Scoop6 – Saturday October 10th

Last week the Tote Scoop6 was won and the lucky winner will be attempting to win the Bonus of £342,177 by selecting the winner of this week’s feature race the Betfred Cesarewitch. The Win fund should reach 100,000 with all six races on Channel 4 from Newmarket and York.

Leg 1: 1.45 York

We kick off with a tricky Class 2 handicap at York and we have seven last-time out winners in the field. The favourite will be Arthenus from the in form James Fanshawe yard, he won at Ascot last time and is improving with every run. The Fahey team took this last year and have two runners this time round of which Spring Offensive looks the main hope. I like the Balding runner Arabian Illusion who won well in he soft ground last time and will find conditions to suit for his handicap debut.

Selection: Arabian Illusion 9/2 William Hill (Spring Offensive)

Leg 2: 2.00 Newmarket

A 7f Fillies Nursery where twelve of the fifteen runners have tasted victory already this season. Top weight is Dawaa from the Mark Johnston yard; she has won two nurseries already so the handicapper should have her measure. The Stoute runner Barleysugar is on the upgrade but has only raced on the AW so far so that’s a worry and Symposium is preferred. She also won on AW last time but had ran well on her debut at Newbury in similar conditions. She has an Irish 1000 Guineas entry so is obviously well regarded and would need to win this if that was a serious target.

Selection: Symposium 6/1 Bet365 (Dawaa)

Leg 3: 2.35 Newmarket

A Group 3 contest here and the Charlie Hill’s runner Ibn Malik at the head of the market on the strength of finishing second in two Group 2 events at Goodwood and Doncaster. This is a step up in trip but shouldn’t be a problem. The O’Brien raider Beacon Rock looks a stayer and needs to improve on what we have seen so far while the same can be said for Jim Bolger’s runner Clear Cut. Gifted Master won for this column last week and see no reason to abandon him here over an extra furlong, he was very impressive and will gain bid to make all.

Selection: Gifted Master 4/1 Paddy Power (Ibn Malik)

Leg 4: 2.50 York

Only 8 runners line up for the Listed Rockingham Stakes but it’s quite an open looking contest all the same. Trainer David Evans does well with his youngsters and Gracious John looked very useful when bolting up in a Nursery at Haydock in soft ground. That looked a well-executed plan and deserves a crack at this level now. Dhahmaan won well the last time we saw him and could be anything while it would be foolish to ignore any of the Mark Johnston 2yo’s this season and Delizia was a good 3rd to Log Out Island at Redcar last week and rates as the danger.

Selection: Gracious John 3/1 William Hill (Delizia)

Leg 5: 3.25 York

The Coral Sprint Trophy over 6f and 20 runners line up for a very competitive renewal. Lets start at the top with Poyle Vinnie, he was a cracking second in the Ayr Gold Cup last time and will love these conditions. Top weights have a good record in this handicap so don’t let that put you off. Favourite George Bowen was just beaten by stable companion Tatlisu in the Silver Cup last time but is better off now at the weights with Jack Garrity claiming as well he should go close. Of the others Robot Boy and Nameitwhatyoulike could go well at bigger odds from the widest draws.

Selection: George Bowen 7/1 Bet365 (Poyle Vinnie)

Leg 6: 3.50 Newmarket: Betfred Cesarewitch

The big betting race of the day and a massive field of 34 runners to sort out. Stamina will be the key here over this 2m2f trip on softish ground and the Irish raider Quick Jack will be popular with Ryan Moore booked to ride. He won the Galway Hurdle and was 3rd in this last year so is pretty solid all round. The favourite is Low Key from the David Pipe yard. He won the trial race here in good style and wont mind the ground, he up 8lbs but looks a progressive sort. The top weight Oriental Fox is decent value in my opinion, he has won here before and finished 6th in this race two years ago. Since then he has put up some good performances in Group company and is drawn on the far side, which looks promising.

Selection: Oriental Fox 20/1 BetVictor (Quick Jack)

Not often you get a Tony Martin trained horse at 33s in a big staying handicap but there's one at a huge price tomorrow. Cassells Rock was given the dodgiest ride I've seen all season in the Cesarewitch trial at Newmarket when Billy Lee barely asked any effort off the him at all despite travelling as good as anything. If you go back to his penultimate start on the flat he was second in a hot renewal of the staying handicap at Leopardstown on Irish Champions Weekend with the winner now rated 102, the third 109 and the 4th a subsequent winner of the Ladbroke Handicap at Ascot. He races off 1lb lower here which makes him a danger even from the widest draw.

The other one I like is Prescott's Moscato. He's your typical Prescott horse that was tried over far too short distances before shooting up the ratings once upped to 2 miles. He looks like he's been laid out for this after returning from a long break over the summer in the trial last month. He was beaten just over 7L that day but carrying the top weight after a long lay off was never going to be easy and I reckon that will put him spot on for this. Morris picks him over the 3 other Prescott runners including William of Orange who was good enough to be tried at Group 2 level.
