Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) In season 2007/08 we will trial having an individual thread for each of the 4 weekly A-League matches. Last season with the one thread it got pretty hectic since games are spread out over 3-4 days and people posting live score updates. If successful it will remain this way, if not we will revert back to the way we had it last year. :ok

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) G'day fellas, Going to Sydney v CC on Friday night, cannot wait! :D The early rounds of the A-league are going to be quite unpredictable imo as most sides have undergone many changes during the off-season. With regard to Friday Night's match, I think Sydney will put in a big effort in front of their home crowd, with Juniniho lifting the side. Of course, it should be noted that I am slightly (;)) biased towards Sydney. 2-0 to Sydney is my prediction. Juniniho and Brosque to score. Good luck all.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) :welcome Cool and best of luck with Sydney Friday night :ok Should be a great game to start the A League season. The Mariners pre season form has been fairly handy and they always give Sydney a run for thier money. It's going to be good to see Juninho run around in the A League and I hope he goes well.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Last Pre Season game for the Mariners The Central Coast Mariners scored a morale boosting 5-0 win over Oceanic challengers New Caledonia at Budgewoi’s Frank Millington Oval last weekend which will give them great confidence going into Friday night's season opener against Sydney. First half goals from Nik Mrdja and Adam Kwasnik were added to by Sasho Petrovski, Damien Brown, and Mrdja again in the second stanza, as the Mariners saw off a stubborn challenge from a New Caledonian side that will begin their quest for a 2010 FIFA World Cup berth in eight days time. Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna used all but four of his 22-man squad throughout the course of the match, with only injured defender Paul O’Grady and absent youth internationals Bradley Porter, Andrew Redmayne and Danny Vukovic failing to make an appearance at this uniquely international event. This was an assured, comfortable and controlled performance from the yellow and navy – one that augurs well for their third Hyundai A-League campaign. Match Details Central Coast Mariners 1. Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Last Pre Season game for Sydney Penrith Nepean United 2 - 1 Sydney FC Marquee man Juninho has made his long-awaited Sydney FC debut, playing the first 45 minutes against Penrith Nepean United at CUA Stadium. Sydney FC coach Branko Culina chose to start Juninho versus the New South Wales Premier League side and the 2002 FIFA World Cup-winning midfielder featured in a 4-2-3-1 formation, lining up directly behind lone striker Alex Brosque with Steve Corica and Adam Biddle on his left and right respectively. Juninho laid on a couple of decent chances for his new teammates before Sydney FC took the lead in the 27th minute, Qantas Socceroos star Mark Milligan heading home the ball from Ufuk Talay's free kick. Penrith Nepean United scored a scrappy equaliser just before the break and then, after Culina substituted almost all his starters for the second period, the home side forged ahead and held on to win 2-1 in front of approximately 5000 fans. Sydney FC's starting line-up: Clint Bolton, Iain Fyfe, Mark Rudan, Tony Popovic, Steve Corica, Alex Brosque, Terry McFlynn, Mark Milligan, Adam Biddle, Juninho, Ufuk Talay.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Got to have a lot of money on Central Coast, maybe with the half ball to be safe, Sydney are going to struggle this year, they have lost some of their real talent from last season and look way to skinny this year. Carney will be a huge loss and I would suggest this will have an impact on Corica who played his best football with Carney coming from behind. Juninho will take a while to get used to the long ball being rained down on him and with no width to speak of they will be raining. The real question for Sydney is who is going to play the creative role in central midfield to feed the ball to Juninho's feet? The Mariners on the other hand look very dangerous this season, they have picked up the extra players that they needed in attack, an established defense with Vidmar in the center and a work ethic that should see them have a great season. Mariners with the half ball at this stage for me, will wait until closer to kick off to put the money down.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Preview: Sydney FC v Central Coast Mariners Date: Friday August 24 Kick-off (local time): 8.00pm Venue: Sydney Football Stadium TV coverage: Live on Fox Sports 2 (SKY Sports 3 in NZ) Radio coverage: Coast FM 96.3FM (Central Coast) Head-to-head Seven league meetings: Sydney - 3 wins, Central Coast - 2 wins, 2 draws Previous meeting Sydney 0 Central Coast 3 (Canberra Stadium, Pre-Season Cup round three, July 2007) Past five results Sydney: Draw - Loss - Loss - Loss - Win Central Coast: Win - Draw - Win - Loss - Loss Analysis The sides which ended the 2005/06 campaign kick off Hyundai A-League Version Three although you get the feeling Sydney FC coach Branko Culina would have loved the season's start to have been delayed for a couple more weeks. The inaugural champion, and some pundits pick as the club most likely to chase down Melbourne Victory, hasn't enjoyed pre-season one bit with last Friday's 2-1 defeat to local side Penrith Nepean United completing a mixed bag of results. That reverse made it four losses in five weeks for Culina's desperately undermanned side, although at least marquee signing Juninho got 45 minutes under his belt for his new club while Steve Corica came through unscathed after a back problem. Teenager midfielder Adam Biddle might get the nod to partner Juninho and Steve Corica in Culina's midfield three with Robbie Middleby (ankle) and Adam Casey (hamstring) on the treatment table and Ruben Zadkovich playing two-thirds of the Qantas Olyroos qualifying draw with Iraq on Thursday morning (AEST). Culina will be hoping Mark Milligan can shake off the effects of a mystery virus which has bedridden him since last Friday although new signing Patrick is still awaiting international clearance. Sasho Petrovski, who made 43 Hyundai A-League appearances for Sydney over two seasons and scored a club record 14 goals, is expected to start upfront for the Mariners alongside Nik Mrdja. Petrovski and Mrdja's growing friendship on and off the field could be the key to the Central Coast's thrust for the playoffs this term. Last Friday, in the club's morale-boosting 5-0 win over Oceanic challengers New Caledonia, Mrdja scored twice and Petrovski once with Mrdja's brace taking his tally to six goals in 11 pre-season and trial games. Indeed, in stark contrast to Sydney, coach Lawrie McKinna couldn't have hoped for much more from the Mariners pre-season. Injuries, the club's bugbear last term, are few and far between with only central defender Paul O'Grady ruled out of contention for the trip to Sydney Football Stadium. Greg Owens played the entire second-half against New Caledonia while ex-Socceroo Tony Vidmar continued his recovery from recent injury and illness concerns with an assured 45 minutes in central defence. Midfield ace Mile Jedinak was forced from the field in the first-half due to a slight knee concern, with John Hutchinson introduced as a precautionary measure, but he does make the short trip as one of McKinna's 20-man squad.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) CURRENT ODDS Sydney $2-05 Draw $3-30 CC Mariners $3-40 (Centrebet) Sydney $2-10 Draw $3-30 CC Mariners $3-30 (Sportingbet) Mariners are great value for mine here at $3-40. This is a flip of the coin job and the Mariners have the better pre season form, including a 3 goal win over Sydney. Vidmar down back with Gumbrecht, Owens and Kwasnik spells trouble for Sydney. The home side is a bit short for my liking, although it will be great to see the Brazilian Juninho's first game.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Milligan in doubt for Sydney FC Mark Milligan remains in doubt for Sydney FC's season opener against the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night, after being confined to his bed with a mystery virus since Friday. Sydney FC coach Branko Culina confirmed on Wednesday his star midfielder was 'pretty sick' but refused to rule the Olyroos skipper out of Friday night's clash. "We'll leave it as long as we can but it is a bit of a concern because he hasn't done anything since last Friday," Culina said. At least six Sydney FC players look likely to miss the opening round with Jacob Timpano, Adam Casey and Robbie Middleby all battling injuries, while new arrival Patrick Da Silva is still awaiting official clearance and is unlikely to start.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Mariners at almost full strength for blockbuster derby Central Coast Mariners Football Manager Lawrie McKinna has been presented with a number of welcome selection headaches ahead of the Mariners’ opening match of the new Hyundai A-League season at the Sydney Football Stadium tomorrow night. McKinna has selected a preliminary squad of 20 players for tomorrow’s fixture, which is not only the Mariners’ first match of their new campaign, but also the very first match of the Hyundai A-League 2007/08 season. Injured defender Paul O’Grady and new recruit Ian McAndrew, who is still short of fitness having only recently joined his hometown club, are the only confirmed absentees from one of the most highly anticipated derbies ever between the two inaugural Hyundai A-League Grand Finalists. Such dilemmas in squad selection have been virtually non-existent for McKinna over the past two seasons and ahead of what promises to be a blockbuster in every sense, there is little doubting that the Mariners are as strong as they have ever been. "We’ve got everybody fit apart from Paul O’Grady, and we’ve never had a squad like that to pick from," said McKinna. "Three of the boys, Greg Owens, Andrew Clark and Tony Vidmar are probably just a little bit underdone for match fitness, because they’ve had their little injuries that they’re coming back from – they’re fit and available but probably just not sharp enough. "It’s a good problem to have, we’ve never really had this problem in two years. "Our pre-season was good, it was disappointing against Perth and Queensland, but we came back against New Caledonia and the boys have freshened up last week and this week and will be raring to go on Friday night – we’ll do the Coast proud." Friday’s match will be the Mariners’ eleventh against Sydney FC in all competitions. Thus far, the Mariners have recorded three wins, two draws and five losses – the greatest amount of defeats they have recorded against any Hyundai A-League opposition in their short history. Mariners midfielder Andre Gumprecht is one to have benefited from previous matches against Sydney FC, having scored half of his four Central Coast goals in matches against the Mariners’ southern rivals. Gumprecht is one of twelve starters from the inaugural Hyundai A-League Grand Final that is eligible to play for their respective club this Friday – 537 days since that historic encounter at the Sydney Football Stadium. Aside from Gumprecht, current Mariners squad members Damien Brown, Andrew Clark, Dean Heffernan, Tom Pondeljak, Danny Vukovic and Alex Wilkinson were members of the Central Coast’s starting eleven on 5 March, 2006, while for Sydney FC, Clint Bolton, Steve Corica, Terry McFlynn, Mark Rudan and Jacob Timpano are survivors.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) I like Sydney FC here. They have made some excellent signings during the off season that should see them again in the running to make the finals and challenge for the Grand Final. Juninho is pure class and will add a new dimension to the Sydney attack, while signings such as Patrick Da Silva, new captain Tony Popovic and Adam Casey from New Zealand will ensure they have a very rounded out squad with plenty of depth. Central Coast also have a good line up and the additions of Sasho Petrovski and Greg Owens really gives them a dangerous attack now, an area which they struggled in last season. Dean Heffernan returns to the club also and his defence is superb, but his ability to run up and score goals is another of his great assets. I like the Central Coast side, but i think Sydney will be too strong in front of a large home crowd. Also, i expect this game to have plenty of goals, so the over 2.5 goals is a good option purely cause of the amazing value. Pick Sydney WIN at $2.10 - Centrebet Match Over 2.5 Goals at $1.97 - Centrebet

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Patrick cleared to play tonight for Sydney FC Sydney FC may have two Brazilians lining up against Central Coast Mariners in the season opener at the Sydney Football Stadium Friday night after Brazilian Patrick Da Silva received his international clearance. With Juninho a confirmed starter, Patrick may take his place in the squad after his paperwork was processed in time despite doubts earlier in the week as to whether he would be made available in time. Patrick arrived only last weekend and has been training with the club throughout the week. Socceroos star Mark Milligan, who has been battling an illness, was also expected to start. Reports have also suggested former Wigan Athletic keeper John Filan has agreed a short term deal to provide injury cover for Clint Bolton with Ivan Necevski out for at least a month - although Matthew Nash has been named as reserve keeper in Sydney's squad for the Mariners game.

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) I also like Sydney tonight. I think they'll have a good season, decent signings. You'll not see them odds against at home many times this season. Small stakes for early season though

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) Sydney FC Vs Central Coast Mariners Sydney Interesting game to start season 3 of the A League. Sydney have not been travelling that well pre season and last season under Terry Butcher they under achieved big time. Mark Milligan has had his troubles before the season has even started and the transfer of David Carney to Sheffield United in the English Championship have thrown the home side's title ambitions into chaos. Sydney have recruited a class player in Juninho, and picked up the exciting Patrick De Silva, but I feel this is going to be a tough season for the Sydney team. They look better in defence with former Socceroo Tony Popovic a massive gain after the departure of Alvin Ceccoli to Japan and Nikolai Topor-Stanley to Perth. Carney's absence leaves a big hole in attack and it is probably expecting too much of Sydney for it to win the title this year but it will be expecting nothing less. Sydney's pre season form has been fairly ordinary and it may take time for the team to gel together efficiently. Central Coast Mariners The Mariners on the other hand have recruited solidly and their pre season form has been excellent. Last season the Mariners didn't score a goal in the first 5 rounds, but in their 5 pre season games they have already scored 10. Kwasnik, Gumbrecht and Petrovski scoring multiple goals. Signings Greg Owens and Sasho Petrovski suggest this could be a big year for the Mariners after missing the finals last season. The return of Dean Heffernan is a key addition to the defence, while much will be expected from newly fit pair John Hutchinson and Nik Mrdja, and a recharged Adam Kwasnik, who was off the boil in 2006. CCM has an outstanding keeper in Danny Vukovic and a solid defence headed by Vidmar. If they can find the net this season on a regular basis then the Mariners are in for a great year I believe. Thoughts This game could really go either way but I feel the Mariners have better pre season form and they also have a more settled side, and considering this is more or less a coin flip, the Mariners are showing odds of $3-40 and scream value to me. Sydney failed to score in three of five pre season games, whereas the Mariners scored in every game, that suggests to me that Central Coast are worthy of a bet at $3-40. There is also a big chance this could be a draw, so i plan to take a Draw Saver bet at $3-30. I agree with Ads too that there could be a few goals scored, and the Over 2.5 is great odds. Central Coast Mariners to WIN @ $3-40 (Centrebet) Draw Saver @ $3-30 if any doubts (Centrebet) Over 2.5 Goals @ $2-00 (Sportingbet)

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) It is 7:30pm down under and it is only 30 minutes until kick off for the Sydney/Mariners clash. Currently it is pouring rain at the ground and it is going to be a wet and soggy start for these two teams, so anything could happen under those conditions. Kick off in 30 minutes :cheers

Re: A-League Round 1 - Sydney vs Central Coast (Fri 24th Aug) HT: Sydney 0 - 1 Central Coast Mariners 6m Petrovski (CCM) Yellow Cards Heffernan (CCM) Jedinak (CCM) Talay (SC) Top quality first half and dominated by Central Coast who attacked from the outset. Petrovski could have had a second goal when he missed a header on 25m while Mrdja had a shot that hit the post for Central Coast. Sydney started to play better in the last 10 minutes before half time and a bit of Juninho brilliance should have resulted in a goal but he elected to try and go round the keeper and missed the opportunity. Heffernan and Boogard look strong down back for the Mariners while Gumbrecht is playing very well in midfield, and Petrovski and Mrdja are combining well up front with Kwasnik providing plenty of support out left. For Sydney Juninho has shown some signs of his brilliance and Popovich and Rudan have been solid down back. Youngester Diddle has been lively but his finishing has let him down. Great game in driving rain and the skills are fairly good considering the conditions.
