working out the tote ?

just a few quick questions. (1) how do the tote work out the win, and place money you see after every race. e.g 9.00 clonmel

• Tote Win : €7.10
• Tote Place : €2.60, €2.40, €1.50
• Tote Exacta (15-12) : €46.10

(2) i have been trying out a system for the last couple of weeks, regarding placed horses on betfair. my question is, due to the fact that i cant get to a computer to find out the "place" price before every race. Can i use the tote place as shown above for my p/l of the system. would it be a fair reflection of the odds that i would get on betfair, for the place and if not, what can i use to reflect the betfair "place" odds

Re: working out the tote ? I'm not sure there is anything you can use. Under certain circumstances the place market on betfair can seem short, when it is actually fair. In a maiden where they go 16 bar three you will never get anywhere near a 1/5 of the odds of any of the front three. Odds on shot's rivals are always 'under the odds' to be placed. With 7 or less runners you get more value. Odds on shots are usually much bigger than a 1/4 of their odds. A 1/2 on shot is NEVER 1/8 to be placed in these instances for example. Also we have the NR problems, where betfair pay out on the amount DECLARED. If a 8 runner field is cut up to 5 runners then obviously this has a HUGE impact. I know this isn't helping, sorry. The race in question for example, I really don't think you'd get 2.6 a place the winner on betfair. I hardly touch the place markets. I'm struggling to give you an alternative.
