  1. Re: iPoker and winning players It's a major problem for sites on a network. Look at it from, say, Paddy Power's perspective. They run a sportsbook where their players like to play poker. Those players go on the poker site, lose all their money to say someone on Titan Poker and that money is gone from Paddy Power forever. It's not going to be bet on a horse race or played in the casino. I think GaF misses the point a bit. A network provider should be a third-party service provider. It should be making sure the software is solid, providing more functionality and dealing with fraud and collusion. It should not be in the business of recruiting new players. What has happened with all the rakeback offers is sites in networks have simply got into the business of stealing players off each other. These fines are a way of counteracting that. It's no good for any of us if the poker sites are simply trying to recruit the sharks from each other and nobody is bringing the fish into the party. It's a business at the end of the day. For them and for us. And it's short sighted to think we don't all depend on a bit of co-operation to make it work. I'm not defending the fines, or iPoker, I'm just explaining a bit how it works.

  2. Re: IP Closing :lol :lol :lol :lol Yeah Jen Harman didn't know what hit her. Cheers mate. Feeling is mutual. And yeah I will, erm, look forward to it :eek

  3. Re: IP Closing Yep he's fine. Moved on to bigger and better things in a different department within Dennis. His move was not related to IP, the timing was just a conicidence.

  4. Re: IP Closing No I joined at the end of 2005 as the poker and casino 'expert'!! :loon Then I got a quick promotion when the editor left to join the Sportsman. I did used to read it back in those days though when I was editing another mag. It's amazing to think that was the only place you could read about poker back then....

  5. Morning Gents I started writing this in the poker mags thread then realised it was becoming a thread hijack so I moved it here for the 1-3 people that might be interested in hearing what I have to say :tongue2 Thanks for all the kind words, and in particular to Martyn. I think I might print that out and show it to my mum! :lol Don't worry about me, I'm still in gainful employment, but I won't lie it's a real dissapointment to be closing IP. I loved working on it and I was hugely proud of it as a title and the team there were easily some of the most talented people I have worked with. But market conditions will prevail and IP will now carry on as a trade title InsidePoker Business, with PokerPlayer as our consumer title. It's a reflection of the mature UK poker market, and I will be staying on to do the business title and a few other projects at Dennis. Our old team will be helping me out with those with the exception of Paul Cheung who is moving to PokerPlayer as features editor. Personal highlights are too many to mention, but having thanksgiving dinner with Ivey, and interviewing the great man at his home stand out. Also playing in Aruba, the WSOP and some top nights out at the GUKPT. And in all seriousness that trip to the WSOP with WASP, teaulc and VoJ and Jon Woodfield was one of them. They are all great lads, and it was a pleasure hanging out with them. And seeing a reader (Jon Woodfield) go really deep in a WSOP event after he won the seat in your freeroll is a great feeling. I felt like a proud dad. Sadly there will be no more IP freerolls or qualifiers, but I hope you've enjoyed them all over the years and got some value from them. PokerPlayer will still have plenty though and I should be around at various events in the UK next year so will maybe see some PL qualifiers there. Anyway enough self-serving sh*** from me. Good luck in your poker and I'll still be hanging around PL like a bad smell. Cheers Alun

  6. Re: Good news Congrats! I've never stayed at the Venetian, but everyone I know who has says the rooms are fantastic. I stayed at the Wynn this year for the WSOP and the room was really good. It's a great location and feels a bit classier than the Venetian imo and the restaurants there are superb. It's also right opposite the fashion show mall if you want to do some shopping, just try and walk her quickly past the Wynn shops!

  7. Re: Inside Poker GUKPT FR Leg 8 - 6th October Hello all Sorry for the delay. I was waiting for information to come back from BlueSQ before posting. It seems someone set the tournament up wrong, as noted in the payouts, so it was pulled by the network. Many apologies for this, but as you've noted it will still be going ahead tomorrow night They have now set up the tournament to run tomorrow night and should have informed anyone who took part of this. There will also be an apology and a message for anyone who logs in who took part. Many apologies for the inconvenience, but it was beyond our control. Good luck to everyone playing tomorrow! Cheers Alun

  8. Re: short stackers Nice to know Chris :) I will pass that along. It's a good read I think. Nade, you must have been reading over his shoulder (or telling him what to write). His analysis covers a lot of tactics and player types, but for a certain type of shorty he recommends doing just that! :clap

  9. Re: short stackers There are a lot of professional short stackers at the mid-stakes levels. Our resident six-max expert Alex Martin absolutely loathes them. He's written a really good article on beating them in the issue we're just putting to bed at the moment. A lot of them play to steal blinds, earn around 1bb/100 and earn money on rakeback. At least that is what Alex says. It's reducing poker to a more mathematical game and can be done easily over many many tables. Check out 2+2 for threads discussing optimal strategies. A lot of players find them very frustrating and you are starting to see more 50bb minimum tables as a result.

  10. Re: Akenhead On FIRE!!!!!!!!! Hmm. He's good no doubt, and The Camel knows more than me, but I'm always reluctant to make judgements without seeing the cards. It's safe to say Mr Mercier is running goooooooooood at the final table so far as well. When you combine insane, relentless agression with run goot then you are looking at a very dangerous player.

  11. Re: Inside Poker WSOPE FR Betfair No and it is something we are looking into. But it's less attractive to the poker sites as they are getting in front of fewer eyeballs. But yes I agree it would be a nice thing for regular readers and we are looking at it seriously. p.s. Before this gets into a big Q&A thing, can anyone who has suggestions or comments please PM me or email me at [email protected] rather than post on here. I don't really want to end up discussing commercial things or mag strategy in a public forum read by rival mag editors. Hi Jon! :)

  12. Re: Inside Poker WSOPE FR Betfair On a more serious note we do listen to these complaints, and we do listen to all the suggestions to get around it (words from the magazine, subscribers only etc). However, to-date we've not found another way of doing these freerolls that doesn't either have a big downside or is not practical to implement for the poker sites. As Winston Churchill said about democracy, password freerolls are the worst system apart from all the others that have been tried. I do think we go to greater lengths at Dennis than any other mag. We never leak the passwords out to boost numbers or publish it on our websites. And as soon as we find a forum that publishes them we take action to get them to stop. If you don't want to buy the mag fair enough, but we're not just a freeroll leaflet. There is LOT more to the mag than just freerolls. And IP is not given away free in casinos. Anyway, PL regulars all know how much we value your continued support and hope to keep seeing you in our freerolls. Any questions or suggestions please PM me as I'm always keen to hear them. Even from Brian ;) p.s. Please note also Betfair did kick out 400 or so non-UK players before the start. I should probably have asked for another clear out just before the event kicked off. My mistake. Sorry.

  13. Re: Inside Poker WSOPE FR Betfair

I have to agree here I used to buy all the magazines, now i get them free from casino's and the ones i cant get i dont bother with.:\ The added value of buying them isnt there anymore, with the majority of mags unable to sort out the increasing problems of non readers/foreigners getting into their suposedly exclusive readers events. I never bought the magazine/read the magazine or have any intention of doing so for the near future, but i got the password and played the game last night......that needs to be sorted asap as its not fair on genuine readers:ok
Noted. Good luck with claiming any future big prizes :tongue2
  14. Re: "Big" Online Buy-ins It's an interesting question this, and one that comes up time and time again. I think there is a more subtle grey area here than Billy is right/wrong. There are plenty of pros who would agree with you and plenty who wouldn't. And believe me I have asked a lot of them. If you have a defined 'style' of play and you are very good at it then you will struggle when the tournament structure/field does not allow you to play it. Take Phil Hellmuth in very deep-stacked events against good players, or some of the looser online pros in tournaments full of fish. But the very best players do not have a style of play. They play the players and the situations not the cards. Phil Ivey is a classic example. He sits down, plays a few hands, observes and adjusts his game to the table. JC Tran has said his best asset as a tournament pro is being 'able to adapt'. I totally understand what you are saying Billy, but perhaps it's a matter of adopting a slightly higher variance strategy, widening your range a little and value betting much lower strength hands. Even total fish have patterns (do they chase draws, call with mid pair and raise with top pair, overbet big hands etc etc). Very few players are totally random. I'm sure you are a very good player, but even the best players can afford to learn new tricks and ways of playing. Even the very very best. Poker is such a complex and unsolved game that the minute you stop learning you start losing. Good luck at the tables!

  15. Re: WSOP Main Event Day 1d was a sell out with hundreds of people turned away. The final total is 6,494, which is down about 400 on last year. Day 1a and 1b were very poorly attended partly because of July 4 weekend and partly because poker players never want to buy in until the last minute. I think some may reconsider this next year. Some top pros turned away so the story goes...

  16. Re: for those of you going to USA - link for the online visa I was in the states last week. Trust me. Everyone on the plane will still have to fill in the forms using a pen old school style. I think far too many people are not doing it online so they are still using the old system for now. But I would still do the online form to be safe. This was NYC rather than Vegas too, but I heard to same for the west coast.

  17. Re: Spending VPoints

I'm way too tight to spend that kind of money on upgrading. Actually it's not tight' date=' I just cannot bring myself mentally to spend that much more on a seat when there's another seat on the same plane for a fraction of the price - It's only 8 hours - I can put up with a bit of a squeeze for the sake of 8 hours - I'd much rather have an extra £500 out there to spend (lose ;) )[/quote'] It's only 8 hours now? Awesome! Them planes must go faster when you are on them :tongue2 Having done the economy dash to Vegas many times I'm with Mr Arca on this one. Although Chris Fergsuon told me he always flies economy and he's got a few quid so you are not alone there GaF.
