5.50 I backed Cape Vale on his debut at Thirsk just because he was a half brother to the useful Moss Vale, and he won at big odds, so I've kept an eye on him since. He's eaten into the profits of that day the last few times I've backed him and hasn't won any of his last four, but there could still be more to come from him. Most of his runs have come over 6f, and he has only attempted todays 5f once in the past, when he finished 4th of 16 at Thirsk (btn 2.5l). He was closely matched with Hamish McGonagall that day, and that rival looks a sprinter on the upgrade and has won twice since off 84 and then 91. Although he's yet to win over this distance, breeding suggests he should be okay given that Moss Vale won a few times over 5f and, even in defeat, ran some crackers over the minimum trip. Both of his wins came in small field sizes (12) and although he was beaten in a field of 12 at Haydock, perhaps the 7f was stretching him a bit. Only 12 go to post here and although he is 7 lbs above his last winning mark, he ran well off 83 at Haydock over 6f when he was only defeated by a head. 3lbs higher today, he gets my vote. 6/1.
