Re: Hyundai A-league Round 16 Preview: Wellington Phoenix v Perth Glory Thursday, 6 December 2007 Date: Friday December 7 Kick-off (local time): 7.30pm Venue: Westpac Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 1 (SKY Sport 2 in NZ) Radio coverage: The Radio Network 1035AM (Wellington), 6PR 882AM, SportFM 90.5FM (both Perth) Head-to-head Two league meetings: Wellington - 2 wins Previous meeting Perth 0 Wellington 1 (Members Equity Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 11, November 2007) Past five results Wellington: Win - Loss - Draw - Draw - Loss Perth: Loss - Win - Loss - Draw - Win Analysis David Mitchell begins his career as Perth's permanent head coach with a trip to face a Wellington side the Glory has never beaten and without his on-field lieutenant Simon Colosimo. Former coach Ron Smith's fate at Perth was sealed after the club stumbled to a 1-0 home defeat against the Phoenix, a dispiriting loss which plunged the Western Australians five points adrift at the foot. Mitchell, appointed in a caretaker capacity after Smith's exit, has since led Perth to two victories and one draw in four Hyundai A-League matches - including last weekend's 3-1 win over champion Melbourne - and this week agreed terms on a deal until the end of next season with the Glory having slipped ahead of bottom-placed Wellington on goal difference. However, Mitchell will be without Colosimo for Friday's clash at Westpac Stadium after the captain tore his hamstring in the second-half against the Victory. The Qantas Socceroos midfielder, like Stan Lazaridis, is not expected to return to action until after Christmas. Colosimo's enforced absence also unsettles Perth's midfield balance with him and dead ball specialist Mitchell Prentice having struck up a decent understanding over recent outings. Prentice is one six players to have started every match in Mitchell's charge after being in and out of the starting XI under Smith. Another is Queensland-born right-back Jimmy Downey, who could keep that 100 per cent record going after being named in the Glory's 16-man travelling party despite being removed at half-time last Sunday after 'tweaking' a hamstring. Downey keeping his place could allow last week's emergency centre half Jamie Harnwell to retain his position upfront although Jerry Karpeh is chasing a spot in attack too. Ex-Qantas Socceroos defender Hayden Foxe is also a chance to make his long-awaited Hyundai A-League bow after snapping medial ligaments in pre-season. Colosimo's counterpart, Phoenix captain Ross Aloisi, has been rated by coach Ricki Herbert as a doubt. Aloisi is still affected by the back injury which has ruled him out of the past fortnight but Richard Johnson does return from a thigh problem. Meanwhile, Perth's Wellington-born winger Leo Bertos will come face-to-face with a host of international team-mates such as goalkeeper Glen Moss, Jeremy Christie, Tony Lochhead, Tim Brown and Shane Smeltz after Herbert named seven current All Whites in his 16-man squad. Wellington players will wear black armbands during the match in memory of Phoenix supporter Michael Webby who died on his way home from watching the LA Galaxy exhibition match last weekend. Re: Hyundai A-league Round 16 Preview: Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets Thursday, 6 December 2007 Sydney FC v Newcastle Jets Date: Friday December 7 Kick-off (local time): 8.00pm Venue: Sydney Football Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 3 (SKY Sport 2 in NZ) Radio coverage: Coast FM 96.3FM (Central Coast) Head-to-head 10 league meetings: Sydney - 4 wins, Newcastle - 2 wins, 4 draws Previous meeting Newcastle 0 Sydney 1 (EnergyAustralia Stadium, Hyundai A-League round 11, November 2007) Past five results Sydney: Win - Win - Draw - Draw - Draw Newcastle: Loss - Loss - Draw - Draw - Win Analysis The Hyundai A-League's sharpest shooter goes head-to-head with one of his closest rivals on Friday night at SFS when seven-goal Joel Griffiths lines up against Sydney's six-goal striker Alex Brosque. Griffiths overtook Brosque last Friday when he nodded home a stoppage time winner in Queensland to reinvigorate Newcastle's prospects of a top two finish after the club's month-long barren spell. Not that the on-song 28-year-old Qantas Socceroos forward was enduring a personal drought. His goals have almost single-handedly catapulted the Jets into finals contention with his injury time strike against the Roar his sixth in the past eight rounds. What's more, fellow forward Mark Bridge returns to domestic action this week after injuring ankle ligaments a fortnight ago on duty for the Qantas Australia under-23s in North Korea. Brosque enjoyed an enforced weekend's rest after Sydney's derby meeting with the Central Coast Mariners was postponed until later this month due to a waterlogged pitch. The former Queensland star has proven his goalscoring credentials this year - including netting twice in his last match against LA Galaxy - although it has now been six weeks since his last Hyundai A-League goals, a first-half brace in the round 10 defeat of the Mariners. Griffiths and Brosque also share similarly high all-time scoring rates at national league level. The Newcastle man has scored 66 goals from 234 appearances at national league level so far at an average of one goal for every 3.5 appearances. Meanwhile, Brosque has recorded 33 goals in 125 national league matches for an average of one goal for every 3.8 appearances. Brazilian import Patrick is still an estimated two weeks away from his full return from knee surgery while fellow striker Adam Casey could still play again this season - if the inaugural champion makes the finals series. For Newcastle, Stephen Laybutt is back in contention after a ban while Adam Griffiths is walking the tightrope having picked up his sixth caution of an impressive debut season in Brisbane. Sydney, still unbeaten under coach John Kosmina, will be looking for a clean sweep over its NSW rival after a pair of 1-0 victories this season. Squads Sydney FC 1.Clint BOLTON (gk), 2.Iain FYFE, 3.Nikolas TSATTALIOS, 4.Mark RUDAN, 6.Tony POPOVIC (captain), 7.Robbie MIDDLEBY, 8.Ruben ZADKOVICH, 9.David ZDRILIC, 10.Steve CORICA, 11.Brendon SANTALAB, 13.Ben VIDAIC, 14.Alex BROSQUE, 15.Terry McFLYNN, 16.Mark MILLIGAN, 20.Ivan NECEVSKI (gk), 21.Adam BIDDLE, 23.Ufuk TALAY, 28.Michael BRIDGES Newcastle Jets 1.Ante COVIC (gk), 2.Adam GRIFFITHS, 3.Jade NORTH (captain), 5.Stuart MUSIALIK, 6.Andrew DURANTE, 8.Matt THOMPSON, 9.Joel GRIFFITHS, 10.Denni, 11.Tarek ELRICH, 13.Adam D’APUZZO, 14.Jobe WHEELHOUSE, 18.Noel SPENCER, 19.Mark BRIDGE, 20.Ben KENNEDY (gk), 21.Mario JARDEL, 23.Jason HOFFMAN, 27.Stephen LAYBUTT WRITTEN BY: MARC FOX(sportal) TAKEN FROM A-LEAGUE.COM.AU

Re: Hyundai A-league Round 16 Sydney Sydney are undefeated under Kosmina and i thin that will contnue here. Newcastle are a workmanlike team but they don't have the flair that Sydney possesses and in order to win this type of game, its a team more likely to be Sydney rather than Newcastle that prevails. They already have two 1-0 wins over them so far.

The rain has finaly stopped here, however the field will be very very slopy. Even if it was sunny and hot these two teams would have problems scoring. I will keep you updated on the weather and team news locky. :ok

Re: Hyundai A-league Round 16 0-0 at halftime. So far so good :hope. There was only 1 real chance in the whole half and boy was it a golden one. In the 33rd minute Brosque made a terrific run down the left hand side and squared it to MICHEAL BRIDGES with what seemed to be a open goal. However BRIDGES hit it straight and COVIC came out of the clouds to just get a finger on it to save it. World Class save but should of been 1-0.

Re: Hyundai A-league Round 16 Preview: Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United Thursday, 6 December 2007 Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United Date: Saturday December 8 Kick-off (local time): 7.00pm Venue: Telstra Dome TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 1 (SKY Sport 2 in NZ) Radio coverage: SEN1116 (Melbourne), Fresh FM 92.7FM (Adelaide) Head-to-head 11 league meetings: Adelaide - 5 wins, Melbourne - 4 wins, 2 draws Previous meeting Adelaide 4 Melbourne 1 (Hindmarsh Stadium, Hyundai A-League round eight, October 2007) Past five results Melbourne: Loss - Draw - Loss - Draw - Loss Adelaide: Loss - Loss - Draw - Draw - Win Analysis Former Victory shot-stopper Eugene Galekovic will be hoping to repair his new club's Telstra Dome reputation on his and Adelaide United's first returns to Melbourne since the club's grand final mauling last February. Galekovic, who signed for Adelaide last month after two-and-a-half seasons in Melbourne, was an unused Victory substitute that day but watched from the bench as Archie Thompson and co. fired six goals past new team-mate Daniel Beltrame. Beltrame's thigh tear in round 10 prompted Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar to sound out the Melbourne No.2 about a switch to Hindmarsh and although it took a month of trying, Galekovic helped his new employer to its first win with him between the posts last Friday in Wellington. His mid-season switch could prove to be a prudent move with some Adelaide players this week suggesting that a Reds win would dump the Hyundai A-League champion from this year's playoffs race. But that might be a little premature with Adelaide's embattled starting line-up once again undergoing extensive changes with two of the last round's defensive stalwarts - Milan Susak and Isyan Erdogan - unavailable through suspension. Vidmar will also give late fitness tests to Ange Costanzo (corked thigh), Cassio (hamstring) and Jason Spagnuolo (knee) while Bruce Djite and Bobby Petta could make welcome returns after long-term ankle and calf injuries. Defender Robert Cornthwaite does definitely come back into the squad after a one-match ban. For Melbourne, Steve Pantelidis is suspended after accumulating four yellow cards but former VPL central defender Steven Pace has recovered from a torn calf and looms as a like-for-like replacement. Pace's return would allow captain Kevin Muscat - back from a one-match ban himself - to be restored to central midfield where he is expected to play alongside Grant Brebner and Leigh Broxham. Remarkably, Muscat has never been on a losing side in all national league and Qantas Socceroo matches in which he has scored at least one goal, an incredible sequence stretching back to December 1993 when he netted his first goal for South Melbourne. Leandro and Evan Berger are also promoted to Ernie Merrick's extended 18-man squad but the game comes too early for new signing Nick Ward. Squads Melbourne Victory 1.Michael THEOKLITOS (gk), 2. Re: Hyundai A-league Round 16 Preview: Queensland Roar v Central Coast Mariners Thursday, 6 December 2007 Queensland Roar v Central Coast Mariners Date: Sunday December 9 Kick-off (local time): 6.00pm Venue: Suncorp Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 2 (SKY Sport 2 in NZ) Radio coverage: Coast FM 96.3FM (Central Coast) Head-to-head Eight league meetings: Queensland - 2 wins, Central Coast - 1 win, 5 draws Previous meeting Central Coast 0 Queensland 1 (Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium, Hyundai A-League round eight, October 2007) Past five results Queensland: Win - Win - Win - Draw - Loss Central Coast: Loss - Win - Win - Win - Draw Analysis Craig Moore, Andrew Packer, Tom Pondeljak and Nigel Boogaard are all possible returnees for the heavyweight clash between the league leading Central Coast Mariners and second-placed Queensland Roar at Suncorp Stadium. However, Central Coast pair John Hutchinson and Sasho Petrovski are serving suspensions carried over from last weekend's postponed fixture against Sydney FC while Roar winger Michael Zullo (thigh) is also unavailable. Queensland spurned a chance to be positioned to overtake the Mariners at the top of the table by throwing away a deserved draw against the Jets last Friday. Joel Griffiths headed home an injury time winner to end the Roar's eight-match unbeaten run. Danny Tiatto played at left-back in the previous round but could switch back into central midfield following Moore's return from a calf strain. Josh McCloughan and Andrew Packer will most likely battle it out for a start at full-back. Strikers Ante Milicic and Tahj Minniecon are also in contention as coach Frank Farina delays naming his 15-man squad ahead of Sunday's kick-off. Boogaard would have missed the cancelled game against Sydney because of concussion while Pondeljak was scratched because of a groin injury but the extended rest has paid dividends for the Mariners pair. They will undergo fitness tests on Friday to determine if they are fit to travel. Twenty-nine points was enough to claim a top-four finish last season while it took 31 points for Newcastle to make the finals in the first Hyundai A-League season. A second win of the year at Suncorp Stadium for the Central Coast will take Lawrie McKinna's side onto 30 points. A rehearsed corner kick routine led to Adam Kwasnik's second-half winner when the sides met in Brisbane in early September. However, Queensland's form has improved from the early stages of the season to the point Farina will be aiming to secure his 50th victory as coach at national league level after adding 10 victories at the helm of the Roar to his previous results at the Brisbane Strikers (23 wins) and Marconi (16). 1.Liam REDDY (gk), 2.Andrew PACKER, 4.Craig MOORE (captain), 5.Josh McCLOUGHAN, 6.Stuart McLAREN, 8.Massimo MURDOCCA, 9.Simon LYNCH, 10.
