Guinness Premiership Final

Recommended Posts

Should be a cracking game today. The script seems to have ben written for Lawrence Dallaglio to lift the trophey in his last ever game but it think the tigers just might spoil his party. Took all this off the BBC website. Wasps prop Phil Vickery has recovered from a knee injury and will start Saturday's Guinness Premiership final at Twickenham. Riki Flutey takes the place of the injured Danny Cipriani at fly-half, while captain Lawrence Dallaglio will play his final game before retiring. Leicester have named the same side that beat Gloucester in the semi-final. Prop Martin Castrogiovanni misses out through injury but Julian White plays after a one-week ban for stamping. Dallaglio, who has led the club to four English league titles and two Heineken Cups, says he does not want the emotion of his retirement to overshadow the team's efforts to win their first Premiership for three years. "It's the same situation for me as for any other player - it's the last game of the season," he insisted. "It doesn't feel any different. It might do in September, but certainly not at the moment. "It's a club that won before I got here and a club that will win long after I'm gone." Flutey's place in the centre is taken by Dominic Waldouck who pairs up with Fraser Waters, who also makes his last appearance for Wasps on Saturday, having played 217 games in his 10 years at the club. In the absence of the injured Tom Voyce, Josh Lewsey moves to the wing, with Mark Van Gisbergen coming in at full back. To have Vickery back is a huge boost for Wasps who start as favourites going into Saturday's game. "I'm delighted that Phil Vickery has come through a week's training and contact to be fit for Saturday - it helps to make up for the loss of Danny Cipriani and Tom Voyce," said Wasps director of rugby Ian McGeechan. "We are obviously delighted to have made it to the final, particularly from such an inauspicious beginning in September and October. "It will be a great occasion. Wasps versus Leicester is always a major encounter, but to be playing this one out in front of a record-breaking full house at Twickenham will be very exciting." For Leicester Marco Wentzel and Ben Kay start at lock, with Boris Stankovich, Mefin Davies and White named in the front row. An all-international backline features Irishman Geordan Murphy at full back, Alesana Tuilagi of Samoa on the left wing and All Black Aaron Mauger at inside centre, with England caps Tom Varndell, Dan Hipkiss, Andy Goode and Harry Ellis completing the line-up. The Tigers are yet to bring any silverware back to Welford Road and Leicester coach Marcelo Loffreda is under pressure to deliver. He said: "It will be important for us all at the club if we can come back with a trophy. "With wins over Harlequins and Gloucester, the confidence of the team has changed in the last three weeks. Before those wins, our mental state was not as good as it is now. "We are in good shape. The last few weeks have given us a real push forward. We know all about the rivalry with Wasps and we are looking forward to it. "Wasps are a great team in this sort of situation. They are full of outstanding players and we must have conviction in our own principles and carry out our game plan." Saturday's encounter will be just the latest chapter in what has been the defining rivalry in English rugby union over recent years. "Nine titles between us and four Heineken Cups - I think that says it all," said Dallaglio, who added he was sure it would be a "very tasty match". "Whatever we do we seem to come up against each other all the time. Every time there's a big match the usual suspects seem to come to the top and in the last 10 years it does seem to be Wasps and Leicester," he added. "We know what to expect. They're the champions, let's not forget that, but we'll be trying to win a trophy we haven't won for a little while now."

Wasps: Mark Van Gisbergen, Paul Sackey, Fraser Waters, Dominic Waldouck, Josh Lewsey, Riki Flutey, Eoin Reddan, Tim Payne, Raphael Ibanez, Phil Vickery, Simon Shaw, Tom Palmer, James Haskell, Tom Rees, Lawrence Dallaglio (capt). Replacements: Joe Ward, Pat Barnard, Richard Birkett, Joe Worsley, Mark McMillan, Jeremy Staunton, John Hart Leicester: Geordan Murphy, Tom Varndell, Dan Hipkiss, Aaron Mauger, Alesana Tuilagi, Andy Goode, Harry Ellis, Boris Stankovich, Mefin Davies, Julian White, Marco Wentzel, Ben Kay, Martin Corry (capt), Ben Herring, Jordan Crane. Replacements:Ben Kayser, Marcos Ayerza, Richard Blaze, Tom Croft, Christophe Laussucq, Sam Vesty, Ayoola Erinle This should be a very close match with wasps just favourites. The injury to Danny Cipriani is a massive loss for Wasps. He has had a fantastic season and is one of the main reasons they are in the final. Tom Voyce also injured will be another big loss. Mark Van Gisbergen in at full back imo could be a weakness that tigers could attack. Coming forward he is a pretty good player but defensively he can look a bit dodgy sometimes. A few high balls aimed at him by Goode and things could be interesting! Wasps have had to make to many changes to there back line for my liking, so i will take Leicester on the handicap +1 @ evens with bet365 .
