There is no cash alternative. In this instance, Virgin Poker will usually pick the runner-up as the replacement, subject to their total discretion. If it's any consolation I went out to a guy who re-raised my 3 x BB raise pre-flop with 72o (and no he wasn't a pler) :\ I was going along quite well at the time well above average and down to less the 80 runners. I'm not sure why people are so desperate to play in this event anyway especially if you live far away, you may as well save your buy in + travel + accommodation and buy into a decent event in your local casino, if you want to get away from online donks. Fortunately its local for me, so not too much hardship and a $23 weekly final will not see me in the poor house. I can understand Joe not allowing direct buy in as it will just be over subscribed and then we will just have the click fest that is APAT.
