ads25
Re: A-League Round 1 - Perth vs Newcastle (Sun 25th Aug) In season 2007/08 we will trial having an individual thread for each of the 4 weekly A-League matches. Last season with the one thread it got pretty hectic since games are spread out over 3-4 days and people posting live score updates. If successful it will remain this way, if not we will revert back to the way we had it last year. :ok

ads25
Re: A-League Round 1 - Perth vs Newcastle (Sun 25th Aug) Preview: Perth Glory v Newcastle Jets Date: Sunday August 26 Kick-off (local time): 3.00pm Venue: Members Equity Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 2 (SKY Sport 2 in NZ) Radio coverage: 6PR 882AM, SportFM 90.5FM (Perth), ABC 1233AM (Newcastle) Head-to-head Six league meetings: Perth - 4 wins, Newcastle - 1 win, 1 draw Previous meeting Newcastle 0 Perth 1 (Port Macquarie Regional Stadium, Pre-Season Cup round one, July 2007) Past five results Perth: Win - Draw - Win - Win - Loss Newcastle: Loss - Win - Loss - Win - Draw Analysis Life after Johnny Warren Medallist Nick Carle begins for the Newcastle Jets with a daunting first-up trip to Members Equity Stadium and a clash with Pre-Season Cup finalist Perth Glory. Ron Smith's complete overhaul of the Glory squad during the off-season has seen his side become more resilient defensively and offer real potency in attack, changes which look like making last season's seventh-placed finisher the most improved side in the competition. Defenders Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Dino Djulbic have already proved two of Smith's smarter acquisitions while speedy striker Nikita Rukavytsya is a real handful in attack. Rukavytsya scored twice during Perth's impressive Pre-Season Cup run. As well as enjoying a fine recent sequence of results, Perth also has the better head-to-head record against the Jets. Indeed, Newcastle has got the better of the Glory just once in the league and not since November 2005. Coach Gary van Egmond might hand a league debut to the Brazilian recruited as Carle's direct replacement - new No10 Denni Rocha dos Santos - with Argentine left-winger Jorge Drovandi also in line for his first Jets start. Denni and Drovandi played in an intra-club hit-out last weekend, although marquee recruit Mario Jardel is some way short of full fitness and stays behind in Newcastle to continue strength and conditioning work. While Jardel continues to build towards his Hyundai A-League bow, the goalscoring responsibilities will fall to Joel Griffiths and Mark Bridge who scored 14 times between them last season. In the previous league meeting between Newcastle and Perth last January, Griffiths twice found the net in injury time to salvage a draw for the Jets while he has also scored three goals in pre-season. Bridge missed the Qantas Olyroos clash with Iraq through suspension, however under-23 team-mates Troy Hearfield and Stuart Musialik must be rated as doubtful starters after a hectic schedule of training and travel. Musialik played the entire 90 minutes in draining conditions in midweek. Glory midfielder Billy Celeski was also ruled out of making the trip with the under-23s because of an adductor strain but is included in the Perth squad alongside defender David Tarka who has overcome a calf problem and teenager Jimmy Downey. Beejayville
Re: A-League Round 1 - Perth vs Newcastle (Sun 25th Aug) CURRENT ODDS Perth Glory $1-85 Draw $3-40 Newcastle Jets $4-00 (Centrebet) Perth Glory $1-85 Draw $3-30 Newcastle Jets $4-20 (Sportingbet) Odds are probably about right considering Perth's form pre season, they have been very good, including a runner up to Adelaide in the pre season Cup. The Jets are a capable side thoiguh, well they were last season, and they are out to very good odds in a two horse race. It is worth noting that Perth Glory do not lose many games at home when they are played during the day in the middle of the afternoon. Beejayville
Re: A-League Round 1 - Perth vs Newcastle (Sun 25th Aug) Perth Glory vs Newcastle Jets Big game over in the west today where Perth Glory take on the Jets. Perth have recruited well by signing Nikolai Topor-Stanley and Dino Djulbic who have already proven they will be valuable inclusions to the home side. Striker Nikita Rukavytsya looks a real livewire with plenty of pace and he will be very hard to contain for the Jets. The Glory look very strong when you add Colosimo and Harnwell into the equation, and Bertos and Tomich are capable goal scorers. At home last season the Glory only lost 2 games and that was against rampant Melbourne and an in form Queensland Roar. The Jets have only beaten Perth once in their A League history and the home side has a tremendous record against them. Perth are coming of a very good pre season where they were runners up in the pre season Cup. Newcastle are going to struggle to cover the loss of Nick Carle who has left for Turkey but they still have some matchwinners in Joel Griffiths and Mark Bridge who are very good on their day. New Captain Jade North is quality and new recruits Denni and Drovandi should play their first game for the Jets. European golden boot winner Jardel looks set to miss today as he is not quite ready. Perth's recent form indicates they are up at the moment and with the inclusion of some pace in their team and the fact that they are at home in the mid afternoon Perth sun they should be able to get the points here. This game also has the potential for a few goals so I plan to take the over 2.5 goals for an added interest. Perth Glory to WIN @ $1-85 Over 2.5 goals @ $1-

Beejayville
Re: A-League Round 1 - Perth vs Newcastle (Sun 25th Aug) Fairly lack lustre game and Newcastle Jets had the best chances but they failed to take them. Very ordinary effort by the home team to be honest and both of these sides are going to languish down the bottom if today's form is any indication.
