poker Mag - Poker God 3 - $10,000 Caribbean Cruise Hello All Sorry I haven't been as active as usual on these threads, but I have been busy with a lot of other work stuff and someone else in the office has been dealing with this PokerGod series. Alan. I've sent you an email, but the short answer is there was indeed a cock-up. Unfortunately when they tried to add you they couldn't, and this wasn't queried with us to double check. I can only apologise for this and, although it's not the same, I will send you out a chip set and some other goodies from the office as a gesture on our part. As regards the dates. The PokerGod 2 series had an online final held two days following the final freeroll so this was just following a similar format. AFAIK all players were notified via email and the date was posted in our forum. But I admit we should have put the final dates in the mag. Sorry about that. I'd like to think I've always been stand-up and honest with you guys on here, but let me know if you think this is just more of the 'usual crap' Cheers Alun p.s. Just had a look back through the thread and I can see some people were talking about emailing me. I did indeed get these emails and sent them on to the guy who was dealing with this series who was always quick at getting things sorted out such as the prize package in the grand final. But apologies if anyone felt ignored.

  16. Re: Ladbrokes Ladbrokes has always used Microgaming poker software, but has operated its own stand-alone network until now. It was more common back in the early days of online poker when Ladbrokes started their room to operate as a stand-alone than it is now. Also by just using the software, rather than the network, it allowed Ladbrokes to be completely free of US players. You would only be playing against other Ladbrokes punters. What they are doing from next year I believe is joining the network for tournaments and higher-stakes cash games where they want increased player numbers.

  17. Re: pokergod3 w hill sun 20th It does appear there has been a small visit from Mr Cock-up with this one. Will try and sort out the lines of communication, but hopefully no harm done and we'll try and squeeze a PLO event in before the end of the series. Gl all Plers still in.
