It is run on the Old Course at Cheltenham over a distance of 2 miles and 4½ furlongs (4,124 metres), and during its running there are fifteen fences to be jumped. It is a handicap race, and it is scheduled to take place each year in mid November. The event was first run in 1960, and it was originally sponsored by Mackeson's and known as the Mackeson Gold Cup. The race continued with this title until 1995, but since then it has had various different sponsors and consequently several title changes. It was backed by Murphy's from 1996, and by Thomas Pink from 2000. The present sponsor, >Paddy Power, has supported the race since 2003. The most successful trainer in the race is Martin Pipe, who achieved eight victories before his retirement in 2006. Of the seven winners he trained from 1996 to 2005, all except Shooting Light were owned by David Johnson

bowles10
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov My trends for last years renewal where i backed 2 horses including the winner Imperial Commander (updated in brackets) 2.35 Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase Its a difficult race at this stage of the season but horses that win this normally target the Gold Cup in March so the winner is normally a decent animal. Key trends Weights 11st 3lb & under 9/11 (last year 10st 7lb - now 10 from 12) Under 11st 6/11 (last year 10st 7lb - now 7 from 12) Age 6-8 8/11 (last year 7yo - now 9 from 12) 5yo 1/11 (now 1 from 12) debut for season 6/11 (now 7 from 12) 1 run or fewer that season 10/11 (now 11 from 12) Those that had run that season 1st or 2nd LTO 5/5 2nd season chasers 7/11 (now 8 from 12) Price 16/1 & under 10/11 (now 11 from 12) Favs 4/11 (now 4 from 12) Distance winners 9/11 (now 10 from 12) Distance or further 11/11 (now 12 from 12) C/D winners 9/11 (now 10 from 12) The key stat for me at Cheltenham is the course form with 9/11 being c/d winners & the price band of 16/1 & under 10 from 11. We are also looking at those having thier 1st run or just 1 run this season, if they have 1 run they must have finished 1st or 2nd. Vodka Bleu, Imperial Commander, Dont Push it, Stan, Maljimar all score highly on the above stats. Stan & Vodka Bleu are both 9 now which doesnt fit well into the age bracket & both are established chasers where we are looking for something preferably in thier 2nd season. Of all these Imperial Commander fits the stats so well. Best price 8/1 VC Bet I think you can also make a case for the favourite Silverburn off such a decent weight. I followed him throughout last year to the R&SA where the horse didnt stay the 3m round here but this is more up his street. 9/2 with VC bet is a very good price. Selections Imperial Commander 8/1 >Paddy Power (GP) Silverburn 9/2 VC Bet

fintron
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov Paddy Power Gold Cup Barbers Shop came out of this race last year and was subsequently backed in for the Gold Cup at the festival so it will be a race to keep an eye on again this year. Imperial Commander jumped them all into the ground last year to lift the trophy and Nigel Twiston-Davies has an interesting contender here in Ballyfitz, who landed a novices chase on the same card 12 months ago. He was unlucky to bump into a decent sort in Carruthers at Ascot thereafter and pulled up in the RSA chase when last seen, but his mark has edged back down as a result and he runs off 149 on his handicap debut for this. It wouldn't surprise me to see him go well but I think Shining Gale is slightly more interesting for Charlie Mann, who landed a valuable Grade two novice chase with Red Admiral at Wincanton recently. Shining Gale hacked up over course and distance in a novices chase twelve months ago and although fell at Kempton in the Grade 1 Feltham last December, bounched back to win at Warwick in lesser company in March. He has not really come up against some of the yardsticks that some of his rivals have, but the benefit of that he is let in on what looks quite a good mark here - 145. Most of his recent runs have come over 3m or 3m 1f, and he will proabably step back up to that trip in time given he has only had seven runs over fences. However, he has won three of those chases to date which seems respectable enough and over this 2m 5f trip he has managed one win and one place (hurdles). Last time out he ran in a listed chase behind The Last Derby and surprisingly raced from the rear of the field. He ran on to take third at the finish and overall it was a pleasing effort on what was his first run since April and considering he usually figures more prominently. Mann has said that he ideally wants the ground to soften for him to be at his best, but he has won on ground ranging from good to soft so there is a bit of versatility there and could go well at a price. 14/1 William Hill, 0.25 pt EW (4 places, 1/4 odds). Aykay1
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov Im with Fin on Shining Gale for this i think. Has the course form, which as we've ascertained, is important here and I was really impressed with his reappearance last weekend. He is highly rated by his trainer who was hopeful he would launch a challenge for the RSA Chase last season but he underachieved somewhat. I'm hopeful this could be the race for him to fulfuill his promise.

jtw1
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov taken from Sporting Life - Paddy Power Gold Cup - Antepost: Tarotino 6/1 Alan King's stable jockey Robert Thornton is hoping he can win the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham for the first time on Tarotino having finished third on Kandjar D'Allier in 2005 and second on Il Duce two years later. "He's been very good at home and although I've not ridden work on him, I've been told that he's been going well," said Thornton. "Schooling-wise I popped him over six to nine fences the other morning and he jumped very well as he always does. "Wayne Hutchinson rode him at Bangor as I had to go to Punchestown to ride one or two for Alan, but now this fellow's going for a bigger race. "Wayne was very pleased with him. He should have won his first race for us at Huntingdon, but his confidence has grown from there and hopefully he's still progressing. "We did consider the Summer Plate at Market Rasen for him, but his owner, Mr Webb, thought that we would go for the Paddy Power as it is more prestigious and in the proper jumping season - and he is a proper jumping man. "Two and a half miles is absolutely spot on for him and he wouldn't want it too soft. "Good or good to soft would be ideal and any slower is a minus. "He is definitely up there with Il Duce and Kandjar D'Allier and every bit as good as them. "I am going there pretty hopeful, but it's ironic that we've been begging for rain for racing and now we could do with it being dry this week! jtw1
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov Sporting Life - TRANQUIL GOING FOR GOLD Paddy Power Gold Cup - Antepost: Tranquil Sea 8/1 [url=http://www.sportinglife.com/racing/news] Leading fancy Tranquil Sea looks set to take his chance in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on Saturday. Edward O'Grady's Grade One-winning hurdler was largely disappointing in his first season over fences but there was much to like about his defeat of Joncol and Trafford Lad at the end of last month. The trainer is expecting his seven-year-ld to continue to progress and is looking forward to his weekend assignment. "It is likely that Tranquil Sea will go to the Paddy Power Gold Cup," said O'Grady. "We were delighted with his win at Naas last time. He has only won twice over fences so I would say that was his best run and, being a seven-year-old, I think it would be normal to expect some improvement from him. "He is well and we are looking forward to a nice run. He has been around Cheltenham before so that would not be a concern."

fintron
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov My previous bet in this, Shining Gale, is a NR for this but In a way I think it may be a blessing in disguise as I was quite keen on Ballyfitz anyway. In my previous write up I commented on Ballyfitz.. Imperial Commander jumped them all into the ground last year to lift the trophy and Nigel Twiston-Davies has another interesting contender here in Ballyfitz, who landed a novices chase on the same card 12 months ago. He was unlucky to bump into a decent sort in Carruthers at Ascot thereafter and pulled up in the RSA chase when last seen, but his mark has edged back down as a result and he runs off 149 on his handicap debut for this. It wouldn't surprise me to see him go well As I write one of the two remaining firms that have him priced up at 20/1 have snipped him into 16/1 - only Hills remain (and he is shorter than 21.0 on the exchanges), so I am taking that now with the market giving off the right noises and with him actually running off 146 for this - the previous mark quoted (149) was due to an error on Sporting Life. The yard is in good form at present, saddling up a winner down at Exeter this afternoon, and although riding plans have not been finalised, and Paddy Brennan could possibly ride Knowhere, I would be disappointed if he didn't favour this chaser that has often shown great promise and could go onto better things this season. 20/1 William Hill, 0.5 pt EW (4 places, 1/4 odds). jtw1
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov Sporting Life - Paddy Power Gold Cup Specials: Paul Nichols To Train The First And Second 33/1 [url=http://www.cheltenham.co.uk/] Paul Nicholls could launch a three-pronged assault on Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup as he bids to win the prestigious prize for the first time. Not many major races in the National Hunt season have eluded the Ditcheat handler but Cheltenham's competitive November handicap is one of them. This year he intends to saddle Chapoturgeon, winner of last season's Jewson Novices' Handicap Chase, dual course winner Poquelin and Tatenen. "The plan is for all three to run in the Paddy Power, but we'll see what the weather does during week and that could change things," said Nicholls. "We'll make a decision later in the week. Obviously Poquelin would not want it too soft, while Tatenen does want it soft. "Until Poquelin won the other day, I hadn't even thought of the Paddy Power - it was only the way he won that brought it into our minds. "Tatenen will only run if it's soft, while the plan was always for Chapoturgeon to go there first time out. "We'll look at the weather, but Ruby will ride Poquelin." Nigel Twiston-Davies saddled Imperial Commander to success in the race 12 months ago and is set to be double-handed this year with Ballyfitz and Knowhere. Assistant trainer Carl Llewellyn said: "At the moment the plan is to run both Knowhere and Ballyfitz. "Ballyfitz is making his first start of the season but he's a strong traveller and a pretty good horse on his day, so I could see him running a big race. "All his best form has been over further but I think the race suits horses who can stay well as they go such a good gallop and never let that pace drop - you need a horse whose going to get every yard. "I think you need a three-miler who has the pace to lay up over two and a half miles, very much like Imperial Commander who won the race last year. "Hopefully he can hold his position and then he'll stay on well up the hill." Knowhere was not disgraced when finishing third in the Old Roan Chase at Aintree on his latest outing, but Llewellyn feels the veteran is currently in the handicapper's grip. "Knowhere ran his usual good race at Aintree last time but he's not get any younger and his handicap mark isn't really dropping as he keeps running well enough to keep it up," Llewellyn continued. "It's always tough with a horse like him and you're open to a young horse coming along who is well handicapped. "But he's battle-hardened and always has a chance of running well in races like this." Il Duce is set to have his third run in the race having finished second in 2007 and fourth 12 months ago when trained by Alan King. He is now in the care of Renee Robeson, who said: "It's a big ask, but the owner wants to run. He likes Cheltenham, so he's ready to go. "I'm had him since he came in from his summer break in July. I wanted to run him before but it was too firm and I couldn't risk him. "I did have a nice race in mind to have one go before Saturday, but it was better to be safe than sorry." Robeson has booked 3lb-claiming conditional jockey Sam Jones for the ride.
RuleBritannia
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov On the chance that the ground will be soft, (not impossible), I have had 2pts E/W on According to Pete @ 25/1 Bet365 Essentially a 3 miler, but plenty in this field will not appreciate too much cut, and if it does come up soft or worse, then he will appreciate every bit of it. A genuine mud lover. 2m4f is on the sharp side for him, but he is guaranteed to be staying on towards the end, when plenty are dying. Taking the chance, due to the possibility of going soft. His figures on soft throughout career read... 3132314 and on heavy, 1341.
mileni4uk
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov Small bet on Knowhere @ 70.0 Betfair Not getting any younger, but I think he will get his ideal conditions on Saturaday. And with Our Vic top weight he will race off handy 11-5 which will be ideal. I hope Our Vic isn't withdrawn of course, because 70s is too big for the game Twiston-Davies horse. He beat Exotic Dancer on soft last year in the Old Roan. Also beat Our Vic at Cheltenham. These are all Grade 2 events. Of course many younger rivals are pontentially well handicapped for saturday, but with rain forecast I think Knowhere may have a fitness edge and will stay powerfully up the hill. I like his record over 2m4f .. 6 wins from 9 starts and 2 others are placed. Only once he's been out of the top three. Will need to be at the top of his game to have any chance of winning here, but should be a lot shorter price imo and racing knows bigger upsets than this. bowles10
Re: Key Race: Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase - Cheltenham - Sat 14th Nov just looked at my trends & likely to only have 2 or 3 qualifiers at most If Nicholls horses are fit they will take some beating but they are not well handicapped now. Poquelin & Tatenan would be interesting & any rain for the latter would see it having a real chance. Poquelin could be anything but its course form is excellent but is inexperienced over the distance & has struggled in big fields. One of the interesting runners is BIBLE LORD who represents decent ew value @ 20/1 Skybet The horse is a distance winner which is key. It has only had 1 run this season which it duly won also a good trend. It has winning form on both soft & decent ground. It has 2 placed efforts at Cheltenham in big fields (3rd of 17 & 4th of 22). Fell at the festival last year behind Something wells at the 5th fence. Has a 7lb penalty to overcome which may prove difficult but should be thereabouts. Another is BALLYFITZ available at 16/1 Bet365. Hails from last years winning stable of Nigel Twiston Davies. Has won over further which also is a good trend here. Loves the course with figures of U,1,2,1,1,2,P. Ran away with a novice chase here at the meeting last year & reminds me a bit of last years winner Imperial Commander. Can see this one leading round the turn & will be there to be caught. Will stay up the hill no problems. Hopefully Paddy Brennan wil ride & the weights wont go up. Can win off OR 146. 2 ante post bets BIBLE LORD 1pt ew @ 20/1 Skybet BALLYFITZ 1.5pts ew @ 16/1 Bet365 May back them again on the day as well but just can't miss those prices. Time will tell whether baseing a selection on a race in which the horse fell is the wisest policy, but Pop was running pretty well at the Festival in March in the Freddie Williams Festival Plate behind Something Wells. Had he stood up....who knows. Throw in Henry Daley's poor record at Cheltenham, and Pop should be one of the first to put a line through. But off 138 Pop has more than an outsiders' chance of making the frame.
